System design isn’t about knowing buzzwords.
It’s about understanding trade-offs.

🚨 JWT Authentication: A Must-Know for Your Next System Design Interview

If you’re preparing for backend or system design interviews, understanding JWT isn’t optional, it’s essential.

Most engineers can explain the basic flow:
1️⃣ Client logs in
2️⃣ Server verifies credentials
3️⃣ JWT is generated & signed
4️⃣ Token is sent back
5️⃣ Client includes it in future requests
6️⃣ Server validates signature & claims
7️⃣ Refresh token issues a new access token

But interviews go deeper.

Here’s what you should be ready to discuss 👇
🔐 Statelessness vs Revocation Tradeoff
JWTs scale beautifully because they’re stateless.
But how do you revoke them?
→ Short-lived access tokens
→ Refresh token rotation
→ Token versioning
→ Blacklists

🏗 HS256 vs RS256
In microservices, RS256 is often preferred.
Private key signs. Public key verifies.
No shared secret across services.

🌐 HTTP Status Codes — Small Topic, Big Interview Signal

Most candidates know HTTP status codes.
Very few know when and why to use them correctly.
And interviewers notice that difference.

In backend, system design, and API rounds, questions often sound like:
🔺 “What status code would you return here?”
🔺 “Why not 200?”
🔺 “Should this be 401 or 403?”

That’s where fundamentals matter.

A quick interview-oriented lens:
▶️ 200 / 201 / 202 → Success, but different meanings
▶️ 301 vs 302 → Permanent vs temporary decisions

REST vs GraphQL is not about “which is better.”
In interviews, it’s about understanding trade-offs.

REST:
* Multiple endpoints
* Server defines response shape
* Can cause over/under-fetching
* Strong HTTP caching (ETag, CDN, Cache-Control)
* Simple, mature, great for CRUD & public APIs

GraphQL:
* Single endpoint
* Client defines fields
* No over/under-fetching
* Aggregates multiple services via resolvers
* Great for mobile apps & fast-moving frontend teams

Now the real differentiator 👇
REST scales well with CDN and native HTTP caching.
GraphQL adds flexibility but increases complexity:

* N+1 problem
* Harder caching
* Query depth & cost control required
* Gateway can become a bottleneck

In an interview, I’d say:
If the system is resource-driven, cache-heavy, and simple → REST.
If the system needs aggregation, flexible data fetching, and multiple client types → GraphQL.

The correct answer is never the tool.
It’s the trade-offs.

Most candidates jump straight into coding.
Strong candidates start with questions.
Here’s how I would approach it in a System Design interview 👇

1️⃣ Clarify Requirements
Functional:
* User submits long URL
* System returns short URL
* Redirect short → original URL

Non-functional:
* High read traffic (redirection heavy)
* Low latency (<100ms)

As AI systems and high-performance computing continue to evolve 🚀, understanding the difference between CPUs, GPUs, and TPUs is more important than ever. While they’re all processors, they are built with very different design goals — and each dominates in specific types of workloads.

🖥️ The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the general-purpose brain of a computer. It’s designed for low-latency performance and complex control logic. With sophisticated cache hierarchies (L1, L2, L3) and strong single-threaded performance, CPUs excel at running operating systems, managing applications, and handling decision-heavy or branching tasks. If your workload involves coordination, control flow, or quick responsiveness, the CPU is your go-to. Think of it as the 🧠 project manager — versatile, flexible, and in charge.

🎮 The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), on the other hand, is built for massive parallelism. Instead of optimizing for low latency, GPUs maximize throughput by running thousands of threads simultaneously using SIMT architecture. Instead of memorizing solutions, memorize problem pattern → algorithm mapping.

4️⃣ Think About Visited & State Tracking
Every graph problem usually fails because of:
* Forgetting visited array
* Not handling cycles
* Not handling disconnected components

Always think:
* Do I need a visited array?
* Do I need parent tracking?
* Do I need recursion stack?

5️⃣ Talk Before You Code
In interviews, narration matters.

Say things like:
🗯️ “I’ll build an adjacency list first.”
🗯️ “I’ll use BFS since this is an unweighted shortest path problem.”
🗯️ “Time complexity will be O(V + E).”
This builds confidence in the interviewer.

6️⃣ Edge Cases You Must Think About
* Empty graph
* Single node
* Self loops
* Multiple components
* Negative weights
* Very large inputs (stack overflow in DFS?)

Mentioning these makes you stand out.

7️⃣ Practice Strategy (Very Important)
Don’t randomly solve graph problems.

Instead:
Step 1: Master BFS & DFS deeply
Step 2: Practice cycle detection
Step 3: Learn topological sort
Step 4: Learn Dijkstra
Step 5: Learn Union-Find

Because this isn’t just about coding it tests:
• Problem modeling
• Logical reasoning
• Ability to prove correctness
• Understanding of optimal substructure

So how do you identify it quickly under pressure?

🔎 The 60-Second Interview Test

Ask yourself:
👉 “If I take the best choice right now, can it ever hurt me later?”

If NO → Greedy is likely safe.
If YES or NOT SURE → Think DP.
