I’m focusing more on increasing the quality of the content I appear in. And while working from home and having two kiddos around the house is great, it’s very important that when it’s time to be “on” with a client or in a podcast that there are no inturruptions and the presentation is solid.

You know when a playbook has 20 plays but the team only actually wins with 6 of them? That's what most sales coaching looks like today. I recently met with a company seeking help with call coaching. 

Their managers were struggling to have productive reviews with sellers. Guess how many scoring criteria they had for every call...

Over 20. And this isn't just a human-coaching problem. Nearly every AI tool I see for sales coaching gives pages of slop as feedback. 

It's hard to bring clarity when there are more than twenty different categories for delivering feedback. 

I'm sure those 20 grading criteria were all valuable things to score. But how much more effective and simple would coaching be if managers simply picked the top 5-6 things and stuck with them for every coaching session? We look at just six things when evaluating and scoring a call. 

1. Discovery abilities (worth 25 points)
2. Qualification (15 points)
3. Problem - Solution matching (15 points)
4. Q&A + Objection Handling (15 points)
5. Learning Timeline + Providing Clear Next Steps (15 points)
6. Locking in the next conversation or closing (15 points)

Total of 100 points. All that you need to do is know what poor, partial, and excellent looks like for your sellers across these six steps to get a very accurate and helpful score of a call 

My guess is that all 27 scoring criteria in the company I was telling you about likely map to these six steps. But overwhelm leads to confusion. 

If you're looking for a simple sales training analogy, here's one. 

Closing a sale is like crossing a bridge. And if even one of these six things is skipped or done poorly, there's a gap in your bridge that a customer can't cross. 

The best teams don't win because they have the most plays. They win because they execute a few plays well that guide buyers across the bridge.
