Be the leader your team feels safe around.

Especially when things get heavy.

A lot of leaders expect their team to manage stress by themselves.

In doing so, they forget to ask an important question:
What is causing the stress in the first place?

When I founded Skinmed, it was important to me to take care of my team.

I might not have been able to help in their personal lives, 
but I knew I could make work a place where they felt supported.

Whenever someone shows signs of burnout, it's rarely just one bad week.

It's often a sign of something deeper.

→ Unrealistic expectations
→ No time to recover
→ Lack of clarity
→ Poor boundaries

As a leader, if you see those patterns it's your job to step in.

Otherwise, people shut down, stop asking for help, and push through until they can't anymore.

A small way to open the conversation is to say,
"I've noticed that things have been hard lately, is there any way I can help?"

That one question can bring people out of their shell,
and allow you to focus on helping them get back on track.

Sometimes it means adjusting workloads.

Or it might be helping someone regain their confidence.

Whatever the case, what matters is that you get to the root of the problem and prevent stress from becoming the norm.

The work you love is out there.

Be bold enough to pursue it.

When I was learning about longevity,
I realised there was a key component to people living longer, happier lives.

They decided to follow their passion.

It might be professional, like reaching a high career point.
Or it might be personal, like publishing a book.

What mattered was that even if the work was hard,
they were motivated to keep going because of their passion.

But a lot of people remain stuck in work that doesn't fulfil them.

That leads to more stress and a lack of fulfilment.

Stress isn't always about the workload.
Sometimes it's a sign that you're doing the wrong work.

If you're:

→ Waking up in the morning feeling drained.
→ Doing tasks that feel meaningless.
→ Achieving goals but having no fulfilment.

It's time to think about making a change. 

You don't have to quit everything.
You can start small:

→ Recognise the work that excites you.
→ Build one skill that brings you closer to your goal.
→ Talk to someone who's already where you want to be for advice.

The journey towards doing work you love isn't easy,
but it will always be worth it.

That meant creating a culture where they felt invested in.

When you're in charge, it's your job to keep people:

↳ The team knows the end goal and how to get there.

→ Instead of micromanaging, I trust that the right people are in the right roles.

I believe that everyone has a purpose in life,
whether it's to build a business or to write a book.

If you have a dream, you should try to achieve it.

Many people want to, but distractions often pull them away from their dreams.
Months can pass and their goal is still out of reach.

That's why protecting your focus is important.

You don't achieve your goals by doing everything in one day.
You reach them by developing the right mindset.

Here are 7 reminders to help you:

1. Pain is the price of entry.
↳ Working towards your goals will sting at first.
↳ Avoiding the pain costs more in the long run. Just get started.

2. Focus is your sharpest weapon.
↳ It allows you to achieve your dreams.
↳ Remove distractions every time you want to work on your dreams.

3. Discipline > Motivation.
↳ Motivation will come and go.
↳ Discipline is dependable. Build it into your routine.

4. Train when no one's watching.
↳ The most personal growth happens when no one cheers for you.
↳ Keep track of your progress to remind yourself how far you've come.

5. Master yourself first.
↳ Your emotions, health and lifestyle can affect your progress. 
↳ Sleep well, eat well and notice emotional triggers. 

6. Think long-term. Act daily.
↳ Daily actions lead to long-term results.
↳ You can miss a day, but don't miss two in a row.

7. Stay sharp in times of peace.
↳ People tend to falter when they're comfortable.
↳ Keep developing yourself even when things feel easy.

Building the right mindset allows you to achieve your dreams.

When you protect it, you can achieve whatever goal you have.

The Samurai Mindset

You can hire a team of high performers.

They still need learn how to work together.

Thank you Richard Harpin for this great advice.

Taking care of your team is one of the most important parts of leadership.

When people feel happy and cared, they want to improve themselves and do their best work.

We try our best to look after everyone at Skinmed,
and that's resulted in a 2% turnover rate (well under the average 8%).

Achieving the same results starts with having a few tools under your belt.
Here are some you can use:

1. Start With Why (Simon Sinek)
↳ Give your team a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

What → The product or service you provide.
How → What makes you different.
Why → Your shared purpose.

2. The 70-20-10 Rule (McCall, Lombardo & Eichinger)
↳ Makes sure your team has constant learning opportunities.

Learning comes from...
70% from challenging experiences.
20% from mentoring.
10% from formal learning.

3. The Trust Triangle (Frances Frei, Harvard)
↳ Builds trust, which is the foundation for any high-performing team.

In your leadership, you need:
Authenticity → Always be genuine.
Logic → Make sure decisions make sense.
Empathy → Show your team that you care.

4. The 5 Stages of Team Development (Tuckman Model)
↳ Each one is important to build a team that works well together.

Forming → The team comes together.
Storming → Conflicts arise.
Norming → People set the ground rules
Performing → Results start to come in.
Adjourning → The project ends or evolves.

5. The Johari Window (Luft & Ingham)
↳ Helps provide real feedback and builds confidence in team members.

Map information based on this grid:
Open → Everyone knows.
Blind spot → You know something, but your team doesn't.
Hidden → Your team knows something, but you don't.
Unknown → No one knows this (yet).

6. The Energy/Impact Matrix (Inspired by McKinsey)
↳ Notice where team members are excelling and falling behind.

Map every team member's impact vs energy:
High Impact + High Energy = Keep & Promote.
Low Impact + Low Energy = Consider exit.
Coach or upskill those in-between.

7. The RAPID Decision-Making Model (Bain & Company)
↳ Helps the team make fast, clear decisions.

Recommend → Suggest a course of action.
Agree → Assign who signs off on tasks.
Perform → Assign who executes tasks.
Input → Add in relevant facts or opinions.
Decide → Who gets the final say?

Building a great team is about taking care of them as best as you can.

When you invest in their growth, they do their best work in return.

If you're reading this, you still have time.

The clock hasn't run out yet.

One of the most dangerous thoughts someone could have is,
"It's too late for me to start."

Everyone has that thought at some point in their life,
whether they're in their 20s, 50s, or even 60s.

But they're forgetting one important thing:
They're still alive.

Every moment you have is an opportunity to pursue your dream.

And it doesn't matter if it's bad at first, or if there are obstacles to overcome.
What matters is that you start.

Here are some reminders if you still feel like it's "too late":

You can start getting stronger today
↳ You don't need to start going to the gym 24/7. Start with 5 minutes of walking or stretching.

You can reset your health at any age
↳ Focus on one small health habit and stick to it. Those simple actions add up.

You can build more meaningful relationships
↳ Spend time with people you love most. Reach out to someone you haven't talked to in a while.

Personal growth never stops
↳ Identify one area where you want to grow. Set aside time for it for 30 days and just try.

There's always time for your dreams
↳ If there's a dream you have, write the smallest step you can take to make it a reality.

No matter how old you are, if you're breathing you can reimagine your future.

Every step forward counts.
