Superconductors are special materials that conduct electricity with zero resistance when cooled below a certain temperature. 

This means no energy is lost as heat, unlike normal wires.

💡 High-Temperature Superconductors (HTS): These materials work at relatively higher temperatures (around –140 °C). 

They are not “room temperature,” but easier to cool compared to older superconductors.

One startup, Hinetics  is pioneering a breakthrough in this field. 

Instead of using complex cryogenic cooling systems (pumps, pipes, seals, fluid circulation), they have designed a spinning cryocooler.

👉 Cryocooler = A compact refrigeration device that keeps superconductors cold.

👉 Conduction cooling = Heat is transferred directly through solid materials (like copper) instead of circulating fluids.

👉 Power-to-weight ratio = How much power a motor produces relative to its weight. 

Higher ratios mean lighter, more powerful motors – critical for aircraft.

Hinetics’ prototype superconducting motor operates at 5–10 megawatts. 

That’s enough power to fly a regional passenger airliner. 

Even more exciting, their motor achieves up to 99.5% efficiency and a specific power of 10 kW/kg. 

Future versions may reach 40 kW/kg, making them among the lightest and most powerful motors in the world. 🚀

🌊 Potential applications go beyond aircraft – into ships and other high-torque systems. 

With less weight, higher efficiency, and reduced energy losses, superconducting motors may redefine electric propulsion.

🔍 What’s inside a motor?

Every motor has two key parts:

Rotor: the part that spins.

Stator: the fixed part that produces the magnetic field.

Traditional stators are made of iron, which is heavy and limits efficiency.

In fact, iron makes up about two-thirds of motor weight!

Now imagine replacing that iron with a Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

A PCB is a thin, layered board with copper traces — commonly used in electronics.

🌀 Axial-Flux Motor — A smarter design

In an axial-flux motor, the rotor and stator are flat and parallel —
like two disks facing each other.

This design allows higher torque density (more torque per volume)
and better cooling due to its thin profile.

Add a PCB stator, and you get:
 ✅ 50–65% lighter weight
 ✅ 25% lower carbon emissions
 ✅ Half the size and noise of conventional motors

💡 Why it matters

The air-core design (no iron core) reduces energy losses.

In a normal motor, iron causes eddy current losses — unwanted heating and vibration.

The PCB motor avoids this, giving smoother torque and less noise (about 5 dB lower).

It also allows two rotors on each side of the stator, creating a strong and consistent magnetic flux — the invisible field that actually spins the motor.

🧩 Smarter electronics inside

Each PCB layer carries one electrical phase. (A phase is a timed sinusoidal current wave used to create rotation.)

This prevents short circuits and improves reliability.

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) — made with high-efficiency silicon carbide MOSFETs — controls motor speed and torque precisely.

It even allows cloud monitoring and software updates 🌐.

🌍 Real-world applications

Infinitum Electric’s PCB axial-flux motors are now used in:
HVAC and ventilation systems 🏢
Manufacturing and industrial drives 🏭
Electric vehicles and hybrid systems 🚘
Even electric aviation ✈️

Oil-cooled versions reach 8–12 kW/kg power density,

we could cut 860 million tonnes of CO₂ annually —

UK-based YASA has redefined electric motor innovation.

Their latest axial flux motor delivers 750 kW (1018 HP) while weighing just 12.7 kg. 

That’s a record energy density of 59 kW/kg — a benchmark in electric propulsion. 💪

🧲 But what exactly is an axial flux motor? 🤔

In simple terms, it’s an electric motor where the magnetic flux flows parallel to the rotation axis. ⚡

This is different from radial flux motors, where the flux flows outward from the center. 🔄

🔍 Why does this matter?

Because torque (rotational force) increases faster with diameter in axial flux designs. 

More diameter = more torque = more efficiency.

YASA’s breakthrough lies in its Yokeless and Segmented Armature (YASA) design — removing the heavy stator yoke reduces iron mass by 80%, boosting range by up to 10%. 🔋

The rotor spins alongside the stator, not inside it, increasing radius and therefore torque.

 Petrol dominates two-wheelers.
 Diesel dominates big vehicles.
 CNG is strong in autos and buses.

Pollution load means emissions impact.
 EVs cut this load a lot.

🔋 Why EVs lag?
 EV TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is still high.
 Battery cost is the key driver.
 Charging time adds user stress.
 Grid power quality also matters.

⛽️ CNG adoption stays strong.
 This is due to low running cost.
 Also easy refuelling.
 This slows EV growth.

Key technical insight
 EV shift is not linear.
 It needs a charging infrastructure.
 It needs battery price drops.
 It needs efficient motors and drives.
 It needs recycling systems ♻️.

Way forward
 We must push clean fleets.
 We must boost public transport.
 We must raise the local EV supply.

 But the base is still fossil-heavy.

My thoughts:

reduce cost and improve safety for mass EV adoption.

🎯 High-efficiency motor technologies will boost range, 
performance, and overall system efficiency.

🎯  ‘Design for recycling’ principles will enable sustainable 
material recovery and lower long-term lifecycle costs.

 This creates both risk and opportunity.

A major fire hit a Kota EV showroom yesterday. 

More than 50 electric two-wheelers were destroyed. 

Officials said the cause was a short circuit ⚡.

⚡️ Short circuits generally happen in EV environments because of 

👉 Poor wiring quality
👉 Overloaded circuits
👉 High humidity in closed spaces
👉 Improper earthing

Short circuit → High current → Heat spikes → Nearby plastics catch fire → Fire spreads to battery shell

Incidents like this show how vulnerable EVs are to external failures, not just internal battery issues. 

It is important that EVs stay free from such risks and remain safe from fire hazards. 

Let us break down how we can reduce this risk below. 👇 

🔧 In my view, EV design and infrastructure safety can improve through the following focused measures:

🎯 Infrastructure & Storage Safety (Earlier Points):

1️⃣ Strong wiring and routine electrical audits.

2️⃣ Fire-rated storage for EVs in closed spaces.

3️⃣ Better thermal monitoring inside showrooms.

🎯 Electric Vehicle Design Safety Enhancements (New Points):

4️⃣ Advanced Battery Isolation Systems that cut power instantly during faults.

5️⃣ Cell-Level Thermal Barriers to stop heat transfer between cells.

6️⃣ High-IP Waterproofing and Dust Protection to prevent moisture-led short circuits.

7️⃣ Multi-Sensor Early Warning Systems using temperature, gas, and current sensors.

8️⃣ Fail-Safe Venting Architecture to release internal pressure safely.

⚡ Events like this remind us to innovate faster. 

🔧 Safety is a continuous process. With the right engineering focus, EVs will only get safer from here.

This will make EVs unstoppable.

Autonomous vehicles can bring change in controlled environments like campuses, airports, and mining zones — where safety and efficiency matter most. 

But India must still solve challenges like HD mapping, cybersecurity, and sensor performance in dust and rain before this tech becomes mainstream.

As an engineer, I see autonomy as the next evolution of electric vehicles — intelligent machines powered by AI and clean energy.
