A few weeks ago, we rented a lodge in the mountains for our entire team to get together and relax for the weekend. Why?

Because as a mostly-remote company, we only do a few team-building events a year.

So when we do them, we like to keep things simple and intentional.

No packed agenda. No forced bonding. Just good food, good wine, and a space to be human.

What did we do?

We cooked together — homemade gnocchi, grilled meats, team-effort Italian dinners. We played trivia on Kahoot (mostly about sci-fi, retro games, and classic geek movies). We had foosball and air hockey battles, four VR headsets, and board games... a lot of board games.

Some of us relaxed. Some of us cooked. Some of us just talked about our lives outside of work.

And that's the entire point.

We wanted to give everyone the time and space for real connection, no matter what that looks like for each person.

Even our most introverted colleagues showed up and stayed until the end.

And for our remote teammates, this was one of those rare chances when screen names became real handshakes. We even made sure those who couldn’t attend in person could still join in online.

Because inclusivity matters.

It’s easy to forget, but it’s not just the work that keeps a team together. It’s things like mutual respect, shared moments with one another, and accepting people as they are.

Most product innovation labs die off before they ever make it to their third MVP. Not because they have bad ideas. But because they don't know how to execute on them. Here's why:
 
Innovation labs are great at understanding the concept of experimentation.
 
They know validating ideas is key, which is how they justify the money they spend.
 
The problem is, they often build too much functionality into their products just to validate one hypothesis. Especially in regulated industries like healthcare or fintech.
 
We've seen it happen far too many times:
 
A lab wants to prove everything all at once. So they build full‑blown platforms instead of testing a simple version first.
 
The issue here is that by the time the product's finally “ready,” they’ve wasted months and burned through their entire budget.
 
On the flip side, you've got the solo founder who's in survival mode.
 
They’re fighting for funding. Every feature has to earn its place. So they move fast, test lean, and learn faster.
 
But for innovation leads or program directors, the goal is different.
 
They need to test as many assumptions as possible, and let the bad ones die quickly. That’s how real innovation happens for them.
 
Here's the problem I see with modern-day innovation labs:
 
The data shows that over 80% of corporate innovation initiatives never deliver measurable ROI. Not because of a lack of ideas. But because of a slow and expensive validation.
 
That’s a huge missed opportunity if you ask me.
 
But after 15 years of building SaaS products, I can say that the ones who succeed have a few things in common:
 
👉 They build fast
👉 They test even faster
👉 They measure learning, not just features
 
So if you’re running an innovation lab, I'd recommend treating your MVPs like experiments, not full-blown products.
 
Because the goal isn’t to prove you can build.
 
It’s to prove whether it’s worth building at all.

I'm not afraid to say it:

Innovation labs are completely broken.

And no, it's not because their ideas are bad (they're actually quite good). It's because they often wait too long to act on them.

Where startup founders usually have the edge is:

👉 They make decisions fast
👉 They pick a direction and move
👉 And if it fails, they pivot, not panic

But the opposite is true inside corporate innovation labs.

Decision-making is broken — endless workshops, too many stakeholders, zero urgency.

So by the time someone actually calls the shot and decides on something, the window is already gone... and the MVP becomes irrelevant before it even ships.

Here’s what I often see with these labs:

They have the budget to test 5–10 ideas in parallel, but they treat each one like it has to be perfect from day one.

So what do they do? They overthink, overbuild, and overcomplicate, resulting in an MVP that takes 6 months to build when it should have only taken 6 weeks, MAX.

Innovation labs don't need more ideas. They just need a process that keeps things moving.

How do you find your own boring SaaS goldmine?

👉 Talk to people in the trenches – compliance, logistics, farm ops, fund admins.

👉 Watch for Excel overuse and paperwork mountains. If a process looks ugly, there’s profit hiding underneath.

👉 Validate with a single question: “How much does this manual mess cost you every month?” If the answer shocks you, you’ve struck gold.

One of the simplest parts of developing a SaaS product is also the one most founders overcomplicate:

Scoping the first release.

The thing is, founders know it should be simple. They know it’s about validating an assumption or delivering just enough value to test demand.

But here’s what usually ends up happening:

They start listing features – A, B, C, D...

...then somehow, every one of those features becomes a “must-have.”

Next thing you know, the MVP scope is packed with nice-to-haves disguised as P1s.

Now? They’re spending 3x more time (and budget) building tech that may never even get used.

This is exactly how startups quietly burn their runway.

So instead of asking how many features you can fit in, there's a better question to ask:

“What's the least we need to build to prove or disprove our value proposition?”

Here’s how to snap out of it:

👉 1. Talk to users who are actively struggling today. Ignore the polite “we’ll try it when…” crowd.

👉 2. Ship for real pain, not potential markets.

👉 3. If you can’t name a customer who’d be furious if your product disappeared, keep digging.

It’s easy to build for potential.

It’s harder – but far more useful – to build for reality.

The sooner you cut the “someday” features, the faster you’ll find the users who actually care if you win.

There’s one conversation I have with SaaS founders more than any other ,and it always starts the same way:

“Can you just take the roadmap and run with it?”

Here’s my answer:

A great agency can deliver everything you ask for.

But the products that actually win have something else:

A founder who never lets go of the vision.
