Panic is contagious.

My mentor Mau was one of the greatest 
master navigators in the world.

In the middle of a violent storm, 
when no one onboard expected to survive, 
Mau held steady.

He didn't shout.
He didn't panic. He read the weather conditions, 
trusted his training, and brought everyone home.

The crew didn't survive because of his title.
They survived because of his calm.

3 things Mau's calm taught me about real leadership:

1. Calm is a signal, not a personality trait. 
It tells others: we're not sinking. It's a choice you make 
in the middle of the storm, not after it passes.

In a meeting where panic is rising, 
your steady voice becomes the anchor.

2. Steadiness is the real authority.

We rarely know the impact we make.
A phone call. A text message.

Years ago, I woke with an overwhelming urge 
to call a friend in California.

The phone rang. No answer.

I tried again. Nothing.

A third time. Still nothing.

A week later, I learned she'd tried to take her life 
that morning.

The housekeeper went upstairs because the phone 
wouldn't stop ringing.

That instinct to keep calling saved her.

That experience changed how I live:

1. Trust the nudge to reach out.
Don't wait for the right words. Just show up.

2. Listen with your whole self.
People are hurting in ways we can't see. 
Presence matters more than advice.

3. Small acts carry enormous weight.
A text. A call. A moment of attention. A text might be 
the only proof someone gets that they matter.

4. Your influence is already at work, whether you see 
it or not. The greatest compliment isn't praise. 
It's knowing you made a difference in someone's life.

You don't need a grand gesture.

You just need to be present.

Years ago, I walked into a hotel executive's office 
hoping for sponsorship for a local pageant.

My family was struggling. 
I was putting myself through college.

He dismissed me almost immediately.

Eight months later, 
I was crowned Miss Hawai'i.

Years after that, he found me.
"I saw a poorly dressed young woman," he said. 
"I didn't think you had a chance. 
I've followed your career since. I'm sorry."

I didn't remember him. 
But I remembered how he made me feel.

Being dismissed taught me more about humility 
than any success ever has.

None of us sit high enough to look down on anyone.

Humility isn't weakness. It's precision. 
It keeps your vision wide 
when success wants to narrow it.

The clearest people are the ones still looking up.

This is what happens when you learn something new. 

It’s 6:25 am. I am sitting in my green chair.

I get my phone out of my pocket and put it in front of my face.  It tells me that it can't recognize my face, so I type in my pass code. The home screen is full of apps, and I take a second to find the app I want to open. 

It’s the Kindle app.  It opens to page 263 of 481. I am about 57% done. 

The book I am reading is called Very Good Copy, by Eddy Shleyner. It’s about copywriting. Copywriting is the discipline of writing ads, advertisements, and website content to sell products. 

The chapter I am about to read is called Writing Immersive Stories.  It begins with a story about a hospital visit. Eddie talks about his experience just before and right after surgery. He then breaks down a technique for writing stories called “realism.” 

He offers two more examples. I read them. I can’t stop. The technique is so effective that my mind won’t let me put my phone down. 

I finish the chapter, and I feel empowered. Inspired.  Excited.  I learned something new today.

Learning something will make you feel that way, excited, empowered. But that is not the end of it. When you apply what you learn and get results, the feelings of success and accomplishment can often overwhelm you and send you jumping up and down like a little kid. 

The key is to apply the learning.  And over the years, that’s what I’ve done. 

When I learned communication and writing, I:

5️⃣ What are your salary expectations? 
Show that you’ve done your homework. Give a range. 

The hiring manager wants to know:

• How do you value this role?
• Are you within their budget?
• Do you fall within the market rate?

6️⃣ Tell me about a gap in your resume.
Be honest. Be brief. Talk about skills you’ve gained in the gap.

The hiring manager wants to know:

• How you used your time?
• Do you have any visible red flags?
• What was the reason for the gap?

7️⃣ Tell me about a time you’ve failed.
Be honest. Show that you know how to recover. 

The hiring manager wants to know:

• Do you know when you’ve failed?
• How well you recover from failure?
• Did you learn lessons for the future?

90% of strategic plans fail because they lack a clear structure and follow-through. 

Strategic planning is a difficult task because it requires:

A few years back, I worked with a Fortune 500 client to develop a multi-year system improvement strategy.

After reviewing their previous attempts, I realized their strategy process lacked structure. This made it difficult to focus on the right issues and create a coherent plan. 

1️⃣ I proposed we start with the foundation: 

• Mission
• Values

We needed to understand where this business unit was going. 

2️⃣ In the second phase, we assessed the current environment.  

We looked at: 

• The current market
• Opportunities and threats
• Weaknesses and strengths

This helped us understand what we had to work with. 

3️⃣ In the third phase, we began our strategic planning process.  

We defined:

• The vision
• Strategic goals
• Key objectives

We laid out the general direction we wanted the system improvement to take.

4️⃣ Our fourth phase was about tactical planning, outlining: 

• The guiding policy
• Key actions to take
• Accountable executives

After three months of hard work, the plan was ready for execution. 

5️⃣ During this stage, the people responsible would be: 

• Monitoring results
• Adjusting the plans
• Gather feedback and improve 

This was the strategic blueprint we set up for our client’s $100M system improvement strategy.
