Last week I felt a bit low

I’m sure you know that feeling 

Working hard and not seeming to get the traction you hoped for

(this is the life of an entrepreneur I know!)

I embarked on this mega survey for The Rise Report

If I’m totally honest I thought getting 2k respondents would be super easy

And it wasn’t 
It’s been hard 

Every day whatsapping Debbie and getting the updated numbers

Was in the valley of despair for a few days
As the numbers grew 
But in my eyes too slowly!

And now we are at the point that we’re nearly done and that feels great  🙌🙌

Looking back I can feel that worry of the task being too big

The stress of the responsibilities 

I imagine it’s akin to a fundraise
Or any important campaign

Trying to gather everyone together to get  involved in your mission when it’s a new thing! 

To get the early adopters to believe in what you’re trying to do!

And my biggest learnings

1/ there is always a valley of despair 
That’s where most people give up

2/ Consistency is everything 
You have to show up time and time again

3/ relationships is what it’s all about
Always has been always will be 

The people that have been :

> checking in on how it’s going 
> promoting the survey
> sharing the survey
> partnering on the survey
> Getting people to do the survey

They’re the ones making it happen!!

A love letter to the woman I once was
.
If I could sit down with 25-year-old me, I’d tell her 3 things:

1/ Be kind to yourself
You can be ambitious and gentle - both are allowed.

2/ Sometimes you have to do hard things
Growth isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it.

3/ Wellbeing is everything
You can’t pour from an empty cup - take care of your energy first.


I wrote this as a love letter to my younger self 
But also to anyone still figuring it out 💜

You don’t need all the answers yet.
Just curiosity, courage, and a little self-compassion.

Save this for the days you forget how far you’ve come.

3 pieces of advice to 25 year old Emmie

Women owned startups are a better bet

Startups Founded or Cofounded by Women Garner Less in Investments but Generate More Revenue, research shows.

This data is quite old (over 7 years) 
But it’s often quoted because less face it there is SO little up to date resesarch on women-led businesses

(This is why we’ve embarked on a mega survey of 2k female founders with The Rise Report of Female Entrepreneurship)

Anyway back to the findings 👇

According to their research, when women business owners pitch their ideas to investors for early-stage capital, they receive significantly less (a disparity that averages more than $1 million) than men. 

Yet businesses founded by women ultimately deliver higher revenue (more than twice as much per dollar invested)
than those founded by men, 

👉making women-owned companies better investments for financial backers. 

And yes I’m invested most of my disposable cash in women
Not just for this reason but also cos I want to see the funding levels become more equal

🎉 And I just had my first exit 🎉

What is missing in the UK right now is an up to date regular and robust report and that’s what we are trying to do.

Of course we can’t cover off everything on day 1 but slowly over time we will gather it all and get an independent yearly review on the state of female entrepreneurship

You know one of the hardest things?

Getting buy-in to an idea or project before it’s a thing!

You have to 
✅Sell the dream 
✅ Sell the big vision
✅ Sell the mission

This has been my life for the last 2 weeks.

No one wants to fill in another survey…
We all have survey fatigue

And here I am asking women to fill in ‘another survey’
(This will be the last time for sure!)

And many have said no
And I understand why
(That’s another post)


Of Course next year will be so much easier
With momentum
And trust and 
The Rise Report of Female Entrepreneurship will be a thing.

Next time it will be easier to get people to share their time and data and insights
Because they will see the impact.

An important lesson I learnt from the wondeful Seth Godin 👇

In business the hardest work is getting the first users onboard.
The early adopters 

Getting people to buy into something new and unknown is hard but 
Once you get the early adopters on board 
It all becomes so much easier.


I’m happy to say we are very close to having our first 2k early adopters for this report survey and it feels 
GREAT to say that.

Two words changed how I think about success.

(I used to believe talent was fixed) 
That you were either born with it, or you weren’t.

Then someone told me about the Growth Mindset
And everything changed.

This mindset doesn’t just shape how we grow
It shapes who we become as a leader, as an entrepreneur, as a person

The difference between “I can’t do this”
and “I can’t do this yet”
is EVERYTHING

People with a fixed mindset:
→ Avoid challenges
→ Fear failure
→ Quit when it gets hard

People with a growth mindset:
→ See struggle as data, not defeat
→ Embrace feedback
→ Persist until they improve

The thing is every 'expert' started somewhere
Every success comes after a dozen failures

On my journey to building Female Founders Rise I embrace this mindset daily.
And it's made a huge difference to my work and life 
When something doesn't go to plan
It's not failure it just data.

Seeing people really starting to use SuperScout is the best thing. 

We've been building with customer feedback for over a year, and now, when I get on a call with a potential customer, I ask them to describe the problems they're having with organising their locations. 

Without fail every call in the last few weeks, the problems I've heard are things we've been hearing for a year now, and we've built systems to solve. 

It's a wonderful feeling hearing someone describe a frustrating problem to them and being able to turn around and say "I can solve that for you!"

It's even better to see people actively using the technology you've built. September our users uploaded more than locations we've ever seen (just about), and it is definitely trending upwards!

Empowering filmmakers with radically better software (SuperScout); Dad, Founder, Mentor, Cat Dad

Well that was an experience... 

