Why I believe the future of data engineering lies not in new tech but in teaching empathy and communication.

I started in data engineering with the belief that the latest tech would solve every problem.

That mindset shifted.

Here's why: it's not just about the tools.

It's about understanding the humans behind the data.

In my journey from data analyst to data engineering leader, I've learned that the hardest problems aren't technical.

They're human.

When I was tasked with transforming raw data into insights, I quickly realised that many organisations were drowning in fragmented data.

Not because they lacked technology, but because they lacked communication.

→ Data was siloed.

→ Teams didn't talk to each other.

→ Processes were inefficient.

So I focused on:

1. Building Bridges: I brought together diverse teams, ensuring everyone understood the data's value and purpose.

It wasn’t just about algorithms.

I played professional rugby in Uganda, got fired after 4 months, and sold a startup before I turned 30.

7 Secret Tools I'm Using Daily

I just had an email epiphany.
And I got 29 more leads overnight.

I sent one follow-up email to the same list. 

The email had almost identical messaging to those I'd sent before, minus one small tweak and 32 days since I last time I contacted them. 

I call this the "30-day Cool Down Play." 

The reply rate went from 5.49% to 6.95%, a 26.6% uplift. 

My positive reply rate remained at 31%.

The reason this works is that people use their inboxes in a certain way.

Emails get lost and missed. 
They intend to reply but get distracted by a colleague.

I've been doing this for 7 years, and I'm shocked this still works. It feels way too simple.

It’s the Evergreen Campaign.

For many founders who are just getting started with marketing or sales, it’s all they need to begin signing clients predictably. 

When referrals and word of mouth become inconsistent, having a reliable way to reach out to ideal clients becomes a priority. 

Despite the noise, cold email remains the easiest and most cost-effective way to achieve that.

I typically teach two complementary campaigns for businesses that want to scale quickly and build a significant pipeline.

But if you only need a handful of clients each month, one well-built Evergreen Campaign can be more than enough.

It looks something like this:

[1] Set up domains and inboxes to ensure your emails land in inboxes and get read (Inbox Infrastructure)

[2] Build precise lists with verified email addresses of your ideal clients. Use a tool like BetterContact. (List Precision Principles)

[3] Offer something that people genuinely want and need. If you understand your customers, this is easy. (Offer Velocity Theory)

I just started a 90-Day Discipline Sprint to build these 6 habits.


I’ve always been disciplined.

But I haven't tracked my inputs daily since my daughter was born. Plenty of life getting in the way. 

But now she's older, and we're in a more of a routine as a family, I'm leaning hard into the discipline. 

I want to finish the year strong by locking in the habits and skills I’ve been building all year.

And the better husband, dad, and founder I become.

→ This drives new leads and supplements the 20+ calls I’m already booking each month through The Consistent Clients Blueprint (gotta be dogfooding). 

[2] Send 3 Emails to my List weekly

→ Every time I hit send, at least one person replies asking how they can join my 1:1 program. I started focusing on my newsletter in July, and I'm at around 660 subscribers so far. I want to finish the year at 1,000.

[3] Produce 3 New Trainings for my Clients weekly

→ I'm already pretty good at this, but I want to make sure I'm over-delivering and helping the founders I work with grow their businesses. 


PERSONAL

[4] Time in the Word daily

→ This is the biggest unlock for being the best version of myself in everything I do. It gets my mind and heart right before anything else.

[5] Lift weights three times per week

→ I've always played sports and exercised a lot, but that's lessened recently. I notice anxious energy building when I'm not picking heavy things up and putting them back down. I'm a simple guy.

[6] Run 2x per week

→ This one will be the trickiest. And I'm already falling behind. I have an Achilles injury I'm rehabbing, and it's making it easy not to run. 

These are my cornerstone habits.

Everything else falls into alignment when I nail these. 

I'll report back next month with a status update.

We can't have people looking over your shoulder and seeing more than 3 tabs open. 

It's just not cricket (one for my UK followers).

Here’s a quick fix for the founder who keeps 47 tabs open for “later.”

[Step 1]

→ Select all the tabs you have open for a project or idea.

[Step 2]

→ Right-click and select “Add Tabs to New Group.”

[Step 3]

→ Name the group “[T] – [topic]” 
→ "[T]" stands for temporary, ie, you don't need to keep these tabs forever.
→ "[topic]" is where you write a descriptive name for all those oh-so-important Subreddits and design inspo sites.

[Step 4]

→ Right-click on the group and CLOSE IT.
→ Chrome will save it to your bookmarks bar (see below).

[Step 5]

→ Enjoy the calm emptiness of a Chrome browser in its optimum state. 
→ Next time you want those tabs, just open the folder and pick up where you left off.

[BONUS] 

→ You’re no longer giving anyone who looks over your shoulder crippling anxiety at the sight of your browser.
