Why 2019 SEO Strategies Don’t Work in 2026

When ChatGPT launched in 2022, most SEOs called it a threat to Google.

We called it a signal.

Buyers were already searching on YouTube, Reddit, Amazon, and forums long before AI tools existed. 

ChatGPT didn't change the behavior. It confirmed it.

So I came up with PlatformLeverage back then, a service focuse don helping brands work on cross-platform visibility before it became the cool thing to do.

Today, Rand Fishkin published a fascinating research showing 26% of desktop searches happen outside Google across 41 platforms. 

Amazon, YouTube, and Bing each get more search activity than ChatGPT. 
Social and commerce platforms combined account for more than AI tools do.

Nobody's surprised by this if they've been watching actual buyer behavior.

Instead of continuing with PlatformLeverage, we've adopted the Search Everywhere terminology, as it clearly expresses the search focus blended with the cross-platform angle. 

The name changed. The idea didn't.

Your buyers don't research on one platform. 
They never did. 

The difference now is that the data is catching up to what we were already seeing in client pipelines 2 years ago.

This doesn't only mean a huge win for Claude's distribution into B2B,
but also that OpenAI might not likely have anything coming close to Cowork in the near future.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella just unveiled Copilot Cowork - an autonomous agent that can plan and execute multi-step work across Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and your entire Microsoft 365 stack.

You give it intent: “Prepare me for the Q2 review with Acme.”

It builds the plan.
Pulls the data.
Writes the deck.
Schedules prep time.
Drafts the emails.

And runs the workflow in the background.

The agentic orchestration layer powering it comes from Claude Cowork, Anthropic’s technology.

That makes this one of the biggest enterprise wins the $380 billion AI lab has landed so far 🤯

It could change the enterprise AI game significantly thanks to:

↳ Massive distribution

Microsoft 365 has hundreds of millions of seats. Copilot already has 15M+ paid users and 90% of the Fortune 500.

↳ Enterprise trust unlocked

Claude’s agentic tech is now wrapped in Microsoft’s security stack: Purview, Entra, audit logs, and compliance.

↳ Strategic signal

Microsoft’s deepest AI partner is OpenAI (it has 27% stake).
Yet the system executing long-horizon work plans now runs Anthropic’s stack.

↳ A learning flywheel

Every enterprise workflow running inside Copilot now trains Claude on real office work.
This alone could be a huge unlock for real-world workflows.

My takeaway is this:

The biggest shift we’re witnessing now is not about better chatbots or the latest LLMs.

It’s all about software that plans and executes knowledge work while you watch the progress bar 🤖

Anthropic built the AI agent that made Microsoft nervous.

So Microsoft turned around and shipped it to the corporate world.

Now the operating system of global office work runs on Claude AI.

The board wasn't wrong to ask the question.

A SaaS founder came to us after their Series A. Investors had flagged paid dependency in the data room. CAC was climbing, the paid channel was working but getting more expensive every quarter, and no one could point to an organic engine that would hold up under scrutiny. 

They'd tried SEO once. Got blog traffic. Zero demos.

We didn't start with content.

We mapped where their buyers actually shortlisted vendors before booking a call based on self attribution. 

Turned out two specific Reddit communities and Perplexity were where the real decisions happened. 

Their competitors showed up in both. They didn't show up in either.

Six months in, their call booking form tells a different story. Discovery sources now include Perplexity, the two Reddit threads, and a specific obstacle people worried about before buying, where the brand now shows up in ChatGPT.

If your paid CAC is climbing and your organic channel isn't compounding results, that's the gap worth closing before your next board review.

The funnel wasn't broken.

“5% of our closed-won deals come from LLMs.”

Wrong.

5% of your currently attributable deals come from LLMs. The real number is far more likely to be in the 30–60% range.

Why?

You’re probably looking at referral traffic to infer attribution. Instead, you should allow users to self-attribute.

Add a prompt to your lead form that asks: “How did you hear about us?”

This will better capture sources from people who Googled you after using an LLM or typed your brand name directly.

For Siege, 5% of our traffic comes from LLMs.

The actual number attributable to LLMs via self-attribution? 50%!

10× the default assumption for many.

There are hundreds of SEOs struggling to show the value of their work as clicks decline. This is one path to fixing that.

If conversion rate is a concern, make the field optional or place it post-conversion.

Neither is perfect, but both are far more helpful than relying solely on referral traffic to justify GEO work to executives.
