Lately I haven’t shared much about the work I do with international clients.

Mostly because I’ve been neck deep in work.

Thought I’d share this quick win.

Sometime last week I crossed $5,000 in earnings on Upwork.

Grateful for good clients and steady progress.

Last week shook me real hard.

A client I’d worked with for almost a year called… to cancel.

At first, I couldn’t process it. 

Then she explained: the ongoing unrest in the Middle East had affected her business, and her income.

I felt a mix of shock, sadness, and… embarrassment.

Why? Because I had gotten too comfortable.
So comfortable that I stopped hunting for new clients.
So comfortable that I assumed the contract would continue.
So comfortable that I didn’t share my work publicly to attract opportunities.

She wasn’t my only client, but she was one of the best-paying ones, and naturally, I devoted most of my energy to her.

After the call, I just sat there, running the numbers in my head and wondering how I let myself get here.

Well, lesson learned the hard way:

Never rely on just one client, no matter how fat their budget is.

Things can change in an instant.

So here's a question for you, dear remote worker:

Have you ever lost a major client out of nowhere, and what did you do the very next day?

One of the reasons I love working with foreign clients is because of their payment structure.


You see, in Nigeria, most businesses pay salaries at the end of the month.

It’s a fixed amount, regardless of how much effort or time you put in.

But in places like the US and other developed countries, the average business owner often pays their staff per hour.

Now, imagine being paid for every single hour you work.

This is why freelancing platforms like Upwork are such a goldmine.

When you land hourly jobs there, it gets exciting because, at the end of the week, your earnings in $$$ could easily surpass what the average Nigerian business would pay monthly.

This brings me to one of the reasons I admire European football players.

These guys are like freelancers too, but on an elite level.

They earn thousands per hour for doing what they love.

For example, Cristiano Ronaldo earns a jaw-dropping €23,150 per hour at Al Nassr.

Marcus Rashford as at the time he played for Manchester United, took home £1,934 per hour

Bruno Fernandes, who is arguably Europe’s best attacking midfielder takes home roughly £1,800 per hour

You see why I prefer working with foreign clients who pay hourly over fixed projects?

Hourly pay makes you value your time more.

It makes you more productive because you see every second adding to your income.

And the best part? Just like football players, you can achieve much more in a short time when you focus on delivering value.

So whether you’re freelancing, consulting, or running your own business, always aim to work smart and make the hours count.

Your time is your most valuable resource. Don’t sell it cheap

I believe this made much sense to someone?

One of the reasons I genuinely respect President Obama is how intentional he is about staying relevant.

Case in point

A few days ago at an NBA game inside the Intuit Dome, a loose ball flew towards the courtside seats and Obama casually caught it. 

It was such a simple moment, but within hours the video was everywhere. 

Millions of views. 
National TV replaying it.
Reposts across platforms. 

Most people would just enjoy the virality and move on.

Obama did not.

He went on Instagram and captioned the clip, “everyone is welcome at home court when we open the Obama Presidential Centre in June.”

That is what caught my attention.

He connected a random cultural moment to a larger mission. He redirected attention to what he is building.

This is a former President.

His legacy is already secured. 

He does not need publicity. 

Yet he still shows up in spaces that shape culture and conversation; NBA games, Influential rooms, public events,etc

That is marketing and branding strategy if you ask me.

He understands that attention is a resource, and when it comes, you do not waste it. You attach it to something bigger.

It is the same reason Funke Akindele will aggressively promote her movie when it is in cinemas. 

She has the fame. 

She has the audience. 

But she still campaigns for visibility because she understands that relevance must be sustained.

Now bring it back to you.

If a former President is still intentional about how he positions what he is building, how much more you?

You with the small business.
You offering services online.
You building quietly and hoping your work will speak for itself.

Good work does not automatically travel.

Visibility makes it travel.

Branding is not noise, rather, it is deliberately connecting moments to your mission.

So the next time attention comes your way, do not just enjoy it. Redirect it!

Attach it to what you are building.

That is how you play the long game
