Is storytelling becoming a dying skill in marketing?

AI might be able to write your copy, but it can’t win the room. That’s why storytelling needs to become your unfair advantage as a marketer.

This morning at 7:30 am in Sydney, Aether | AI Presentations hosted a breakfast talk 'From Chaos to Clarity' with Brent Smart, Karen Sterling-Levis, and Adam Ferrier (plus some unfortunate audience members who were pulled onstage).

I see it in meetings every week.
Marketers walking in and presenting as if they work in finance.
Lots of slides. Lots of charts. Lots of “evidence”.
No story.

That is not marketing. That is reporting.

Storytelling is not a “soft skill”. It is the job.
It is how you unlock belief when the data is incomplete.
It is how you translate research into something a CEO, a CFO and a sales leader can each care about for their own reasons.
Same strategy, different story for each audience. The best marketers do this instinctively.

And yes, data still matters. Great marketers do not reject data; they cast it.
They let the story lead and use the numbers to land the punch for the people who need it.

Time to rebuild your storytelling muscle before someone who can tell a better story takes your seat.

Productivity Hack: Why I Still Use Notebooks in a Digital World

I’ve been trying to cut out the distraction that comes with digital devices. Every time I open a notes app, I end up checking messages, scrolling, or losing the original thought I wanted to capture. So I’ve never given up something old fashioned: a notebook. I particularly like Moleskine ruled notebooks and I’ve been enjoying writing with this sexy metal pen from Carlton Cannes I picked up at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. 

There is something grounding about putting pen to paper. It slows your thinking just enough to give ideas space. It also creates a physical record of your thoughts that is not fighting for attention with notifications.

One simple hack has made this even more powerful. When I finish a page, I take a photo of it and load it into my favourite AI model. It will instantly produce a transcript or summary of whatever I’ve sketched, whether it is messy brainstorming, half formed ideas, or a detailed plan.

I get the clarity of analogue thinking with the convenience of digital organisation. It is the best of both worlds and a great way to stay focused without losing the efficiency that AI gives us.

There are only two real ways to set a marketing budget. And the one you choose determines whether you grow… or just coast.

Here’s what most people miss:

1. Top Down Budgeting
The finance-first model.
Percentage of revenue, last year plus a bit, or a fixed cap from finance.
Predictable. Tidy. Easy to defend.
But let’s be honest…
you’re optimising for simplicity, not performance.
Great for steady businesses. Not for ambitious ones.

2. Bottom Up Budgeting
Objective-based budgeting.
You start with the outcomes you want; revenue, pipeline, market expansion, product launches.
Then you calculate what it actually takes to achieve them.
This is how high-growth companies plan.
It aligns investment with strategy and exposes the legacy spending no one wants to talk about.
