Think Jerry Maguire for Job Seekers, Job Search Strategist, Job Coach

My clients have had a huge month in November, when everyone says no one hires. 

And they are senior job seekers who face ageism and fewer jobs. 

All of them accepted permanent roles that paid exceptionally well. Not contract roles. And not filler jobs. 

The common theme among them was a positive mindset. 

Despite the jobs numbers. Despite any discouragement. Despite how they felt. 

They were persistent day in and day out. They set their minds on doing the hard work that needed to be done. Mostly networking and not applying online. They showed up every day being positive despite their external challenges. 

Several of them faced significant external challenges with dire circumstances just about to unfold. 

Despite that, they showed up positive day in and day out. Even when discouraged and depressed. 

It makes all the difference. 

It may not be popular to say, but negativity is a turnoff to others. Others can hear it even when you don't say it out loud. It dims any enthusiasm as well. 

Choose joy in the midst of difficult circumstances. Joy is from internal circumstances. Happiness is based on external circumstances. 

Be hopeful. That is where joy comes from. 

Things can and do change overnight in a job search. I see it all the time! ❤️

People get hired by companies that previously rejected them. 

So, how you respond to a rejection after being interviewed matters. 

Here is a sample note I might send to a company I was impressed with and got rejected-

“Hi Name,

Thank you for the time and consideration you gave me. I enjoyed learning more about (something you discussed). Even though I wasn’t selected, I wish the person stepping into this role success. I’m still very interested in it and would love to apply again in the future. What would be the best way to keep in touch about future opportunities?

Talk soon,
Your name”

Short, sweet, and to the point. The best part is that you’ll make an impression in this market where many people respond angrily or don't respond at all. 

If it is a company with which you weren’t impressed, just move on. 

Have you ever asked to stay in touch with a company that interviewed you after they rejected you?

If you’re job seeking don't fall over into the victim camp. 

I see those people on LinkedIn daily. Spewing anger in their comments to anyone who has anything to do with hiring. They blame and typically believe the debunked ATS myth. Often, they are downright mean in their words to others. Blaming everyone. 

It is a choice to be that way. You are choosing to stay stuck. I can guarantee it will hold only one person back. You!

A job search is filled with fear, rejection, discouragement, and anger. 

But it's essential you don't get stuck in that mode for YOU!

It serves absolutely no purpose in your life. None. It does not help you. 

And we are stronger than we ever think. We can control our minds by choosing what to sit in and focus on. 

It doesn't mean you don't have down days or down weeks. Because you will, that's normal in a job search. 

It's that you don't stay in that mode. 

You don't lash out at others. Or blame others for your plight. 

Feeling down or discouraged, send me a note. I'll listen. I'll encourage you!

Do what's best for you. Be hopeful and go forward knowing it will all work out despite any difficulties.

The recruiting/hiring process would be a 💯 percent better if everyone would -

“Screen in versus screening out”

Try to find reasons why the job seeker fits versus absurd reasons why they don't fit. 

You can try to spin your personal bias in your mind. But they really have absolutely nothing to do with how someone would perform on the job or their character. 

Every single week, someone posts about “what” a job seeker should be doing. That has no reflection on how a job seeker would perform in a role. 

It gets old….and discouraging for job seekers. 

And not to mention, you're branding your company at the same time. 

Anyone else feel this same way?

Please don't send me a voice note when you don't know me. 

I find them intrusive. And I feel like they cross a boundary. 

I've had previous experiences with men crossing boundaries on Zoom. 
And in my DM’s so many times. 

I know that may seem strange to some people. 

And I know some people love them. That's great. But not me. 

So if I didn't respond to your first voice note, I won't respond to your second or third either. It's overkill. 

And no, I don't want to exchange ideas or get to know you. I am busy running a business. I need you to get right to the point. If there is a point, I am happy to jump on a call with you.

Closing is not just for sales. 

It's a small but key part of an interview, especially for senior-level job seekers. 

Some decision makers are waiting for it to happen. I have had hiring managers pass on qualified candidates simply because the job seeker didn't close. 

Here are some examples of what you might say:

"I have thoroughly enjoyed the process, and in particular learning about XYZ company, your plans, and how I can help you to achieve them".

"I am grateful for interviewing with you today. You have given me a clear overview of the position. I think my experience and accomplishments can provide value to the organization. 

You are reiterating your interest. And expressing how exciting and challenging you think the role would be, and what a good fit you'd be for it. 

And then close up with-

“Do you have any other questions about my background I can answer for you today?”

If this doesn't come naturally, practice closing in front of a mirror. You'll be surprised by how much it helps you in an actual interview.
