A while ago, I got a message that genuinely stuck with me.

“Hi… I’m from a non-technical background. I’ve been in HR for years, 
but I want to move into cybersecurity. Be honest, am I being unrealistic?”

Let’s call her Annie.
Annie had built a solid career.

She understood people, processes, confidentiality, and risk.
But none of that sounded like cybersecurity to her.

What she saw online was intimidating:
• Complex job descriptions
• Heavy technical jargon
• A narrative that cyber is only for coders

So she assumed:
“If I didn’t start early, I missed the window.”
That assumption is where most people get stuck.
The truth is, cybersecurity doesn’t just need technical depth.

This nearly broke my patience.

Leadership requires uncomfortable conversations.

Many early cyber leaders avoid difficult conversations.

Not because they’re weak.

Because they want collaboration.

They soften risk language.
Delay escalation.
Hope alignment appears naturally.

But in cybersecurity, silence compounds risk.

Here’s the leadership reality I eventually learned.

When difficult conversations are avoided, three things happen:

1️⃣ Risks remain misunderstood

3️⃣ Trust slowly erodes

Clear conversations may feel uncomfortable.

But unclear conversations are far more expensive.

Strong cyber leaders don’t create unnecessary conflict.

But they also don’t avoid clarity.

Early leadership makes this mistake.

I definitely did too.

When many professionals step into cyber leadership, they believe something simple:

Say yes.

Yes to requests.
Yes to new projects.
Yes to every “urgent” issue.

Because saying yes feels like proving value.

But over time, something becomes obvious.

Every “yes” quietly creates a new trade-off.

Focus disappears.
Strategic work gets delayed.
Teams become reactive instead of intentional.

I learned this lesson through a simple contrast:

❌ Saying yes to everything creates chaos
✓ Saying yes selectively creates strategy

Leadership isn’t about being available to every request.

It’s about protecting the work that actually matters.

Strong cyber leaders don’t manage volume.

They manage priorities.

Because cybersecurity isn’t a field that rewards activity.

It rewards clarity.

And clarity often requires saying no.

Leadership isn’t replication.
