than four years of college.

The mother who adopted a stranger's sorrows
never lacked for family.

Choosing character over credentials
requires courage that some people lack.

This is the cost that our achievement-obsessed world

Performative character asks:
"What will make me look good?"

I've seen executives with impressive credentials

And watched people with modest backgrounds
build empires because they were trustworthy.

The billionaire who's lived in the same house for 30 years.
The leader who promotes the person who challenged them.

They understood something
our credential-focused world forgets:

Credentials depreciate.
Character compounds.

Your followers can disappear overnight.
Your degree may lose relevance.
Your title changes with your job.

follows you everywhere.

Here's how to spot authentic character:

1. Watch how a person treats people
who can't help them advance.

2. Listen to how they talk
about people who aren't present.

This question is like my North Star:

"If I choose character over credentials,
how does this decision change?"

Suddenly, every choice becomes clearer.

We carry two resumes through life:

"No one comes off mute when the dashboard is green."
My coaching client said this in passing.
I can't stop thinking about it.

Why do we only pounce on problems?

Your team dynamics reveal this pattern instantly. 

Crisis generates energy. 
Success generates silence.

We've built entire leadership cultures around firefighting. 

Red alerts spark collaboration. 
Emergency meetings fill up fast. 
All hands on deck when things break.

But when things work? 
When targets are hit and momentum builds?

Crickets.

So what's the alternative?
I'm not talking about irrational exuberance.

Keep it authentic.

We crave intentional recognition of what's working so we can replicate it.

Small shifts chan change the energy in the room.

Instead of rushing past good news to find the next problem, pause.
"Let's understand what made this week different."

Instead of treating success as expected, treat it as data. 
"What assumptions should we revisit?"

People lean in when you make success as interesting as failure.

Your team mirrors your energy.  

If fixing becomes more engaging than building, that becomes your default mode.

But the teams that scale are the ones who study their wins with the same rigor they apply to their losses.

No one comes off mute when the dashboard is green.
Unless you teach them that success deserves the same attention as struggle.

Raise the Energy of the Room

It can be as common as "um" or "like"

And it's quietly holding you back.

For years, I was certain this was a polite habit.

Until a leader pulled me aside after a meeting

"You've earned your seat in there.
Stop apologizing.
It's hurting your influence."

I was a little shocked.

It had been a habit for so long that I didn't even realize how often I led with an unnecessary apology.

Apologies are for mistakes.
Not as a prelude to a question.

I worked on small shifts:

Instead of "Sorry to disagree"
→ "I see it differently"

Instead of "Sorry to ask"  
→ "I'd love your help with this"

Instead of "Sorry for the confusion"
→ "Let me clarify"

Fast forward to being a mom.
My daughter came home from practice:

"It was great, but there's a new rule.
There's now an 'I'm sorry' tax.
Paid in push-ups."

Confidence builds trust faster than apologies.
Being clear is kind.

Every time you apologize for existing in a space, you signal that you don't belong there.

Thankful for coaches who care enough to help us see what we might be missing.

Bonus: coach yourself.

How do you turn around a program?

Indiana had zero five-star recruits.

A lot is written about standards.
We can all learn from Coach Curt Cignetti:
