Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry

Researching the spliceosome in the group of Prof. Dr. Reinhard Lührmann. The spliceosome is a complex molecular machine involved in determining which proteins are made by our cells. It trims and joins the RNA copy of a gene, so that it can serve as a blueprint for the manufacturing of the respective protein.

► My role in this field of research
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
For my PhD thesis, I developed an in vitro system to study the composition and the shape of this molecular machine at different stages of the splicing process in the fruit fly. By comparing the results of my experiments, to the research done with yeast and human cells, this work provided important insights into the evolutionary origin of these machines.

As a working student intern within the R&D Metabolic Diseases of Sanofi (Aventis Pharma Deutschland at the time), supported a post-doctoral researcher in the development of a new cell culture assay to screen properties of candidates for preclinical development.

Well… I wasn’t expecting that

I’ve delivered this story countless times

Rehearsed it, refined it, told it without wobbling

But yesterday....

I was rehearsing my Imposter to Empowered talk for International Women’s Day at Computacenter (Women in Tech) on Friday… and as I read one particular client story out loud, I got rather emotional

I’m really hoping that doesn’t happen live 😅

The story is about a leader who went from being bullied, doubting her worth, to  changing children’s lives through the way she now leads

I’ve shared it before, but today it landed differently

Maybe it’s because yesterday I had a call from someone who told me he’d watched one of my talks last year and “sobbed the whole way through”.

That had quite an impact on me...it reminded me of something very important

When the graft feels heavy, proposals don’t land, inboxes go quiet.....

And you question whether any of it is making a difference…

It’s easy to forget 👇 

What we do matters....not to everyone.... It’s not supposed to

But to someone....

It can be the thing they really needed in the way we provide it


This Friday, I’ll be talking about moving from imposter to empowered....minus the tears!!

Imposter syndrome in midlife

We’re told confidence comes with experience

But what I see, over and over again, is that for many leaders, it actually gets quieter… and heavier

By your 40s and 50s.....

You have more responsibility and are more visible

There’s a lot more at stake 😳

And for many, we're in the sandwich generation .....
supporting children on one side, ageing parents on the other…
while trying to remember where the heck you left your keys 😅

The mental load isn’t light ....oh, and add a slice of menopause pie to the mix ...

....because fluctuating hormones really do wonders for confidence and sleep 🙃

Now, suddenly, the doubt feels less like “Can I do this?”

And more like....

“Why am I still struggling with this at my age?”

The fear isn’t new ....
The pressure to have outgrown it by now is

It doesn’t look dramatic, and it's not always obvious to the untrained eye....

It looks like overworking, over-preparing, staying silent when you could speak & carrying pressure alone because you think you should be beyond it by now.

The truth is, experience doesn’t automatically create confidence 

Here's what does:

🔆 Self-awareness 
🔆 Emotional control
🔆 Mindset management

If you’re in your second act and quietly questioning yourself, you’re not alone 

You’re just human

Micromanagement rarely starts with a desire to control people

It often starts with unconscious fear

Not dramatic, visible fear....the quieter kind

The kind that sounds perfectly reasonable in your own head….

“If this goes wrong, it’s on me.”
“It’s quicker if I do it myself.”

On the surface, that looks like diligence, high standards and being responsible

Underneath it, though, there’s often something else going on

For many leaders, it’s a subtle but damaging form of imposter syndrome

A nagging belief that if you’re not across everything, not the safety net, not visibly adding value at every stage, you might be found out

So you stay close, you tweak, review, and polish

And in doing so, you make yourself indispensable...nice work ;-)

It feels conscientious, maybe even noble

But over time, it teaches your team something unhelpful: 

“Don’t worry, the boss will catch it.” 

This has a huge hit on others' confidence, motivation, conscientiousness, initiative....

Then comes the moment when you decide you need to empower people - you want & need to step back, so you stop checking

And when the quality dips or solutions aren’t quite there yet, frustration (and more) kicks in

Fact: You can’t remove oversight and micromanagement overnight and call it empowerment

And....If hidden fear has been driving your need to stay close, delegating more tasks won’t solve it

If this is the case, this is what needs your attention first....

True empowerment is downstream from self-leadership


So next time you find yourself saying, “I’ll just check it,” pause for a second

Is it really about quality?

Or is it about protecting yourself 🤔

If you’re being made to feel small, uncomfortable, ridiculed….

Remember this guys words please

It’s not you who has the problem

And if it’s you doing the ‘damage’….

Check in with yourself… what is wrong with you???

Too many times I hear about bullying in the workplace … the perps are mainly the ones in charge

It’s not ok

Learn to understand why you feel the need to do this and how to lead better … and fast! 

{a note to all teachers…. Let’s have a bit more of this in schools please… the earlier we cement this message, the better}

Executive presence is often treated like some mysterious leadership quality 🔮

Something you either have…
or you don’t

But that’s not actually true 

I explored this yesterday while speaking at an International Women’s Day event, where we looked at what really sits behind executive presence

At its core, executive presence is simply:

How others experience your capability…..especially when the pressure is on

In the session we explored three pillars that help strengthen it:

1. Confidence…..The right level

2. Emotional Intelligence

3. Communication Effectiveness 


When these three work together, something pretty magical happens

You stay calm & controlled

You communicate clearly

And others experience you as someone they trust and want to follow

Which feels particularly relevant on International Women’s Day

Because the world doesn’t need more capable women waiting being held back or until they feel perfectly ready to shine brightly 🔆

It needs women who trust themselves, show up like the rockstars they …..and lead 💪
