He asked it like it was a test.

I was managing the Ace Hardware store at the time.

I left work early. Secretly too.

I changed into a suit in my car across the street from the building.

I wanted this opportunity.

He pointed to a skyscraper.

“See that building? 
Are you willing to start at the top floor and work your way down?”

I said yes.
The truth? I had no idea how I’d do it.

Then he leaned forward and asked it:
“The almighty dollar" question.

I said no.
Not really.

I don’t remember exactly what I said after that.

I just remember how I felt.

And I didn’t get the job.
At the time, that really stung.

Looking back on it though? It was defining.

Because I’ve never been in love with money.

I’ve always been in love with what money makes possible.

Security.
Freedom.
Options.

Time with people you care about.
Building something that lasts.

Does money matter? Of course.

But it’s never been the thing I love.

And over the years, I’ve noticed something:
The best clients I work with aren’t in love with money either.

They’re in love with building a firm that matters.

Creating stability for their family.

Designing a life that doesn’t feel like one long billing cycle.

On Valentine’s Day, that feels worth saying.