Yesterday my wife was supposed to be rehearsing (violin) pretty much all day from 10am to 6pm. My mother in law and me were on baby caring duty, but only my wife can feed our son. 

Of course to complicate things I had meetings throughout the day with supporters, existing clients, and potential customers. 

There wasn't a single meeting that went smoothly. Screaming baby got his voice heard on all meetings, and I spent a lot of time running around the place with both a baby and laptop in hands... (taking baby to mom or MIL)

At one point, I had to bend over to calm my son, forgetting I'd just placed the laptop on the couch behind me. Sorry Jordan Isip for that rather full moon view... I imagine not what you'd expected, when I asked to talk about geographic tech. 

I had to quickly cut off and reschedule my client meeting twice because my son was fighting sleep but still needed sleep and only I could convince him of that - fortunately he (the client) was very understanding, but still embarrassing.

And then, the moment I was starting this important customer call, I got told my baby needed entertaining and my wife couldn't do it. 

Normally that would mean out come the toys, but when I need to do a demo that's not possible. So he ended up sitting on the call for 15 minutes and "supervising" (aka interjecting)

There's never a dull moment in this life!

Even amongst all that, 
- I learned how I could restructure my deck
- I got enormously useful feedback about a recent feature on SuperScout
- and I gave a very comprehensive demo, and answered sooo many questions (which are my favourite demos honestly)

I'm constantly inventing around my son, but probably not for the reason you think. 

It's safe to say I love being a dad. I don't shut up about it on here... 
- Partly because I don't see enough working dad content on here. 
- Partly because I love sharing the ups and downs of my entrepreneurial journey, and being a dad has stretched those. 
- And partly because I'm a dad so I love shouting about my son, even if I cover every image and rarely mention his name... 

However, much as I love him, he is currently 9 months old (ish), and at no fault of his, when I am spending time with him, my mind tends to switch off a tiny bit. 

Which is actually brilliant because (as science has proven) boredom can often foster creativity. And it definitely does in my case. 

I of course still pay enough attention to him to make sure he's safe and entertained. 

But at the moment, he can be entertained by slapping an interesting feeling wall for 15 minutes, which needless to say, gets old for me after a few seconds. 

My favourite job in startup world is inventing solutions to the problems my customers are facing. And I talk to 5-10 customers a week, so I always have plenty of conversations knocking around in my head. 

And while my son is slapping a wall (or something else equally mundane), I'm constantly brainstorming ideas in my head. 

It's become a fascinating new way to work, while not behind the computer. The only tough thing is because I'm with my son, I actively avoid taking out a screen, so I struggle at remembering ALL the ideas I come up with. 

My writing is atrocious & slow, so if anyone has any non-screen ideas (ideally that I can use while holding a small but rather heavy human), I'm all ears. 

Other parents - do you experience something like this? Or am I just a horrible dad for saying I can get bored with the miracle of life in my arms?

Well that's a first! Today I have a meeting where my son was requested in the scheduling for his "constructive criticism" 

Last week I shared having a crazy day where my son was involved unintentionally in every single meeting... I was scared he was a massive distraction to people but apparently not. 

One of the meetings from that day has led to a follow-on where they are assessing SuperScout for their business and have a few questions. 

And as my son was on the call for 15 minutes last time, they have now asked that he join the call today. 

I love having him on calls, but it's not easy running a live demo of our product while also trying to balance an ever-stretching baby. 

So let's see how this goes.

Last year, I attended an event in December called FOCUS, to show off our new technology for people in locations in film/tv. It was the same event that a year prior, I came up with the idea. 

We had 1 client in the room! The wonderful Dadina Sagger who shouted about us from the rooftops! And through our talk and stand, we received a large amount of interest, BUT the technology was too early for many people. 

This year we've been diligently working with people who accepted its shortcomings and joined us anyway. 

I have most of them on whatsapp, and I've been using any chance I can to chat with them: gathering their feedback, having conversations about what could be improved & what they've always dreamed of having in a system like this. And I've been using these unlocked insights to adjust our roadmap. 

Our tech still has a long way to go, but it's come leaps and bounds from where it was last year. Massive kudos to Dharmil Trivedi for leading the team so well! And our consistency in talking, listening, understanding, and building has paid off. 

We'll have at least 9 key customers in the room (a small or big jump if you talk # or %), where they'll use a new feature from SuperScout to showcase their locations, but more importantly we won't be just some random name in the noise. 

I've called a bunch of potential customers to set up meetings and consistently they've said "I've heard good things about you! I'm very interested in a demo." 

FOCUS is in 1 month, and I can't wait! (and I'll try to take more photos this time - reusing this one has gotten old)

Well, no one else would play the Duolingo owl. The actor we hired especially (came highly recommended) pulled out citing worries of “legal action”. 

So guess who had to step in. 🙄

Has Loom been training on Trump speak? 

This is not something I say - it's never something I've said. But in the AI output of my loom video for Dharmil today it said "Thank you for your attention to this matter!" 

This is not something that needs to be said more. It's very strange. 

Before now the AI summaries of loom videos have been quite good but this one is just weird. A made up word / spelling mistake, a weird phrase at the end (before the screenshot below) and then the Trump-style ending. 

Anyone else experiencing this recently?
