I have been a Video-gamer for 43 years of my life, and one thing that is most obvious - Life can often feel like a battlefield or intense adventure that you did not expect to be thrust into

Shao Kahn is the primary antagonist in Mortal Kombat. He rules through domination and fear, operating on a single belief that strength equals worth, context is irrelevant and history earns no protection. Any sign of decline is treated as weakness, and weakness is punished. That worldview is exactly why Shao Kahn ultimately fails.

By refusing to account for limits, fatigue, aging, or loyalty, his leadership system discards experienced warriors the moment they falter, relies on intimidation rather than adaptation, and mistakes short-term dominance for long-term stability. In the end, his empire collapses not because he lacked power — but because he lacked judgment. As a result he loses many of his trusted warriors such as...

Now many of you won't know these characters, and that's ok, but the relevance of this all is that many organisations are unintentionally repeating this same mistake.

When male employees hit #midlife, some experience #andropause like me. In workplaces with no awareness of this biology, performance slowdowns are often overlooked without curiosity or concern. Instead, they’re framed as disengagement, loss of edge, or motivation problems, and handled through the good old disciplinary route - warnings dished out without any though or consideration for the bigger picture....

...That is Shao Kahn logic in a corporate setting: outcomes without context, and leaders who epitomise this (not intentionally of course)jump straight to disciplinary proceedings without considering men also have hormonal shifts..

👉Misdiagnose their medical realities as behavioral issues

👉Push out experienced, high-context talent prematurely

👉Create cultures of fear rather than trust

👉Lose their best workers and create instability

👉tend to associate relentless pressure with effective leadership

#Menopause has rightfully gained more coverage, making it a legitimate workplace reality. Male hormonal aging, however, remains largely invisible, leaving many men to just keep quiet, tough it out and get on with it as many are conditioned to believe that 'hornones' are only a feminine related thing.

Shao Kahn is a tyrannical emporer in Mortal Kombat, but also a lesson about how NOT to lead. Organisations that refuse to adapt to human biology may look strong for a while, but like his empire, they eventually pay the price because...

It's easy to relate late comings to lack of committment, disengagement or poor attitude, but in truth It’s rarely any of those...

...Imagine a racing game where speed is rewarded — until the track suddenly changes - lanes split, hazards appear - going flat-out now increases the chance of crashing....that’s the game "Sonic Racing Crossworlds" which my partner got me for Christmas.

Early on in each race, it’s simple: straight tracks, clear rules, hit the boost and go,
then you pass through a half-coin portal — and suddenly you’re in a different world - new terrain, new risks, same race, very different conditions.

The driver didn’t choose to slow down, the environment changed, then the vehicle adapts - wheels may become a boat,
the boat may become an aircraft -
same racer, same destination, different mode....

POINT...

...Midlife, especially at times of #Andropause can often work the same way. 

Men don’t suddenly become less capable — they’re routed into more complex worlds such as greater responsibility, higher risk and more to lose. That heightened risk awareness shows up alot on the road: braking earlier, hesitating more, choosing safer lines, causing even your most reliable employees to inexplicably arrive later than usual.

I am especially finding this being 4 years Andropausal, where I become a little bit more anxious in the roads to the point where I can struggle to even start the car. I feel a heightened sense of cautiousness when I drive and roundabouts have become especially very daunting for me lately.

And here’s where organisations can really feel it - In Sonic Racing, a single disruption, a missed boost, a forced route change, doesn’t knock you out of the race, but it bumps you back a few positions. You’re still skilled, still competing, but momentum is lost.

That’s what misreading reliable employees does to organisations. Trust erodes, Managers spend time policing instead of leading and psychological safety drops, and this is how your experienced people will eitherfall back or even leave — not because they can’t perform, but because the system no longer fits the track they’re on.

From the outside, it looks like slowing down but in reality, it’s adaptation — misunderstood.

About 50% of your male employees could, like me, be going through Andropause. In this regard the leadership question needs to move from...

“Why are they late?” 

TO 

“Have we recognised that the track — and the vehicle required — has changed?”

In Video game "The Outer Worlds", there is a unique feature called 'Tactical Time Dilation.' With this feature, when things get intense, time slows down. You don’t stop moving — you see more clearly. You can aim at weak spots, make better decisions, and avoid costly mistakes.

The relevance  - men at work need their own 'Tactical Time Dilation' to thrive each day, rather than being constantly on the go.

A growing number of men in midlife — often in senior, high-responsibility roles — may be navigating #Andropause like I am, especially reduced energy, disrupted sleep, brain fog, increased stress sensitivity, or emotional volatility.

Many organisations in this crazy economy are cost-cutting and increasing individual productivity. As a result, many men find themselves unexpectedly with more work,
another project, another crisis, another expectation to “power through.” But performance under pressure doesn’t improve by accelerating productivity, it improves when people are given space to slow it down.

In The Outer Worlds if I don't slow time down i get overwhelmed by so many enemies and end up losing. Midlife male employees need that same slow down to prevent that very same overwhelm...

👉Cognitive load increases while recovery capacity decreases, 

👉Decision fatigue becomes more likely, not less

👉Stress compounds quietly until it shows up as burnout, disengagement, or sudden exit.

