But since diving into Creative Strategy, it’s been almost TOO FUN coming up with ideas, hooks, angles, scripting, etc. and coming up with the visuals.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. 

Sometimes a dog just bites you...just like business, or clients sometimes. But you clean the wound, put some Microdacyn spray on it, and learn from it. 

Or learn nothing at all, like in this case. 

Also, dog bites hurt.

Having problems with your emails? Most of those aren't email problems.


You send a campaign, with that huff of confidence that comes from the heart you put into it. But then it flops. 

Who do we usually blame?
-the subject line
-the design
-the send time
-Trump

But more often than not, the real issue is much simpler: The message isn't clear about why the reader should care. 

Ask yourself the following question before tweaking an email: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫'𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞? If the answer isn't obvious, then back to the drawing board it is. 

Sometimes the fix isn't better (shady) email tactics. It's simply better messaging. Or, as I like to say, "write like you speak."

When a campaign underperforms, what do you check first? 
A) The subject line/open rate
B) The message

Hey, did you already do your daily obsessive inbox-swiping? Some emails just don't cut it, right?

Most emails don't fail because of bad copy. They fail because the reader doesn't see themselves in it. Like you, every morning, when you swipe those emails faster than Tinder prospects in your area.

If I read an email and think, "this isn't really for me..." I'm out faster than I skip ads on YouTube. 

That's the real challenge. Not writing better sentences, but making the reader feel like, "I can see myself in this..." This can be done by telling a story where the prospect is the hero, and you are the guide towards happiness and fulfillment. 

Sometimes the problem isn't the email. It's the message behind it. 

So, what makes you instantly ignore an email?

Features don't sell. Neither do benefits. Here's what does:


Stories.

Advice used to go, "Don't talk about features. Talk about benefits."

And for a time, that worked. Today, it's boring. Just like, 

-"Save time"
-"Boost productivity"
-"Improve performance"

Your customers and prospects have heard it all before. A lot. Now, what actually grabs attention is context of a bigger picture. 

Instead of saying what a product does, you gotta show where it fits in someone's life. Be the guide that helps the hero save the day.

Not: "Save time with our software."

But instead: "Be done reconciling spreadsheets in 10 minutes. Your Sunday nights will thank you."

Same benefit but a different vibe. A more profound one. One that does resonate. Deeply. 

People don't buy features, of course. They don't even buy benefits anymore. They buy a picture of a better moment in their life. Give it to them.
