Self-Management of Depression

Depression is a complex illness, which presents in a myriad of ways and almost 60-70% people treated with antidepressants fail to achieve a symptom-free state when first treated with these medications. The treatment of depression cannot be pigeon-holed into one or two kinds of treatment modalities. Self-management is increasingly becoming the standard of care in people with long-standing medical conditions. Self-management puts one in the driver’s seat with regards to making choices regarding one’s health. However, treatment of depression has lagged behind in incorporating the concept of self-management with the most popular self-help paradigm on depression focusing mostly on cognitive-behavioral approaches. Self-management goes beyond the narrow perspective of self-help and addresses life style changes, social relationships, communication, problem-solving, and also includes elements of wellness and recovery.

Change Maker

Isle of Wight Council

Internal consultancy type of role. Provided executive leadership, vision, and direction in driving innovation and transformation, planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating programmes and services that are family-centred and strength-based as part of the Public Health vision to develop an integrated ‘family platform’. 

Designed and lead on the delivery of a comprehensive training programme for the 'wider public health workforce' (front line staff of public and voluntary sector organisations who contribute to the delivery of the public health agenda).

Head of Systems Transformation (Public Health)

Head of Service role, reporting to the Managing Director/ Head of Paid Service. 
- Provided strategic leadership and operational management of the local delivery of the national Troubled Families Initiative on the Isle of Wight (where it is known as the Strengthening Families Programme - SFP) and Accredited Community Support Officers (ACSO) service.
- Lead on the application of 'lean system thinking' to the redesign and a multi-agency delivery of integrated services which resulted in the delivery of efficiency savings for the Council.
- Many examples of good practice in SFP delivery were acknowledged in the report on the implementation of the Troubled Families Initiative in the South East of England published by the South East Strategic Leaders (SESL) network in September 2013.
- Success of SFP in helping children and their families to make positive changes was noted in the Ofsted Inspection Report published in November 2014. 
- Received an Inspirational Employee Award in January 2015.
- Secured over £360,000 of reward funding for achieving the target set by the government.

Strengthening Families Programme Lead

Internal consultancy type of role. The purpose of this job was to provide strategic leadership, shape and drive Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) Programme and other change initiatives within the Community Wellbeing and Social Care Directorate in order to embed performance culture.
- Lead the development and implementation of a new cutting edge strategic planning and performance management framework for the Directorate based on the balanced scorecard methodology.
- Designed and delivered workshops on programme and project management, strategic planning and service delivery in a multi-agency environment 
- Developed a Public Health Transition Plan for the Isle of Wight Council as the receiving organisation in response to new legislation.

Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) Programme Lead

- Turned around a failing capital project (restoration of a Victorian cemetery in Ryde) in 2010, and ensured it was delivered on time, on budget and to a required specification.  Received a commendation letter from the Chairman of the Council.  The project received a Conservation Award in April 2011.
- Delivered over £400,000 annual savings, as a result of initiating and undertaking a review and restructure of portfolio services.
- Ensured that all targets set for the Statutory Community Safety Partnership were achieved (for the first time in many years), by reviewing, reorganising and effectively managing its work. 
- Effectively managed the process and change associated with the expansion of Community Safety Services from 1 single-discipline team and 35 employees in 2007, to 8 multi-discipline teams in total and 111 members of staff by 2010.

Head of Community Safety Services

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council

- Ensured the Council won a number of national awards, and recognition by the Government as a model for good practice, for work undertaken in developing an award winning Community Safety Team, in particular the success of internal/external partnerships working in community safety.
- Developed and implemented an award winning community warden scheme, in partnership with other agencies and the local community, securing grants in excess of £200,000.
- The above work lead to achieving Beacon status in  Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour.

Community Safety Manager

One year secondment.
- Deputised for the Head of Policy and Partnerships during his extended period of sickness.
- Was instrumental in the development, and delivery of a significant number of corporate initiatives, including: leading work on the development of the Community Strategy and Council Plan; Equalities and Diversity Strategy and a new Partnership Framework for the Borough.  
The above work lead to achieving Beacon status in three areas: Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour; Affordable Housing; and Delivering Sustainable Communities through the Planning System, and resulted in the Council being asked to join a CLG Advisory Board for Place Shaping.

Policy Manager

Successfully managed 4 community safety projects, and was responsible for developing new governance arrangements, for the statutory Community Safety Partnership, developed Multi-agency Communications Strategy,   a variety of Action and Service Plans.  
Was offered a permanent post (including promotion) based on the achieved results.

Community Safety Officer

Joint Project of UNICEF and Club 'Compass', Kiev, Ukraine

UNICEF stands for the United Nations Children's Fund.

Assignments included:
- Designing and delivering training courses on Children’s Rights for journalists.       
- Co-writing and editing a guide for journalists on the rights of the child, that was subsequently published and also used as a student textbook.

External Collaborator/Consultant

International Children’s and Youth Rights League – ICYRL (Registered Charity)

Chaired the Executive Board and acted as CEO for a variety of projects.  Also campaigned and lobbied for children/human rights at all levels. Achievements included:
- Development/accreditation and introduction of school based courses on children’s/human rights.
- Providing policy recommendations, and advisory service to both local government and the Ukrainian Parliament, on human rights, children’s rights and wellbeing.
- Leading on partnership working with a number of national and international organisations.

Co-Founder and President

ILO/IPEC Office in Kyiv City, Ukraine

ILO stands for International Labour Organisation,  the only 'tripartite' United Nations agency that brings together representatives of governments, employers and workers to jointly shape policies and programmes promoting Decent Work for all. IPEC stands for International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour.

Assignments included:
- Desk study and report generation on Child Labour in Ukraine, and International Experience including Good Practice of Combating Child Labour (subsequently published).     
- Developing policy-making recommendations to combat Child Labour in Ukraine for the Ukrainian government (subsequently published).

Three consecutive projects under the EU’s Phare/Tacis for Democracy Programme

The Phare/Tacis Democracy Programme has contributed to the growth and legitimacy of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) sector in the beneficiary countries of Easter Europe and Mongolia. It has facilitated transfer of know-how and partnerships between eastern and western civil societies and has provided great visibility for the EU.

•	Lead a multi-disciplinary team of consultants and experts (around 20 persons continuously co-operating) under three consecutive projects: ACIT (Agency for Consultation, Information and Training for NGOs),  NGO Qualified Dialogue and Ukrainian Children's and Youth Rights Center.
•	Co-ordinated the work of 5 partner organisations under the NGO Qualified Dialogue and Ukrainian Children's and Youth Rights Centre projects.
•	Provided expert and advisory services on various aspects of public/private partnership, development of community and voluntary sector organisations, children's rights, human rights and international co-operation to local administrations, ministries and the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament).
•	Was a speaker at various regional, national and international conferences on children's rights, human rights, NGO development and international co-operation.
