Is lack of self-awareness funny?


I came across a video that made me laugh.

A man confidently said his best subject was English.
But throughout the interview… his English was clearly not his best subject.

It was funny.
But it also reminded me of something deeper.

His low self-awareness made the clip entertaining.

But in real life, low self-awareness isn’t funny.

In leadership, self-awareness shapes everything.

How we communicate.
How we show up under pressure.

How our words land on others.
Without it, we may believe we’re being clear when others feel confused.

We may think we’re being decisive when others feel shut down.

And the truth is, all of us have blind spots.

The work of leadership is not pretending we don’t.

It’s having the humility to discover them.

Because growth doesn’t start with confidence.

It starts with awareness.

The Choice Map is one of the clearest illustrations of Carol Dweck’s growth mindset in action.

In a recent coaching session, a leader said:
“They’re underperforming. I’ve explained it so many times.”

Frustration. Pressure. Blame creeping in.

That’s the judger path: reactive, justified, draining.

So I asked:

“If we assume they’re capable, what else could be true?”

Pause.

“Maybe I wasn’t as clear as I thought.”

That’s the learner path: constructive, accountable, energising.

Judger asks:

“Who’s at fault?”

Learner asks:

“What might I be missing?”

The judger path protects the ego.

The learner path builds the leader.

Leadership tension is real.

Deadlines. 
Performance gaps. Expectations.

But the question you choose in that moment determines the culture you create.

Because when leaders move from judgement to learning,
they don’t just solve the problem.

They grow the system.

And that’s where real performance begins.

Position changes perspective.
Perspective shapes performance.


In this picture, I’m holding an experiential activity called PersActive.


It looks simple.
But the moment you shift your position,
the entire image changes.

Same object.
Different view.

And if I’m honest, this is where many teams struggle.

Not because people are incapable.
Not because they don’t care.

But because they are standing in different positions.

Operations sees risk.

Sales sees possibility.

Finance sees numbers.

HR sees impact.

Everyone is right  from where they stand.

Leadership tension often comes from assuming
my perspective is the truth.

But growth begins when we move.

When we ask,
“What are you seeing that I’m not?”

That shift - small, humble, human- changes conversations.

Changes decisions.

Changes culture.

I’m looking forward to facilitating this group with this activity.


Because sometimes, the breakthrough doesn’t come from better arguments.


It comes from better positioning.

The birthday of mankind.


A day that reminds us:

I’m reminded that success doesn’t mean perfection.

马到成功 isn’t about getting everything right.

It’s about showing up,
moving forward even when you’re unsure,
and having the courage to continue, imperfectly.

We celebrate real people.

“You don’t know how to win.
You only know how not to lose.”


When I first heard that line, I didn’t feel attacked.

I felt seen.

Because if I’m honest, there have been seasons where I wasn’t trying to win.

I was just trying not to fail.
Not to disappoint.
Not to drop the ball.
Not to risk what I had worked so hard to build.

When you carry responsibility for a team, a business, a family, playing safe can feel like love.

Like care.
Like maturity.

But slowly… something inside shrinks.

In chess, you don’t win by protecting every piece.

You win by sacrificing the right one.

In life and leadership, the sacrifices are rarely dramatic.
It’s letting go of the need to be liked.

Admitting you don’t know.
Making a decision without full certainty.

Outgrowing the version of you that once kept everything stable.

And that’s uncomfortable.
Because growth doesn’t just ask for strategy.

It asks for courage.

Sometimes the thing we’re protecting isn’t the business or the team.

It’s our ego.
Our identity.
Our fear.

And that’s human.

There’s no shame in wanting safety.

But there comes a moment when protecting everything
means growing nothing.

And maybe that’s the quiet tension many leaders carry.


Not “Am I good enough?”
But “What must I release to grow?”

Nothing right. Nothing left.


I came across a funny clip.

A clown looks right and says,
“There’s nothing right.”

Then he looks left and says,
“There’s nothing left.”

Wordplay. Funny.

But also very relatable.

Some Fridays feel exactly like that.

Nothing right.
Nothing left.
Brain empty.

Maybe the answer isn’t to push harder.

Maybe it’s just time to pause.

Rest. 
Reset.

Because sometimes what’s left…
is simply the weekend.

Embarking on the Journey of Growth: Talent Development, Learning, Employee Engagement, Culture, and in Life!

Grateful and proud to see another AIA Singapore Leaders Offsite come to life.

This is my second year planning, coordinating, and delivering this experience for our senior leaders — it reminds me that our leaders take precious time away not for activities, logistics, or decks, but for what truly matters: alignment, connection, and shared values.

What stayed with me (beyond the intense discussions to shape these 2 days, endless planning, and sleepless nights with the organising team), were the moments that truly remind me why I do what I do:

1. Honest, courageous conversations
2. Leaders showing up with real vulnerability, authenticity, and perspective
3. A shared sense of ownership for the future we are building together

Because real leadership alignment isn’t built in boardrooms — it’s built through relationships, clarity of purpose, courage to face challenges and genuine human connection.

Marketing Communications Specialist at AIA Singapore

Have you ever realised that your greatest strength… might also be your blind spot?

Today at AIA Singapore, I attended the Unbox Your Strengths course by Fabian Lim 林 罡 远 — and it gave me a lot to reflect on.

Before the session, we completed a strengths assessment. 

My top 5 came out as:
Communication, Competition, Harmony, Activator, Achiever.

I always assumed “Command” would be up there — so that surprised me.
But what stayed with me more wasn’t the ranking.

It was this:

Your bottom strengths aren’t your weaknesses.
They’re just… your non-dominant hand.

And your top strengths?
When overused, they can work against you.

We explored the idea of the balcony (bright side) and the basement (dark side). I.e. expressive vs talkative

For me, communication can mean #clarity, energy and connection.
But in the basement, it can also feel like… too much.

That was a moment of honesty I didn’t expect.

I left the session with more than just insights — but a deeper awareness of how I show up, especially under pressure. And a reminder that growth isn’t about changing who you are, but learning how to use your strengths with intention.
