This was an idea that I explored briefly, to help dev agencies land more clients via email marketing.

Most dev agencies I had contact with had no idea how to do email marketing, and most email marketing companies that I had contact with had no idea how dev agencies worked. I understood dev agencies, and I was starting to understand email marketing, so I figured that put me in a good position to give this a shot. Most importantly, I had an itch to start a business, so I did that.

I expected to be able to set direction and build processes from the beginning, and get the ball rolling by subcontracting the largest part of the work. You probably know that's not how things work, but I needed this experience to learn that lesson.

I was actually able to put together a decent initial process using Sales Navigator, Apollo, Salesflare and Woodpecker, and while the emails were a bit spammy, I did get some replies and a couple of meetings. I even trained one person on a large part of it.

Eventually I shut it down because of the economic situation. Dev agencies were struggling to get clients, and the situation showed no signs of improving. That may sound like the best way to launch a service like this, but while I was certainly better than most dev agencies at getting them clients, I wasn't good enough to turn the situation around.

Overall I'm satisfied with the experience. I learned some valuable lessons, and didn't lose too much money in the process.

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

AWS Authorized Instructor, which allows me to teach official AWS trainings. This does NOT mean I am directly employed by AWS, just that I am a part of the AWS Training Program as an authorized freelance instructor (i.e. not an employee), and certified to teach AWS official trainings.

I do not create trainings material, I just deliver the official trainings (online or in person) as a freelancer.

Some statistics:
- 10 courses taught
- >150 attendants in total
- 4.8 CSAT score

While a few times I've delivered for one or two teams of a single company, in most of the classes I've taught the group was very heterogeneous, comprised of people from different companies with different positions, different backgrounds and different areas of expertise, and the challenge would be to explain the topics from various angles so that everyone could relate to them in some way.

Not only did I increase the depth of my knowledge about the topics that I taught, I also learned how to communicate effectively with heterogeneous groups, catering to diverse backgrounds and varying levels of knowledge in different areas of expertise. And very importantly, I learned how to not only get them to listen to what I was saying, but rather get them to understand it and actually learn it. I even learned how to facilitate discussions and collaborative exercises. Also, timekeeping skills play a huge role in teaching successfully.

Teaching is hard, and teaching well is even harder. And when it comes to trainings, AWS won't settle for anything less than excellent quality. I'm very proud to say that I achieved and maintained that level of excellence and those high standards throughout the trainings that I've taught. And this goes beyond the CSAT scores (which were always in the top 10%), this is about the people, and the impact that I I've the opportunity to have in their careers.

There's two things you need to understand about me in the moment I accepted a software engineer position at Caramel Point:
- Originally I started out as a developer, and I coded for several years before going into devops and cloud.
- I had barely touched a line of code in the last two years when they offered me the position.

So, in I went, armed with some pretty rusty knowledge on how to code and no actual experience in the technologies that they were using. They told me I had to learn React, Node and GCP, and I was cool with that. Then they mentioned something called NFTs, and that's where they lost me.

A month in I was writing production code in React while single-handedly designing and implementing (including the code) a serverless, event-driven backend in GCP. After two more months I was leading a small team, learning solidity on the side and implementing my own NFT project (nothing commercial).

The trick was bringing my other experiences to the table. In those two years that I didn't spend coding I improved my communication skills A LOT and got a wider perspective on software solutions and architectures. Some knowledge like writing CloudFormation templates was not at all transferrable, and I did notice some rust in my coding skills, but I never stopped dealing with difficult problems, so that skill was pretty sharp.

I have to say, Caramel Point really is a great place to work, filled with great people and with a culture centered around those people. This company is literally the reason why I came back to coding.

Some achievements:
- Designed and built an event-driven private NFT environment (Ethereum, IPFS and Arweave) deployed on Kubernetes
- Single-handedly built a serverless, event-driven backend on GCP to handle 400 transactions per hour
- Led a team of 5 people to create a full NFT platform

Software Engineer

Back when I made the jump from dev to devops I thought nobody would hire me with zero devops experience, so if no company was going to take me I would start my own company and hire myself. Pretty stupid, I know, but that's where Dream On originally comes from. I didn't actually want to run a company, so I just focused on improving my skills, developing my personal brand and marketing myself as an SME. I was effectively a freelancer working with a cool email address, and I never even got around to building Dream On's website.

As a freelancing experience, it was rocky, but mostly in a good way. First I landed a role as a contractor at McAfee, and learned a lot of Kubernetes the hard way. After that I did several small jobs through Upwork and Fiverr, and slowly found my niche: small companies whose TL and CTO weren't experts in AWS, but knew enough to understand that they needed an expert.

I landed several clients through LinkedIn and got to design, build and improve many interesting solutions. I got offered some full-time roles, but I rejected them in favor of several small clients whom I billed by the hour, plus the official AWS trainings that I was teaching as an AWS Authorized Instructor.

2021 found me accepting a short term contractor role with Caramel Point, and I was so enamored by their culture and their way of working that when they offered me a full-time dev position I gladly accepted.

I marked that date as the end of this freelancing phase, but a year and a bit later I turned back to Dream On. It was a completely different experience though, so I listed it as a different experience.

At some points of my career I was approached to teach classes on different aspects of software development. These small experiences served me as a basis to later land a freelance AWS Authorized Instructor position, as well as practice and improve my communication skills in a time when I wasn't as confident standing in front of an audience or acting as an expert.

This is the list of courses that I've had the pleasure of teaching, for which I designed the curriculum (approved by the customer), created all the teaching materials, and was either the main or the only instructor:
- Test Automation introductory course: Geared towards people with some very basic coding notions and no formal software development experience, the course started by explaining the software development lifecycle and the importance of testing, then covered basic notions of testing and testing principles, test cases and test plans, delved into test automation using Selenium, and finished with a class on Scrum and agile methodologies. 20 alumni.
- AWS Solutions Architect Associate mentoring: The goal was not to teach AWS itself, but rather to help the alumni pass the Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect Associate certifications. It started with a bit of my own experience taking the exam, then covered the topics and the structure of the exam. Then it became weekly meetings to clear doubts, discuss some topics, and some vertical knowledge transfer, the duration of which I tried to keep under a half of the meeting duration. There were also a lot of practice questions, which we analyzed and reviewed together. 12 alumni.
- Docker for developers: A course designed for java developers with no knowledge or experience in containers. The first two classes were focused on the what and the why (and the paradigm shift needed to understand why containers are good), after which we got into Docker and how to use it, and finished with a brief overview of orchestration and Kubernetes. 6 alumni.

I decided to start posting regularly on LinkedIn earlier this year. 



It's been a wild experience through and through. 

From the first weeks of posting and having 3 impressions to "successful" months where I felt I had cracked the code, only to have the algorithm humble me again the following week.

However, when you put the ego aside and see beyond the impressions and engagement, you can see the other side of it.

Being active on LinkedIn has allowed me to learn A LOT through the content of some excellent people posting here.
