If someone tells you that your resume isn't "ATS Compatible"....𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘁.

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗧𝗦:

An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is a glorified filing cabinet for recruiters.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀:
- organizes job postings
- organizes candidate profiles
- holds candidate resumes
- allows a recruiter to search the database and manage the various stages of the hiring process

A company's job posting page is the front end (user facing side) of that ATS.

When you apply and attach your resume, you're building your candidate record and attaching your resume to to your record in the ATS.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝘆 "𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲" 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰:

𝟭. 𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗘 𝗧𝗬𝗣𝗘
As long as you're submitting a supported file type (PDF, Word Document), your resume is going to go into the ATS. Probably safe to say you can't doodle a resume and submit it as a .JPG file, but I'm pretty sure you're not doing that anyway. So, you're good here.

𝟮. 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗧 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚
If you've formatted your resume with lots of columns and tables, it might not parse (that's mostly fancy talk for 'fill in the blanks for you on your application'). Typically, you'll be required to fill in the blanks to complete an application. So either your resume will do it for you...or you will do it. But either way, your info gets entered. So, you're good here, too.

𝟯. 𝗞𝗘𝗬𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗦.
People selling "ATS Compatible" resumes are all about the keyword gimmicks. They'll tell you the ATS is going to scan your resume for keywords. Truthfully, an ATS *can* do that, but as long as you're writing a resume that talks about things relevant to the job you want...you're probably going to hit on those keywords anyway. So, there really isn't some sort of magic that can happen here. Just talk about stuff relevant to the job and give examples of how you were good at those things. This isn't Harry Potter level stuff.

𝟰. 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘'𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗘𝗟𝗦𝗘
That's right. There's the file type, the format, and the content and none of those things are going to cause the ATS to reject you or flag your resume as 'not compatible'.

These systems are built to take information from random people and make a recruiter's life easy...they aren't meant to be Fort Knox with a secret code to be cracked.

Which means..............people telling you that ATS Compatibility is your problem....are kinda sorta totally absolutely knowingly selling you a heaping pile of garbage advice.

And I think that's a rude thing to do to jobseekers 🧡

Last week, I paid someone to do something I probably could’ve done myself.😅

My taxes.

Normally, I just file them myself using TurboTax. Easy.

But 2025 was a little different.

I worked a W2 job for the first 7 months of the year… and then launched my own business at the end of August.

So I figured it was worth getting some professional help this time around. I’d hate to mess something up and then get audited.🫠

Sure, I probably could have still filed them myself. But I’m really glad I didn’t.

Because the CPA didn’t just file my taxes.

We talked about small business finances and best practices. He answered a lot of questions I didn’t even know I should be asking yet.

And that alone made it worth the investment.

Sometimes you’re not paying for someone to do something you can’t do. You’re paying for their experience, perspective, and guidance.

So this week I’m making a couple of big moves:
• Changing my tax status from sole proprietorship to S-Corp (woooo!🥳) • Moving off spreadsheets and onto actual accounting software (guess I’m a real business owner now)

2026 is my first full year in business.🤩

And while it’s a little scary living in the unknown and not knowing exactly how much revenue you’ll make…

It’s also REALLY exciting.

I want to see just how far I can take this.👀

Entrepreneurs: what’s one thing you finally outsourced that you wish you had done sooner?

Two and a half years ago, I experienced my first layoff.

Then 8 months ago, I experienced my second.

The joys of working in tech. Startup life.🫠

But, fortunately, it led me to something better. Something of my own.

I had a decision to make: be a job seeker or be an entrepreneur.

I’ve been a job seeker before.
But I’d never been an entrepreneur.

Honestly, I’d never even thought about it. So I decided it was about damn time I thought about it.😅

I could go down the road less traveled or go down the path that felt “safer”. But the more I thought about it, the less safe staying in the corporate world felt. 

Ultimately, I decided to bet on myself and give this whole solopreneur thing a go.

And I haven’t looked back since. Not once.🥳

In fact, earlier this month my CPA advised me to switch my tax election from sole proprietorship to S-Corp. I’m now all in, getting set up on accounting and payroll platforms.
 
If you’ve ever experienced a layoff, please know that it does NOT define you. 

It is absolutely not a reflection of your worth or your abilities.

We all go through tough seasons. 
Some tougher than others…

And if you would’ve told me a year ago that I’d be running my own personal branding business today, I wouldn’t have believed you.

I probably would’ve laughed.

But now, here I am, with nearly 20 clients on monthly retainers.

Don’t be afraid to start over.
Make your own damn luck.

Because after the rain, comes the sunshine.☀️

Be specific. Share your POV. Share a unique experience and the lesson you learned. Share how you responded to a problem. Be vulnerable.

It sounds relatively simple, but most people don’t do it. 

Generic tips and frameworks don’t stop the scroll. What does are real, lived experiences. Personal stories and the lessons behind them. 

