Why are humans so TERRIBLE with money?

After digging through history, psychology, and behavioral science, I finally figured it out.

𝟭. 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁.
↳ To our ancestors, relationships were wealth.
↳ To our ancestors, fitting in was survival.

𝟮. “𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁” 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁.
↳ Our ancestors didn't live long enough to plan for "old age".
↳ They worked till they died at 35 years old.

𝟯. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘁𝘀.
↳ Our ancestors couldn’t store food.
↳ They didn't know when the next meal would come.
↳ They had to eat NOW, or face potential starvation/thirst.

𝟰. 𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.
↳ Schools ignore it entirely.
↳ Parents aren’t equipped.

And number 4 REALLY bothers me.

We expect people to be good with money.

But we don’t teach them how.

Society pretends like money skills are common sense.

They’re not.

𝗜𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴:

Money makes no sense to our caveman brains.

And it never will unless we learn how to use it on purpose.

Everyone thinks a great investor makes great returns.

But here’s what actually makes a great investor:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
↳ Market beating returns
↳ Finding “the next big thing”
↳ Skilled at timing the market
↳ Rarely having a negative year

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
↳ Patience over decades
↳ Structuring for tax-efficiency
↳ Sustainable, long-term returns
↳ Not panicking when markets fall
↳ Embracing the boring part of investing

Great investing isn’t sexy.
