I’ve seen a lot of individuals on LinkedIn default to lazy outreach and kill the relationship before it starts.

Here are 6 better ways to turn engagement into real opportunity:

1. Invite them to something intimate: A small dinner, roundtable, or private event beats a “15-minute intro call” every time. It allows you to get to know each other better in an intimate setting. 

2. Comment on their content thoughtfully: Don’t try to pitch anything in your comment, just show you’re paying attention to what they’re saying and that you genuinely care. This means providing value in your comments and adding thoughtful remarks. 

3. Leverage proximity: If you’re traveling to their city, reach out on LinkedIn and invite them to a casual coffee or lunch. This shows that you’re willing to take time out of your day to meet up with them in their city. 

4. Follow up with context: Reference the post they engaged with (i.e. they liked or commented on it) and why it meant something to you.
 
5. Share something genuinely useful: An insight, article, or perspective that connects to their world (not yours).

6. Play the long game: Not every follow-up needs a meeting. Sometimes the win is staying visible and providing value. 

LinkedIn can be the start of a relationship if you treat outreach correctly.

If you’re serious about becoming AI-first, don’t just ask “How do we use more AI?”

Start asking:

1. Do we have an AI strategy for software engineering, or just for coding?

Coding is one part of the engineering lifecycle. Software has to be deployed, run, monitored, debugged, and maintained. Do we have an AI strategy for the complete lifecycle?

2. Where do we have the biggest problem and the biggest leverage?

Most AI investment goes where it’s easiest to deploy, not where it creates the most value. Where are you burning the most engineering hours? Where is complexity growing fastest? That's where AI leverage matters most.

3. Are we investing in AI that makes tasks faster or AI that makes the organization better?

Point solutions help individuals move faster. But they don't compound. The question is whether your AI investments are building institutional capability or just renting speed.

The AI Glass Wall You’re Not Planning For

In the race to turn AI from buzzword to bottom-line impact, Cisco has built one of the most comprehensive internal enablement programs in the corporate world. 

Its mission: to make 80,000 employees confident, capable, and eager to apply AI in their daily work.

At the entry level, individuals use off-the-shelf generative AI tools like generative AI to speed up their tasks, like drafting emails, writing code snippets, summarizing reports. 

The next level comes when employees imagine AI as their own “MBA intern” and then translate those tasks into agents that work consistently on their behalf. Higher still, organizations re-engineer workflows across roles to unlock cross-functional impact. The peak of the trajectory is where entirely new business models emerge from entirely new ways of working.

Cisco’s story spans this curve. And it starts with Gianpaolo Barozzi’s, Cisco’s 3P Chief Technology Officer, simple but powerful principle: AI is a team sport.

Cisco’s first big leap was the “Teaming with AI” pilot. 111 teams with 819 employees out of a 2,400-person unit were invited to experiment with AI tools. The premise was simple: use AI like you’d coach an intern, check its work, guide it, and build trust over time. Leaders worked alongside their teams, modeling the behavior.

In just three months, the pilot:

Produced 182 team-defined use cases.
Doubled AI tool usage.
Boosted employee confidence in using generative AI from 62% to 91%.

Cisco shows that AI adoption works when it’s treated as a team sport. 

By pairing role-specific enablement with fundamental workflow redesign, and with leaders like Gianpaolo Barozzi modeling the way, the company demonstrates that AI’s real power emerges when teams learn, lead, and innovate with it together.
