There comes a moment when you stop chasing closure and start choosing peace

Lord, please never let go of my hand

A wise person once told me

Let people do what they wanna do, so you see what they'd rather do

That'll answer all the questions you have

I took the bat and positioned myself at the front end of the car 

Years ago, when I was suddenly back in the dating world, a friend and I were heading out to our regular nightclub. We had just pulled away from my driveway when my phone rang. 

It was my youngest son. 

He was crying; the kind of crying that told me something wasn’t right. My boys didn’t cry just because they didn’t want to be somewhere. They cried when something felt wrong. 

He wanted to come home. 

I told my friend to turn the car around and drive me to his father’s house. 

On the way, my son explained what had happened. I asked to speak with his father. When he got on the phone, I told him I was on my way to get our son. 

“You are not taking him,” he said. 
“If you drive over here, you’ll be wasting your time.” 

We argued. I reminded him that we had always agreed our sons could speak up when something felt wrong; and that we would listen. 

Then I said something I’m not proud of. 

“If you don’t give me my son when I get there, I will take a bat to your car. And if he still isn’t outside, I’ll continue with the windows in your house.” 

He hung up. 

When we arrived, I pounded on the door. I called his phone again and again. No answer. 

I shouted that I was getting the bat from the car. 

My friend wanted to de-escalate the situation as she had me wait in the car. She knocked gently and pleaded, “Sir, please let her have the boy. I can’t control her much longer.” 

Silence. 

My friend walked back into the car

I stepped out of the car with the bat in my hand 

I took the bat
I positioned myself at the front end of the car 
I raised the bat...…....
 
And out walked my 6-year-old boy. 

I picked him up, put him in the car, and we drove home. 

There is something primal about a mother protecting her child. 

But here’s what I learned: 

Pain and anger can turn you into someone you don’t recognize. 

That night wasn’t about strength. It was about emotion taking over.

You'll never truly know how damaged a person is until you try to love them. 

True intimacy often acts as a mirror, reflecting the parts of us that still need healing. 

You never fully understand the depth of someone’s resilience; or their hidden fractures; until you try to build a meaningful connection with them.

In leadership, partnership, and life, the goal isn't to find people who are 'unbroken.' It’s about cultivating the psychological safety and patience required to support one another through the process of repair.

Love and loyalty aren't just about celebrating the highs; they are about choosing to stay when the layers of the past start to surface.
