When I left my last Head of Growth role, a lot of people told me not to.

I remember hearing, soooo many times,
“Are you sure?”
“You’ve got so much momentum.”
“Why walk away now?”

From the outside, it looked like I was jumping from a nice 6-figure salary without a safety net.

What they didn’t see was that I’d been building toward it for years.

I’d built and scaled growth 4x in-house.
I'd coached founders on Google's accelerator.
I’d mentored 100+ companies through Growth Mentor.
I worked with the incredible Matt Lerner and Nopadon Wongpakdee building out SYSTM.

I’d spent over a decade in startups before Aperture existed.

I had worked really fucking hard.

Not loudly. Just consistently.

So when I finally left, it didn’t feel reckless.

It felt… finished. It felt like the natural next step.

Aperture wasn’t a leap into the unknown. It was formalising something I’d already proven to myself.

Jillian Lee Stout and Terra LaRock from Mindful Mamas were my first clients through Aperture. They trusted me before there was a team, before there was polish, before there was anything that looked like “an agency.” 

And you know what, we still work together in some ways, over 3 years later.

From the outside, it looked like risk. From the inside, it felt inevitable.

And here’s the part I don’t talk about much:

The real reason I left wasn’t courage.
It was misalignment.

That quiet, persistent feeling that something wasn’t quite right anymore.

If you’re building a consumer app, this room will matter.

A few years ago, I joined a company to run growth.
I inherited a handful of agencies.
One was an ads agency.

And well...

When I looked at the Meta account, I was genuinely shocked.

They were optimising for link clicks.

For a mobile app.

When I asked why, they told me there was no other option.
Because it was an app.

No downstream event tracking.
No in-app event optimisation.
No attribution set up.
No install campaigns.

🤡 Just link clicks 🤡

I sat down with the agency and walked them through it.

How to set up an MMP.
App install campaigns.
Why post-install signals matter.
How to optimise for value instead of vanity metrics.

They nodded. They rebuilt it.

And every single build had mistakes.

Broken tracking.
Incorrect optimisation events.
Campaign structures that made no sense.

I was spending more time QA’ing their work than it would have taken to build it properly myself.

So I told one of the founders I wanted to cut the agency.

I said I could probably run this in half a day a week instead.

He told me it was his friend’s agency.

And that I wasn’t a performance specialist, so I wouldn’t be able to do it.

Soooo, for context: 

At that point, I’d been running paid acquisition for nearly a decade.
I’d scaled multiple products.
I’d won advertising awards.

But okay.

I left him to it.

I didn’t argue, over-explain, or try to convince him. 

Why bother?

I didn’t build a multi-million dollar performance agency to prove him wrong.

I built it because I already knew he was.
