There was a clear theme emerging at the Big Data and Analytics West Summit, and it showed up in the breakfast discussions, the keynote, presentations and every conversation. 👇

Reliable AI still comes down to one thing: the strength of your enterprise data foundation.

At the IBM breakfast, several roundtable discussions pointed to the same realization. As teams accelerate toward AI, the real bottleneck isn’t tooling. It is the clarity, quality, and accessibility of the data behind it.

Paul Zikopoulos, VP Technology Sales at IBM, reinforced this in his keynote. He talked about the curiosity tax that comes from gated or fragmented data, and how governance, lineage, sovereignty, and explainability aren’t administrative tasks. They are accelerators for AI.
When organizations know where data came from, how it can be used, and who owns it, the entire AI lifecycle becomes more reliable.

One point he shared stood out to me: GenAI is fundamentally an unstructured data problem. Most organizations haven’t even started unlocking the value in documents, PDFs, forms, logs, images, and everything that never makes it into a warehouse.

During my conversation with Paul, he also highlighted how leaders can start simply. Focus on automation and internal optimization use cases. Decide whether each AI initiative is meant to save money or generate money. Build from there.

Across the day, the message was consistent throughout peer discussions, panels, and other presentations. Data foundations are the reason AI works and we need to invest in getting those right. Governance, security, quality, stewardship and so much more... they all need to be in place.

Here is the interesting part…
Unstructured data is everywhere in our organizations:
- Images
- Screenshots
- Videos
- PDFs
- Logs
- Messages

All of them packed with value
But without metadata, that value stays hidden.

Metadata tells us:
- Who created the content
- When it was captured
- What it represents
- How it should be used
- Where it fits in our ecosystem

Suddenly an image is not just an image.
It becomes
- Searchable
- Discoverable
- Reliable

This is why unstructured data is such a huge opportunity.
The insights are already there.
Metadata is what turns those insights into something we can trust and act on.

On expedition from June through early Sept, running environment & community projects with volunteer teams. Just completed 3 projects, all involved developing leadership skills for the volunteers, developing their confidence & guiding them to explore their natural leadership qualities better. 

These young would-be leaders experience why it's essential to have a truly supportive & motivated team. As volunteer managers we use a personal development framework to help individuals make a direct personal connection, learn specific leadership skills, and at the same time be authentic as people. The immersive experience is a great way to soften attitudes and biases, enabling real learning come naturally. 

As project managers responsible for project delivery through the team we also have the opportunity to use the leadership toolkit to develop our own awareness & learn, support each other.

Result - a huge motivational shift as people develop skills & confidence, leading to all project goals done ahead of time. In a couple of cases we were so productive we ran out of materials.

Project Manager

This team experience comprised two goals

1. Run a community centre upgrade with a team of youth volunteers, to ensure three objectives
 * a great result for the village community
 * an excellent Raleigh project delivery
 * personal development for the volunteers

 Result - a big win for the Kampong Liu community who now have a brand new public toilet,
 a secure & covered rainwater supply, and an upgraded community centre.

2. Complete a 1-week adventure challenge as a volunteer team manager, with the goals of
 a) completing all challenges successfully
 b) winning the competition
 c) personal growth for team members

 Result - our Zulu team came 2nd overall, very close in points & won many team challenges.

Excellent stretch experience on several grounds – learning how Raleigh does field operations, engaging with the community for shared goals, achieving a visible result with a young & learning team, and helping each other push well beyond the usual comfort zones to knock off one challenge after another.

Volunteer Project Manager

Establish a new Service Management practice for ViFX that delivers the IT transformation business needs to improve operational efficiency. IT must become a way to expand business capability. IT service management is many things, but first must deliver operational efficiency to enable business to optimise IT performance and focus on innovation.

In August 2012 after several months careful evaluation, we made a major commitment to Cherwell Service Manager as the primary ITSM platform for our business. Shortly afterwards, Cherwell appeared in Gartner's revised ITSSM magic quadrant for the first time, and straight at 3rd place. A heavyweight challenger indeed. We picked the same attributes - a true cloud-aware ITSM platform with a reputation for good deployment, and that supports multiple device access, flexible licensing and a host of smart usability features.

General Manager - Service Management

A long rewarding business IT career, now semi-retired and committed to environmental and climate action, working with established advocacy groups such as The Climate Reality Project, and others.  

A current project - rewriting Hanon. Well not rewriting - Hanon is too useful to replace - so much as augmenting for contemporary sounds and rhythms. Up to 8 basic exercises, when I have 10 I'll put on my Youtube channel. As well as modern riff-like patterns there'll be syncopation & rhythmic variations more relevant for today's keyboard technique.
