It's Monday, and if you're in the US, that means it's Thanksgiving week.

So what is the one thing you're going to do for yourself today?

You know that moment in an interview when you nail the STAR framework? Situation laid out perfectly. Task defined. Action explained. Result delivered with a bow on top.

And then... crickets.

So what happens when your STAR goes supernova?

I've been on both sides of this. Asked the questions. 
Given the answers. 
And I've watched brilliant engineers stumble through perfectly structured responses that somehow land flat.

The problem? STAR assumes your interviewer is following along. 
That they understand the context. 
That they're tracking with you.
But sometimes they're not.

Maybe they've never worked in your domain. 
Maybe they don't get why your architecture decision mattered. 
Maybe they're just... tired. (We've all been there.)

* First, watch their face. I know, sounds obvious. But seriously... if their eyes glaze over during your Situation, you've lost them. Stop. Reset. Try a different angle.

* Second, make it stupid simple. I don't care how complex the problem was. If you can't explain it like you're talking to your non-tech friend at a bar, you don't understand it well enough yet.

* Third, skip the humble brag. "We improved performance by 47.3% using a novel distributed caching strategy" sounds impressive. It also sounds rehearsed. Try: "The system was slow. Users hated it. We fixed it."

*And here's the part that'll save you: know when to cut your losses. If your STAR answer isn't landing, don't double down. Don't add more detail. Don't explain harder.
Just... check in.
"Did that answer your question?"

That single question has saved more interviews than perfect responses ever will.

We all have our stories to tell. 
But to be great at it we need to do more.
It's reading the room. 
Adapting. 
Connecting.

STAR is just scaffolding. 

Your job is to tell the story worth a job offer.

May you live in interesting times.
And what's more interesting than watching companies throw bags of money at pied pipers promising some mythical AGI beast that'll do everything (including the kitchen sink) for the low price of whatever humanity you've got left?

AI is just the latest FOMO event society needs to survive.
And we will survive.
And AI will survive.

Then everyone gets back to doing what they always did… just with an AI overlord implanted in their workflow.

Look, folks shouting about the AI bubble aren't anti-AI. 
Many of us enjoy the bitter fruits of this thing.
Same way I know too much prosciutto will send my cardiologist into a fit, but I'll still hunt it down at the holiday buffet.

AI, in its current form, is completely uneconomical.

It's like becoming a professional Dog Agility competitor. Fun. The dog does awesome tricks. But even if you become the world champion, the sport's still a money sink.

That's how companies approach AI right now. Throw money at it. Cut other resources to afford the sink. See little, if anything, in returns.
If companies were truly making record profits from AI, we'd be having a different conversation.
Other than chipmakers… you really can't name many.

During a bubble, this is expected.
But if AI were truly transformational, why is there still such a high barrier to entry?
You get a lot of folks making some interesting prototypes, but then realizing they've got a lot more work to make it actually do anything useful. 

Or, you spend a few months working on an Agentic workflow, only for someone to jailbreak the chatbot and give themselves free flights to Fiji for life.
And because you "let go" all your human travel agents, you don't catch the mistake until next quarter when all those first class flights suddenly show up in the red.

Don't get me wrong... there are a ton of use cases where AI excels. But many of them are still cheaper and less complicated using non-AI solutions.
The benefits aren't at "replace all my developers" levels. More like "enhance autocomplete" levels of performance.
I'm hopeful things continue to improve. Maybe we eventually get to a point where automation actually lives up to the hype.

But until then? We've got companies slapping four chatbots on their website and praying shareholders don't start asking for the bill.

We're drowning in AI slop. 
Every other startup is slapping AI on their name.
Every platform, every product, every Slack channel has some LLM bolted onto it like Hector's supped up Honda Civic. 

Most of it? Useless theater.

But voice trees?

This is the one place where AI has actually proven itself. Natural language processing works. Intent recognition works. The tech is there, battle-tested, and ready.

So why are we still building digital mazes that trap customers in loops? 
Why are we forcing people to speak commands like they're haggling with a dungeon gatekeeper from 1997?

If you're leading a dev team and you're considering where to deploy AI... maybe start with the places people actually suffer. 
Not some shiny new AI partnership just to make the stakeholders swoon. 

Fix the phone trees first.

Because right now? Your customers are smashing zero like it's a game of whack-a-mole, just trying to reach a human who can help them before their mortgage payment comes due this month.

We have the tools. 
Let's use them where they matter.

You've been job hunting for what, 30 seconds? Already applied to three fake jobs, had 6 of your applications get ghosted, and 14 "recruiters" just slid into your DMs selling magic ATS beans and a $500 resume template.

Fun times.
But are things really this bad? Or are we fighting a bad case of "Perception is 9/10ths of the battle?" 

So let me take you somewhere imaginary for a minute. 
Call it Jobtopia.

In Jobtopia, every job posting is real. Every application gets a screening call. If there's a match, you interview the next day. If there's an opening, you get an offer two days later. Companies fill vacancies in three days, tops.

Even there, people are struggling.

Say you're the world's greatest fly wrangler. Most companies only need one. You take a sabbatical, come back refreshed, and… crickets. Not because you're bad at wrangling. Because everyone already has a wrangler. No one's leaving. Startups aren't starting. So you wait.

Eventually a position opens. But so do 10 other hopeful wranglers. Now it's down to 9. Then 8. Then 7. You keep waiting. Your number finally comes up 18 months later.

Not three days. Eighteen months.

How about the other side of the equation?
Take those roles everyone wants… like "AI Software Prompt Vibe Coding Engineer Technician First Class." Companies are fighting over talent. The number one vibe coding company wants to stay number one, so it posts 100,000 new roles. Offers free prep courses. Everyone flocks.
Their competitor sees this. Posts 200,000 roles plus free taco tuesdays for life.

Suddenly everyone's fighting to join these two giants. 
The market for everyone else dries up. Other companies still need these folks, so they raise rates to attract talent. But all they get are flunkies from the prep courses. 
And since this is the hottest job anywhere, they're drowning in applications from folks not even remotely qualified.

The three-day hiring processes became 300-day war of attrition just to get your screening call. 

Other companies also want to look competitive, so they start posting for "vibe coders" even though they don't even have computers. 
Gotta keep the stockholders happy.
Now candidates are sending out hundreds of resumes and competing against thousands.

The hiring process didn't fundamentally change. 
People are still getting hired. 
It's just taking forever because a few big moves created massive ripples. Volume strangled the system.
Like Richard King says, there's a massive misalignment between skills and location.

And that's in jobtopia.
Out here? In the real world? It's worse.

So when someone tells you they landed a role in two weeks and you should just "network better"... that's survivorship bias talking. They got lucky. The timing lined up. The stars aligned. 

Congratulate them.... then fix your fundamentals, and keep on keeping on.
Your number will get called.