If people have a question or want advice, they can ask Claude or GPT. You need to give them something different. Something more.

This is a networking platform. Build relationships. Build trust. Give people a reason to follow you.

So before you hit post, ask yourself: could anyone else have written this?

If the answer is yes, you're not done yet.💫

If you only think of LinkedIn as a job board, you’re reallyyy missing out.😮‍💨

Sure, people find jobs here.
I’ve found jobs here.

But that’s honestly one of the least interesting things about this platform.

LinkedIn is THE place to:
• build a reputation • share what you know • create opportunities that don’t exist yet
• connect with people you’d never meet otherwise
• land clients, investors, or speaking opportunities

LinkedIn is a networking platform.

The goal here is to build trust and relationships with others. To support and learn from one another. To share insights and add value.

The opportunities LinkedIn has brought into my life over the years NEVER would’ve found me if I hadn’t been consistently showing up here.

Because of LinkedIn, I was able to pivot careers. I’ve been invited onto podcasts. I’ve spoken at events. I get brand deals.

And I somehow fell into entrepreneurship.😂

All because I decided to show up, share my ideas, and connect with people. And I haven’t stopped.

So yes, LinkedIn can definitely help you find a job.

But opportunities tend to find you when you show up consistently and give without expecting anything in return.

Don’t log in only when you’re job searching. Don’t stop using LinkedIn once you’ve landed a new job.

You’ll miss out on soooooo much personal and professional growth, and some pretty incredible opportunities.

Commit to LinkedIn for 12 months and see what happens.👀

Don’t forget to change your clocks this weekend!⏰🗓️

Back to 1999, preferably.

You can’t go to the gym once, eat a salad, and suddenly expect a six-pack. Right?😅

This is how wayyyy too many people treat LinkedIn. Results don’t work like that.

You can’t log into LinkedIn once a month, publish one post, and then wonder why you’re not attracting clients and opportunities.

LinkedIn is a long game, and it does require a certain amount of time and effort.

Building a presence here works the same way as building strength in the gym.💪🏻

Consistency is what drives results. The more regularly you show up, the stronger the outcome becomes.

Over time you build: ✅ visibility
✅ credibility ✅ momentum
✅ relationships

But if you only show up sporadically, progress is slow. And the results won’t be as great as they could have been.🤷🏻‍♀️

It takes time to build muscle. And it takes time to build trust and make a name for yourself online.

The people seeing the biggest results here aren’t the ones posting and engaging once in a while. They’re the ones who keep showing up, day after day.

So be committed. Don’t give up. And reap the benefits.🥳

6 months ago, I launched my own business.
On August 25, 2025.🗓️

And I’m a big believer in building in public.
So here goes nothing!👇

4 years ago, I was just getting started on LinkedIn. I had less than 500 connections, an outdated profile, and NO IDEA what I was doing.😅

But I was determined to leave teaching and start a new career. So I did. 

I built my personal brand from scratch and it completely changed my life:
→ Grew to 15K followers organically in 6 months (54K+ in 4 years)
→ Landed 3 full-time job offers within 100 days of quitting teaching
→ Secured freelance work, podcast features, speaking gigs, and paid brand partnerships

Now, I’m running my own business with all inbound clients:
✔️ 7 speaking engagements
✔️ $33,000 in revenue
✔️ 3 live brand deals
✔️ 18 clients

If you would’ve told me a year ago that I’d be an entrepreneur, I would’ve said “nah.”

I opened it, read it, and began to cry.😭

It was sent to me in March of 2021 by a former student — one year before I resigned from teaching.

I am ———, your past 5th grader in 2014! I found your email address on the AACPS website and I am beyond happy being able to contact you again! 

I am a current Junior attending ——— ———  high school as a STEM student specialized in the green technology program! I have grown a lot by now and I wanted to see how you were doing! I hope you are doing well in virtual learning and these tough times! 

I never got to say thank you for always being so supportive of me and for giving me the confidence to do well in school and to pursue my dreams! 

I still remember the times where you brought peppers in a bag for lunch! You were my most memorable teacher, partially for your taste in unique snacks, but more so because you were my closest friend.🙂 I also still have your blue/black tote bag from graduation day!

And then I got to the 8th.

It was a bag I'd had since childhood. It had an A on it for Angela, and I gave it to her on the last day of 5th grade.

I had completely forgotten it existed.
But six years later, she still had it.

After 8 years of teaching, I left the profession and broke into tech in 2022. Now, I run my own personal branding business.

And this student is now a senior in college.🤯

She was one of the brightest, most capable kids I ever taught. I don't know what her major is or what she's planning next, but I do know she's going to leave her mark on this world.

Educators, what you do every single day matters. You are changing lives, even when you can't see it. Even when no one says it out loud.

Sometimes, years later, a student finds your email address on the internet…

And she reminds you that you changed hers.💕