These are often your:

👉Most experienced leaders
👉Key institutional memory holders
👉Mentors others rely on

Losing them — or running them into the ground — is expensive.

So what does “Tactical Time Dilation” look like in your workplace?

👉Fewer concurrent priorities, clearer sequencing

👉Permission to focus deeply instead of constant firefighting

👉Reduced expectation of immediate responsiveness

👉Structured recovery time after high-intensity periods

👉Leadership cultures that reward judgment, not just stamina.

Just like in the game, slowing time allows people to:

💥Identify weak points earlier,

💥Make better calls under pressure,

💥Preserve energy for what actually matters.

HR leaders - you are uniquely positioned to normalise conversations about midlife transitions for men, in the same way organisations are beginning to do for #menopause.

This isn’t special treatment, it’s smart workforce design, because the goal isn’t to push experienced men harder until something breaks, it’s to help them aim better, last longer, and lead wiser.

Sometimes the most strategic move isn’t speed, It’s Tactical Time Dilation.

𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒍𝒆𝒇𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅.

One of my Christmas treats to myself was Call of Duty Black Ops 7. This felt different to other Call of Duty games because traditionally,  to play the story mode you had to select play in offline mode, where you would always have your squad with you and you could also Pause the game. However in this one you can only play online, you are fighting by yourself and you can't pause the game....

This made me think....

That’s how work now feels for many mid-life men who could be Andropausal.

Many of the HR leaders noticing this pattern are women — and they’re often the first to sense something is off before the data shows it.

Over the last decade, organisational structures have evolved:

👉Streamlining and cost cutting
👉Flatter hierarchies
👉Fewer people carrying more responsibility
👉AI accelerating pace and expectations

Whilst workforce have been massively streamlined, productivity expectations have shot up and support, slack, and recovery time have gone down.

Companies often celebrate this as “efficiency” — firms like Microsoft are a prime example, they publicly frame productivity gains through restructuring and AI adoption. From a balance-sheet view, it makes sense.

From a human view, especially for midlife staff, it can feel like solo play on hard mode, with no pause, and everything on the line. Add in the possibility that midlife men at work could be Andropausal — reduced stress tolerance, slower recovery, identity pressure — and what shows up isn’t vulnerability - it’s resentment.

Resentment is dangerous because it’s silent at first, then can eventually lead to absenteeism, and possibly even an exit - a hit to your bottom line profits from completely nowhere.

This isn’t about blaming organisations,
but many are sleepwalking into trouble by redesigning work around technology and cost, without redesigning it around humans, especially midlife workers who could be going through #Menopause or #Andropause. What happens here is pretty much the same thing as Black Ops 7 - a huge, uncontrollable wave of problems that you have to take on alone, and systems increasingly assume it’s sustainable.

The key risk isn’t resistance to change.
It’s disengagement, withdrawal, knowledge loss, and quiet cultural decay. If experienced people are becoming more cynical, defensive, or angry, the first question shouldn’t be:

“What’s wrong with them?”

It should be:

“What support, status, or margin for recovery did the system remove?”

Because when you remove the squad, remove the pause button, and increase the enemies, as in Black ops 7— you shouldn’t be surprised when even your best players struggle.

#Midlife Isn’t a Breakdown, It’s a Patch Update You Didn’t Read. 

Recently I have started playing Battlefield 4, and what characterises the game is...

👉Constant sensory overload: explosions, alerts, chaos everywhere.

👉You’re reacting fast, juggling multiple threats, rarely feeling “in control.”

👉Winning often comes from adapting on the move rather than executing a perfect plan....

Playing Battlefield really underscores the hormonal chaos that you could be going through as a result of possibly being Andropausal....

👉Emotional and physical “alerts” firing without warning.

👉Sudden shifts in energy, mood, focus, sleep, and stress tolerance.

👉You’re also adapting constantly, sometimes minute-to-minute, to changes you didn’t sign up for.

If you’re a man in midlife and things feel… different lately — you have a shorter fuse, thinner sleep, heavier thinking, less patience for nonsense —
you’re not weak, broken, or “losing it”, you could be going through #Andropause like me.

In short, you are likely operating the 'old you' in a changed system - your hormones are shifting, your recovery is slowing down, and Cognitive load is increasing. The body stops buffering stress the way it once did and what used to be manageable now feels like constant incoming fire.

This is likely why many of you describe your midlife chapters as chaos, without realising the terrain has changed massively, which is why it is important for you to 'pause' as the word 'Andropause' suggests, and adapt your personal tactics rather than power through the terrain with the same tactics.

As a man who is 4 years Andropausal I am empowering other men to speak because...

👉 Endurance becomes self-sabotage,
👉Silence becomes isolation,
👉Irritability becomes a signal, not a character flaw.

So to all men in their 40's upwards, who are suddenly feeling...different, it's ok, nothing to feel ashamed from, you just need to learn the new map, respect your new limits and, in Battlefield terms, upgrade the loadout instead of blaming the player.

Of course - you’re still responsible for your actions, you’re still accountable to your work, your partner, your values, but it os also important to recognise that you don’t have to pretend the battlefield hasn’t changed. Stop being Stoic and insistent on just battling through - know when to resupply.
