Should creators cap platform revenue at 15%?

I’ve been sitting with this thought after a recent conversation with Derral Eves, and it keeps coming back to one word: control.

AdSense is great.
Brand deals are great.
Platform-driven revenue can be a powerful accelerant.

But these are also the least predictable income streams in the stack.

Earlier in my career, when I was at TubeBuddy (before joining Uscreen), I spoke with a lot of YouTube creators, especially those just starting out. And for many of them, the big milestone wasn’t their first product or their first customer.

It was getting into the YouTube Partner Program.

That moment felt like “I made it.”
And I get why. Earning from AdSense feels like validation.

But over time, I also saw how dangerous it can be when that becomes the goal, not the starting point.

Algorithms change.
Policies shift.
RPMs fluctuate.

And suddenly, a “good month” turns into a stressful one.

The most resilient creator businesses I see today are built on revenue streams they actually own. Digital IP, physical products, memberships, first party data, direct audience relationships.

So maybe the question isn’t whether 15% is the perfect number.

Maybe it’s this:

How much of a creator's income are they truly in control of?
