You Are Your Voice

You Are Your Voice focuses on taking healthy voices to their optimal performance level.  Kay says "Your voice makes a powerful first impression, and is an important part of maintaining the interest of your audience, whether that is staff, students, audiences of one or 1,000.  I make sure your vocal image matches who you really are."

Through customized, interactive workshops and individual sessions drawing from speech science, best practice training regimens, and  performing arts techniques, Kay Meyer's clients develop the skill sets and self-esteem to share their voice with the world.
 
You Are Your Voice frequently receives referrals from corporate Human Resources Departments seeking Executive Training and Foreign Accent Modification Training for their important international team members. 

Clients may be referred by their medical team (otolaryngologists--ENTs, neurologists, psychologists and therapists) to take their speaking and voice "to the next level" following their return to health.  A number of clients have experienced vocal nodules, chronic hoarseness, inappropriate pitch (too high or too low for their body size and gender), tremors, laryngitis and vocal fatigue.

Kay serves selected public and private schools as a Speech-Language Pathologist or consultant each year.  Her expertise in working with adolescents and young adults ensures that student goals will be focused on a successful transition to work, technical school, or college.

Kay enjoys mentoring young people to consider a career as Speech-Language Pathologists and researchers.

Kay B. Meyer, MA,CCC-SLP---Lake County Illinois

During this period, Kay specialized in assisting older children and adolescents in transitions to new schools, college, and the workforce.  She developed a broad base of experience in the Lake County (IL) Public Schools (including Waukegan, Round Lake, Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL) schools,  Winthrop Harbor School District #1 (sole SLP for preschool-8th grade) and Warren Township High School in Gurnee.  

Highlights of Kay's tenure also included:

Presentation:  "Work Words" to the Annual Convention of the Council on Exceptional Children. 

She also maintained a private practice summer program for children, and provided short-term home health and nursing home therapy and diagnostics.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Kay B. Meyer, MA-CCC-SLP, Bolingbrook, IL

While in this Bolingbrook, Illinois-based private practice, Kay treated children and adults with voice disorders, autism, stuttering, learning disabilities, developmental delays, and neurological diagnoses including Post-Polio Syndrome and Spasmodic Dysphonia. She also served as an independent contractor to rehabilitation centers and home health organizations.

Northwestern University Medical School

The treatment and rehabilitation of Voice Disorders, a specialized niche of Speech-Language pathology became a specialty for Mrs. Meyer while on staff at Northwestern Medical School.  Loss of an expressive and reliable voice can be devastating for people who rely on their voice to make a living, or whose vocal cords and related structures do not function well.  Kay completed her fellowship with a strong conviction that EVERYONE must have a VOICE, whether they must go through therapy and rehabilitation, or study with a specially-trained SLP/Voice Coach to deliver their unique message to the world.
    
The majority of outpatient voice patients in our two NU Medical School Clinics were people in radio broadcasting, professional theater, opera students, open-outcry traders, and teachers.  Attorneys, members of the clergy, athletic coaches, and both professional and passionate amateur singers also benefited from Voice Therapy.   The SLP team helped the medical team in defining and diagnosing voice disorders.  When the SLP observed vocal tremor, spasmodic dysphonia, or difficulty attaining proper voice characteristics for age or gender, we  worked closely with Neurologists and Ear-Nose-Throat  Doctors.  Post-surgical patients came to our clinic for specific exercises and counsel when radical cancer surgery or traumatic accident resulted in the loss of oral structures.  Not unexpectedly, medical residents received moral support and bedside communication skills for the times they must deliver difficult news.

Kay B. Meyer, MA,CCC-SLP  began her career on staff at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL.  Over the next 25 years, she treated speech and language problems of over 900 youth in public schools and maintained her own private practice.  Her knowledge of vocal cord disorders attracted clients who depend on their voice to make their living (actors from Chicago theatres, public figures, radio personalities, clergy, teachers, and international business people.)

 In 2007, Kay launched You Are Your Voice to increase her outreach as an inspirational speaker, and communication trainer.

 Kay instills her clients with skills they will need to “think on their feet” and to speak with confidence and clarity as they enter new living and work communities, higher education, and beyond. Imagine the positive interactions you can experience with a clear voice, accurate pronunciation, and a message that are easily heard and understood as you share in meetings, step up to lead a team, present to a live audience, or create a video!

Having a "trained ear" after more than 25 years puts Kay in a unique position to listen, categorize and diagnose communication problems in as few as 1-2 sessions.  She is quick to identify the need to collaborate with other resource professionals (image coaches, etiquette instructors, accent trainers, speech writers, et al ) and provide early referral for medical intervention and treatment when movement difficulty and vocal quality are picked up on in her screening.
