Over the past few weeks, I’ve been heads down with my team preparing for the State of Logistics Innovation Summit.

As we sit here at T-1, I can’t help but pause and appreciate the depth of conversations that have shaped every session.
 
We’re unpacking the questions that matter as we head into 2026.
Where fulfillment is really headed as customer expectations rise, cost pressures intensify, and operational complexity becomes the norm.

Why AI cannot succeed without context, grounded data, and a clear operational problem to solve.

How distribution models are shifting: toward more flexible capacity, smarter orchestration, and networks built for volatility, not stability.

And what “intelligent logistics” actually means when you strip away the buzzwords and focus on measurable outcomes. Bringing these insights forward has been a privilege and a reminder that this industry is changing faster than most organizations are ready for.

Tomorrow’s discussions are just the beginning, but I hope the perspectives shared on stage (and the snippets we publish afterward) spark new thinking for the year ahead.

With how complex (and new-ish) shipping is, so many companies struggle with covering all the bases. Which is why we think everyone needs a Jennifer Katz.

Her role at Paccurate is pretty unique…(we literally created it for her).

She cut her teeth at Packsize, where she brought a solution engineering approach to deploying the on-demand packaging machinery. 

After that, she spent over a decade selling end of line automation. Which sounds like semi-niche expertise until you realize how much holistic operational knowledge you need to do that effectively.

It's time to admit that most “recyclable packaging” is BS…

A package can be technically “recyclable” and still end up in a landfill 99% of the time. All because your curbside program is highly limited by the capabilities of the local material recovery facility, and the nearest drop-off location for your styrofoam is 60 miles away.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴.

I’ve spent years in the packaging industry, and here's what I’ve seen: 

- Companies like Nestle wrestle with recycling systems that vary wildly across regions. The same "recyclable" bottle gets processed in Germany but trashed in dozens of other markets.

- You can innovate the perfect circular package, but if the recycling infrastructure doesn't exist where your products are sold, you've just created expensive garbage.

- Smart sustainability strategy requires focusing resources where infrastructure actually exists to close the loop, then building it where it doesn't.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Is your company designing for recycling systems that don't exist, or investing in infrastructure where it matters?

EPR legislation being passed by a dozen or so US states is going to make recycling and compliance complicated. And we’ll collectively spend a lot of time as an industry adapting.

But in the meantime, can we all agree to standardize curb-side recycling?

While I applaud packaging manufacturers for doing what they can to introduce technically recyclable materials, it often comes off as a public relations stunt more than an actual concern for the environment.

You can’t look at packaging (or any industry) in a silo.
That’s what struck me walking around Pack Expo this year. 

One booth near us was literally showcasing a cheese extrusion machine, right 
next to automation and conveyor tech that quietly dictate the minimum box sizes companies can use.

And the sheer scope is staggering. You actually have to take a shuttle bus just to get from one end of the conference to the other. Packaging is everywhere; it touches every part of our lives, yet most people never think about it. 

After all, everything comes in a box these days. 

Yes, we’re tired of traveling (it’s been an insane month). But we go into these events to get a complete view of how to scale our business. 

Early on, we thought it was all about math and our little point system.

But the reality hit us quickly. That’s why understanding the whole ecosystem matters (and that includes how cheese gets extruded).

I tell people all the time: packing is more complex than anyone wants to admit.

Sometimes it’s a company managing half a million unique SKUs.

Other times, it’s cold chain brands we work with, like Daily Harvest or Little Spoon, where every box has to arrive fresh and safe.

How many cold packs go in? What’s the right configuration? 

The stakes are high: get it wrong and someone could get sick.

Our first cold chain clients raised the bar. 

But through collaboration and leveraging our tech, we were able to figure out this solution at scale, not just for them, but for tons of customers to come.

I bought pasta sauce last week. It came in a paint can.

I bet you’ve noticed weird packaging ramping up everywhere.

Someone recently dubbed this trend "chaos packaging," when products are packaged in containers typically associated with completely different product categories (like sunscreen in a whipped cream can or tampons in ice cream tubs).

Despite the dramatic name, there's solid logic here:

𝗜𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗯𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Liquid Death water in beer-style cans reached a $1.4 billion valuation, largely because their packaging made people stop and look twice.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹. Squeeze bottles give better control over liquids, and alternative containers can be lighter and less breakable than traditional packaging.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗱. Brands like Vacation found that their whipped cream can sunscreen went viral with minimal traditional marketing; the packaging itself did the job.

"Chaos" might be overselling it. "Smart disruption" is probably more accurate.
