Glencore has restarted merger talks with Rio Tinto to create the world’s largest mining company. The combined entity would have an enterprise value exceeding $260bn. 

The proposed merger is a direct result of growing Copper demand. Copper is used heavily in construction of AI data centres which is a growth area. Coupled with the fact that the world’s major mines are becoming less productive as they reach maturity creates the perfect storm. 

Mining companies like Glencore and Rio are investing more to find new resources.

* Balderton Capital, one of Europe’s longest-established venture capital firms, has delivered one of the most spectacular returns in European VC history after turning a £1 million early investment in UK fintech Revolut into a multibillion-dollar windfall. Spun out of Silicon Valley firm Benchmark in the 2000s, Balderton has stuck to a disciplined model — a small partnership, early-stage focus and deep conviction bets — while raising more than $5 billion to back European start-ups. 

** Over the past year alone, the firm has realised about $2 billion in profits by selling down part of its Revolut stake, which originated with a seed cheque written in 2015. Revolut’s valuation has since surged to $75 billion following a late-2025 share sale, up from roughly $45 billion previously, allowing early investors to crystallise gains. Balderton is understood to have held more than a 10 per cent stake before sales, retaining a meaningful position even after major cash-outs. 

*** The outcome highlights venture capital’s power-law economics: Balderton’s Fund V, which housed the original Revolut investment, has returned more than 25 times its invested capital, with one breakout success compensating for countless failed bets.
