My main goal in this role has been to find solutions which reconcile the traditional poor environmental track record of extraction industries and a cleaner future.

I've been building businesses from the ground up for 12+ years. I am a recent Dad of 2 boys under 2.5! My work informs one goal…. to spend more time with my family. 

But, I wasn’t like this always. I ground myself to a nub for nearly 9 years and in 2019 I closed a business, I didn’t exit, I closed it. I failed. 

I was completely burnt out. I wasn’t just tired. I was medically burnt out, a doctor said, “you need to stop or you’re going to die”. I was 32.

We opened Susie's Rise & Dine in April 2025, and 9 months later here are some updates so far:

- Officially hit 500+ reviews at a 4.6. If you're a restaurant and can hit 1,000+ reviews at a 4.6/4.7 on Google you're a unicorn.
- We've surpassed in $1M in total revenue - that's a lot of pancakes 🥞 
- We're serving brunch & dinner. Staple items (infamous pancakes, banana pudding, etc.) live on both menus!
- We've increased hours of operation on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to 9pm.
- We consistently have a 1hr+ wait and reservations are immediately booked once they open. This shows we can service this demand through meal delivery apps and potentially expansion.
- We've collaborated with big brands like Sephora in our space!
- We haven't paid for ANY traditional marketing. No paid posting, or anything of the sort.

Our team put tons of work creating delicious menu items, but what takes it over the top is how we make people feel - the service, the 90s/2000s playlist, the energy, excitement and level of care from our team.

- New retailer commitments for 2026 across North America are locked in and the team is dialed in on depth/turns with our key partners. Sales makes everyone happy!
- Our tradeshow circuit is much more deliberate this year - focusing on key partners, and not spreading ourselves too thin.
- New B2B relationships for alternative channels are materializing
- Meaningful in-person collaboration events are in the works. NDW will be popping up in your local community more and more as the weeks go by.
- New flavors are set for launch, tied to collaborations with partner brands
- New product R&D is happening behind the scenes - this is some of the most fun for me :)
- Content is getting dialled up from a quality and quantity perspective.
- New team members set to join early Feb!

Just wrapped up my first 48 hour fast that I've ever done...

This was a very eye-opening experience and was a great mental test.

During this 48 hour window I only consumed water, black coffee, and salt (source of electrolytes - mostly sodium).

Here's how it went:

Hours 0-16 were relatively easy, as it's common to intermittent fast for the first part of a day. 

Hours 16-24 were tough. Was a bit lightheaded at times, low blood sugar, and was hungry/craving food like you couldn't believe.

Hours 24-48 were good. I wasn't hungry at all, and my energy would come and go in waves. About 4 hours with a lot of energy and high productivity, followed by a few hours of feeling fatigued. 

Here's what I learned:

- Great test of discipline and building the anterior mid cingulate cortex with something you don't want to do
- Resets gut and metabolism
- Food tastes waaaaay better after you finish
- Benefits of autophagy are through the roof - think out with the old cells and in with the new!
- No cravings for sugar, unhealthy or other food after you're done. You can start with a fresh slate and it makes it easier to introduce new dietary habits, and cut things that weren't healthy or serving you.

I'll be implementing a 48-72 hour fast 1 time per month moving forward. The benefits are undeniable.

This applies to everything, including the things you don't want to do.

When you do the things you don't want to do, you're building a part of your brain called the anterior mid-cingulate cortex, and the bigger/more developed that is, the greater your lifespan (correlated directly with your willingness to live).

Keep it simple.

Do the damn thing.

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take... a cliché for a reason. 

But valid nonetheless.

This was just a few shots while passing by the Venice beach bball courts the other week. 

Tut it’s a reminder I keep coming back to in business: progress only comes from attempting. 

You take the shot, you see what worked (or didn’t), you adjust your form, and you try again and get reps up.

In sport, feedback is instant. 

In business, it’s a bit slower, but the principle is the same. 

Iteration beats hesitation every time.

If you’re waiting for the “perfect” moment, strategy, or signal… you’re probably just standing still. 

Take the shot. Learn from the miss. Give yourself a chance to make the next one.

The parallels between sport and business are endless, and the lesson is always the same: momentum favors action.

I'm using AI in 2 main ways...

1) To proof my work
2) When I know the answer and I can proof its work

Let me explain #2 and the mishap I could have had if I hadn't know what to look for...

I was running numbers on product costing and was building a model to see how we'd be able to achieve economies of scale as we increased volume. My prompts led to the margin being off by ~20%!! It turns out the AI left out a key component and if I relied entirely on its output, I could have put a plan into action with a broken model...

I knew approximately where we needed to be and I had the means to validate any numbers it spit out, so I was able to catch it before it was actionable.

Moral of the story, make sure you know what you're looking for with AI, otherwise you won't know when it misses something.

Additionally, there is a third...

AI is meaningful for administrative work... lately we've been using Kaizntree to automate tracking of retail orders, inventory, payments, and to streamline fulfillment of orders through EDI. Really anything with a Google Sheets workflow that might require copy and paste style work, data entry and acknowledgements.

It's been a game-changer and is saving my operations team a ton of time! With a lean team like ours, I couldn't imagine going back.
