International Women’s Day 2026. Cue the cutesy selfies & slogans on T-shirts...


Don't get me wrong
I completely respect the global movement of IWD. 
But my perspective on today is a little different.

When I think about International Women's Day, 
I don't think about following the latest industry tropes. 

I think about gender equality. 
I think about the pay gap. 

I think about the fact that until 1974, a woman couldn't even get a credit card in her own name without a male cosigner.

That isn't ancient history. 
That is the foundation we built our careers on.

So let’s be honest about the reality of the women actually surviving this business.

We are the women who watched male peers get applauded for the same exact ideas we already pitched.

We are the women who get completely ignored until we start lapping the guys who wrote us off, and suddenly they want to "collaborate."

We are the women who had to carefully script our words for fear of being publicly berated by other women protecting their own turf. 

We earned our seats the hard way.

Do the empowerment panels and networking mixers have a place? 
Yes. Absolutely.
They are the starter motor.

For a 22 YO woman walking into a dealership where she is the only female employee, finding community is a lifeline. 

It builds armor. 
It teaches younger women they aren't alone.

But I’m way past that part of my career. 
& yes, while community is the starter motor, 
SPONSORSHIP is the engine.

We have to get past the performative fun stuff…

In an industry that is still 82% male,
the women who survive aren't looking for a participation trophy. 

We have the grit. 
We have the intellectual capital.

& like I was recently quoted saying in Automotive News: 

“Do not just mentor us. Mentoring is a really cheap word when you should actually be sponsoring women.”

We don’t need more advice over coffee. 
We need leaders to put their money where their mouth is.

Are you saying women’s names in the rooms they aren’t in?
Are you putting your own political capital on the line to help them get the promotion? 
Or are you just slapping an #IWD hashtag on a post & calling it leadership?

Awareness is great, but until we have the RIGHT people in the RIGHT seats...
 
It's noise. 
Just noise.
The drowning sound of noise.

I've had people (MEN) take a risk & put their name on me. 
It's time we all start doing the same for the top talent around us. 
Stop talking about it & start sponsoring it.

So yes, celebrate today
Celebrate the ABSOLUTE GRIT of the women in this business. 

But remember that the spotlight needs to be even brighter tomorrow
AND EVERY DAY AFTER THAT.

Because for me? 
International Women’s Day is every day I look in the mirror.

& by absolute grit.

Look at this picture
Absorb it. 

This is what happens a real conversation unfolds. 

It’s the joy of shared experiences
It’s answering the hard questions.

But getting here doesn't happen by accident. 

& it certainly doesn't happen by popping a hashtag on a post for Women's History Month.

It happens because someone stops talking about mentorship and starts SPONSORING.

If we want more moments like this in our industry…

Leaders need to show up
and take action

Are you saying her name in rooms where actual decisions are made?

Are you giving her authority to make the final call or only the responsibility to execute it?

Are you doing the work searching out & highlighting new talent….or are you taking the easy route and recycling the same voices everyone already knows?

We didn’t earn our seats to sit quietly in the audience.

We earned them to rewrite the old way of doing things 

& have a damn good time doing it.
