We use quality ingredients from companies known for their ethical treatment of animals and a commitment to sustainability, like Ghirardelli & Bob's Red Mill.

I'm also a board member and investor in Rumpl, Built Oregon, evo, DUST Moto, Tender Loving Empire, Fast Penny, and MiiR. These organizations share my passion for product, the outdoors, and values rooted in social and environmental responsibility.

Prior to Revant, I founded, scaled, and sold the eyewear brand Shady Peeps (2010 to 2015), which held licensing agreements with over 80 universities, the MLS, and the NBA. That experience gave me a deep understanding of brand building and what it takes to grow and exit a consumer business.

This morning I had the honor of standing shoulder to shoulder with Senator Ron Wyden and leaders from some of my favorite Oregon brands, including BENCHMADE, Portland Coffee Roasters, and Hood River Distillers, Inc, to talk about the impact tariffs have had on manufacturers like REVANT OPTICS .

For more than nine years, Revant has invested in manufacturing the highest quality sunglasses lenses right here in downtown Portland. I believe making product where you live and work is the backbone of thriving communities. It creates skilled, high paying jobs, strengthens families, and builds pride in what we export to the world - we’ve shipped over 3 million pairs of lenses and sunglasses to 120 countries. When you own the process from design through production, innovation accelerates, quality improves, and accountability increases.

The past year has been deeply disruptive. Tariff rates on the machines and materials we have to import because they aren’t available in the US, changed nearly ten times, spiking to more than 130%.  Independent studies (check out We Pay the Tariffs) confirm what we know, these costs ultimately fall on American businesses and consumers. In 2025 alone, Revant paid roughly an additional $600,000 in unexpected tariffs. That money would have gone toward hiring, investing in equipment, and expanding our manufacturing capacity.

Beyond the financial hit, the uncertainty forced us to constantly rework budgets, delay purchasing, and rethink sourcing. Instead of focusing purely on growth, we had to operate defensively just to stay financially healthy. Unpredictability makes it difficult to invest with confidence.

Now that the Supreme Court has deemed the tariff structure unconstitutional, my hope is that those funds are returned so we can reinvest into jobs, equipment, and our community. If we truly want to rebuild manufacturing in this country, we need collaboration, transparency, clear timelines, and defined measures of success in trade policy. We also need a much more comprehensive approach with investments in education, workforce development, and equipment so manufacturers who are already doing the work can keep building.

I am grateful to Senator Wyden for engaging local manufacturers and creating space for this conversation. Portland continues to be a hub for makers, builders, and innovators. If we stay focused and work together, we can keep building something meaningful here. 💪

What started in my apartment in Eugene, Oregon listing lenses on eBay with a $300 Dell laptop has grown into something pretty special.

Today, REVANT OPTICS is consistently one of the fastest growing e-commerce brands online because we’ve stayed relentlessly focused on the customer experience for 15 years. That focus has led to over 3,000,000 pairs of lenses and sunglasses sold in more than 100 countries.

One lesson along the way is that growth compounds when operators share what they’re learning.

That’s why we’re hosting an Operators Teaching Operators night at Revant Optics HQ on Thursday, February 26 from 4:30 to 7 PM. An in-person evening of real conversations and working sessions with some of the most talented e-commerce operators in the country.

We’ll kick things off with the Revant story, from a late-night idea to a global eyewear and lens brand, then break into operator led discussions, including AI for e-commerce led by Roy Steves of Poolaroo. Expect practical takeaways, light food and drinks, and a few giveaways.

I don’t often post about industry news, but this one is worth highlighting.

A fellow Portlander and a strong advocate for independent eyecare labs and patient-first vision care, Brandon Butler has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the The Vision Council.

For those outside the optical world, The Vision Council is the largest trade organization dedicated to the eyewear and vision care industry in the United States. It represents more than 3,000 manufacturers, suppliers, and optical labs, and helps drive research, policy advocacy, and industry collaboration across the entire vision care ecosystem. Their events, especially Vision Expo, have been some of the most valuable forums in the industry for building relationships, learning how the market is evolving, and connecting with suppliers and innovators. Many of my most important mentors and partnerships in this space came from those gatherings. Turns out optometrists know how to throw a pretty good party, too. 🥂 

Brandon and I first met when he was launching Pacific Artisan Labs. I was inspired by his passion for manufacturing, his deep knowledge of the optical industry, and the way his team talked about working with him. 

At a time when much of the industry is consolidating under a handful of massive global conglomerates, Brandon is taking the harder road by building a network of independent optical labs in the United States with the goal of delivering faster service, stronger partnerships with practices, and ultimately better outcomes for patients. That kind of leadership matters. It also feels very Portland - mission-driven, craftsmanship-focused, and willing to do the difficult work of building something meaningful.

Congratulations, Brandon! I’m excited to see the impact you’ll make in this role and what it means for the future of independent labs and the broader optical industry.
