The Leisure Expert Panel was formed to bring together the stakeholders and influencers who hold interest in the way in which the leisure industry manages health, safety, security and risk and whom will either be subject to scrutiny of its management systems or make decisions on liability (both criminal and civil). These persons will already be involved in performing a management, advisory, representative or regulatory role within the leisure industry.

The aims of the Panel are to consider and promote ways to reduce the risk of injury and loss within the leisure industry and promote consistency in operations and regulation.

Given slips are the biggest cause of insurance claim in the leisure sector, I helped drive - and co-authored - a best-practice guidance document published by the Panel on this subject.

Safety is personal to me. When you get run over by a car that loses control and mounts the kerb (May 2012), it’s tough not to become extremely passionate about keeping people safe!

But I also believe that safety is key to business performance: “Safetynomics”. It’s not just morally right to ensure safety, it makes financial sense too.

My business, Slip Safety Services, combines both:
a) on average, clients see a 57% reduction in slip accidents and injuries
b) clients are preventing £10m+ of insurance claims each year



Slip accidents are a relevant risk to 85% of businesses (The State Of Safety, 2022). They cause 300,000 A&E admissions and £1bn+ of insurance claims a year.

I’ve never visited a business that has no “slips, trips and falls” risk assessment, policies and procedures. We’re all trying our best.

But, RIDDOR rates have been flatlining at c.30% for the last 10+ years. Conclusion: the basics have got us as far as they can...
