For the past decade, I've turned games into educational tools for over 50M students.

It's my mission to revolutionise education through the power of play. 

As the Founder and Head of Education at Shapescape, I lead a team dedicated to creating immersive, game-based learning experiences through established games such as Minecraft.

Our results:

→ Reached over 50 million students with our educational content.
→ Partnered with Microsoft, NASA, BBC Studios, John Deere, EY, and government education departments worldwide.
→ Created cutting-edge worlds and tools used in classrooms globally.

From building dirt huts in Minecraft as a teenager to leading global educational projects, I've always had a passion for creative solutions and a love for games. Founding Shapescape turned this passion into a mission to inspire students and support educators around the world.

2025 was the hardest year of my life.

Exactly one year ago, I lost my partner after a long illness. I became a single parent to a young daughter. I had to figure out how to restart a life.

At the same time, Shapescape went through its biggest transition ever. Our education studio in Ghent had to find its feet as an independent unit. The pressure I put myself under was immense.

But somehow, work continued.

We released Peter is Here with the Vatican, a project about cultural heritage, history and AI literacy. We shipped a major math update to Dexi Ville for Prinsparets Stiftelse. And we launched Ocean Heroes with UNESCO Ocean  and Voice of the Ocean Foundation, which has now reached over 1.5 million downloads.

These partners were extraordinary. They were patient, understanding, and collaborative during a period when I struggled to give my best. I'm grateful for that grace.

I don't have neat conclusions about 2025. I'm still figuring a lot of things out. But I'm here and I want to be more present than ever.

Here's to 2026. Whatever it brings.

Where to begin with my Bett Global recap...

After 3 days filled with conversations, the ones that stand out the most to me are those with the Minecraft Education team and all of the Ambassadors. People with a real passion for game-based learning who speak from the heart and tonnes of hands-on classroom experience.

While I love talking to new educators and  head teachers on all of the benefits of Minecraft Education, I spent this year's BETT as an opportunity to connect more deeply with all of these amazing folks that form the foundations of the community.

Every one of them with a specific passion project or backstory that is unique and brought them to Minecraft.
Ellie Finch's amazing work in using Minecraft as a tool in therapy. I even had a mini therapy session with her on the show floor. Thank you for that 💚
Michael Barrett's teacher training programs and passion for e-sports. He helped me better understand the value of Minecraft as an accessible e-sports platform.
Dan Noble as the guy who went from working in IT to being an amazing creative powerhouse, making beautifully detailed experiences in Minecraft Education.

The energy around Minecraft Education is through the roof!

It's my third year at Bett Global, but this year, the attention for game-based learning feels different.

Educators are more convinced than ever that educational games are a great way to keep their classroom engaged. The growing library of content in Minecraft Education tackles all of the complex and abstract topics students may struggle with. Shapescape consistently releases more of these engaging educational experiences in the catalog.

Looking forward to chatting with lots of educators, school administrators, and anyone who wants to learn more about Minecraft Education and what Shapescape does with the platform.

Every year, it's such a valuable experience to hear the passion of educators who are already using games in their classrooms. I walk away with new motivation and inspiration every single time.

I'm also looking forward to connecting and catching up with collaborators on many of our projects from the past years.

Events like these are crucial for me to maintain my drive, but at the same time, they are incredibly energy draining. Maintaining a more consistent energy level throughout all three days is going to be a big focus for me this year. 

However, it's equally likely I will be overwhelmed by all the amazing things on show and the passionate people at the booths, and I will crash after the first two days 😅 (check up on me on Friday, please 😂 )

UN Ocean Decade UNESCO Ocean UNESCO/IOC Project Office for IODE

Great to see CoastCraft getting attention from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

This project created by the UK Environment Agency, Cornwall Council, and BlockBuilders teaches coastal erosion and climate adaptation through play. 

Players make decisions about infrastructure, budgets, and nature-based solutions to protect their town from rising sea levels.

What makes it effective is that it's visual and immediate. You see the consequences of your choices play out over decades. This kind of learning isn't just for kids. Adults struggle with these concepts too. When you can see the impact of your decisions in a simulated 2040 or 2060, your actions of today feel rewarded.

It's exciting to see more projects like this. Game-based learning for climate education is growing, and work like CoastCraft shows why. It makes complex topics tangible and engaging in ways traditional methods can't.

🎮 This computer game is helping children understand climate risks – and what can be done to manage them.

🌊 The new CoastCraft world in Minecraft Education is teaching students about coastal erosion, flood resilience and climate adaptation using hands-on learning through play.

Set in a seaside town in Cornwall, UK, the game challenges players to protect the coast from rising sea levels and extreme weather, making tough choices about infrastructure, budgets, and nature-based solutions.

🏖️ Developed by the UK Environment Agency and Cornwall Council as part of a flood and coastal erosion innovation programme, CoastCraft goes beyond abstract scientific models – it lets players experience the real trade-offs of climate adaptation.

💡 By fast-forwarding to 2040 or 2060, students can see the long-term effects of their decisions – a powerful way to connect the dots between today’s choices and tomorrow’s risks.

Elsewhere, teachers are already using similar games – such as UNDRR's Stop Disasters! – to help children learn how to survive floods, earthquakes and tsunamis.

📚 Disaster risk education at a young age empowers future generations to understand risk, make informed choices, and build resilience long before crisis strikes.
