Reaching the highest mountains seems a very good theme to start the year. After getting close to Aconcagua (the highest mountain outside Asia) in the first week of Jan., it's now time to head to #Davos. There our teams will join up with thought leaders, bringing together perspectives from different regions, sectors and functions to discuss how to progress the important topics of our time from technology and business to sustainability and societal questions.

Did Davos go downhill? Not for all! 
As I am driving back on the train from the beautiful mountain tops, I reflect on the intense encounters and talks that I was honored to partake in.

🟡 AI enabled reinvention 
Next to geopolitics, AI was the dominating topic and we discussed the required reinvention mindset. Hasmeet Kaur shared on our panel how AI enables ultrafast adjustments in the automotive space as customer experience insights are instantly available. Cristina Dolan talked about her startup helping to improve organ transplant success rate by better AI enabled data. I heard many discussions on the need for data clean-up, dynamic IT architecture and of course up- and reskilling.

🔴 Technology and learning new skills
If technology is developing faster than our learning and training ability, how do we take the right choices? It starts with sparking and cultivating curiosity and makes us disrupt operating models and processes, ideally with zero based approaches. Importantly, optimistic voices see AI based job displacements as a way to solve the demographic labor shortage in the Western world, while the forward looking ones alert us to be prepared for greater shifts.

🟢 AI for sustainable advantage
I replay the framework shared by Antonia Wanner "be, see, act" which allows for companies to align actions with values, measure for transparency of KPIs and act with greater impact. And sustainability goals need to be pursued with urgency and patience at the same time as we sync AI and sustainability transformations, as Anke Hampel reinforced. And we all agreed, that we need to always start from business value creation and problems to solve.

🔵 Trust and resilience
While the just released #EdelmanTrustBarometer shows further inward development of people trusting only familiar bubbles and narrowing their world views, Davos brought together lots of responsible leaders that are standing and acting based on their values. For instance, the Google Gemini team paused its face‑generation functionality when diversity gaps appeared. Others discussed the importance of widening risk management to resilience management.

🟣 (Female) leadership and collaboration
More than ever, in our disrupted, uncertain, volatile times, we need partnership, allyship, working together to tackle the worlds toughest problems. Being part of communities like WORLD WOMAN FOUNDATION Generation CEO e.V. #IMAGINE reinforced my own confidence and will to be a changemaker.

When does a hybrid workshop work? When passionate leaders come together for a powerful purpose. This happened today at our Generation CEO e.V. Mentoring kickoff 2026, where Generation CEO leaders will mentor curated and matched mentees for the next 6 months.

It was a pleasure to orchestrate this event together with Dr. Meike Schäffler and Anja Hartmann and host it as Roland Berger team in our beautiful office in Frankfurt Opernturm - see pic for impressions. 

Beyond a lot of important wisdom about effective mentoring and best practices from Dr. Marion Welp, LL.M (Att. at Law N.Y.), we've gotten a glimpse into the findings of Dr. David Born, head of the Roland Berger Institute. In his talk "Beyond tariffs" he gave us the bigger picture on economic and geopolitical developments, and the changing power balance as we are entering the so-called Pacific century.

What tells you when people are not leaving an event after the official end? That you triggered something, in this case to rethink the role of CMOs and operating models beyond in times of uncertainty and (AI) disruption.

This happened in Zurich today with an in-depth breakfast discussion with CxOs and CMOs from BtC to BtB on our new study "License to lead - The CXO perspective on the future role of CMOs" in Zurich. 

Sharing some of the points here:
👉 Marketing doesn’t have the influence it deserves in the boardroom and needs to reclaim it. 
👉 Marketing needs to focus on the key value drivers in the company and industry
👉 Marketing roles should be reframed for instance as chief growth officer and leaders should take the role where it can inspire growth. 
👉 It is important to keep functional tensions for instance between portfolio management, sales and marketing
👉 Marketing KPI need to be speaking the language of the P&L or get connected to that
👉 There is a fear of cost down, but not enough management members take budget reductions as a chance for transformation
👉 We have a strong role to coach the next generation to apply AI, but learn the critical thinking and discerning what’s true and important
