I founded and solo-preneured a computer vision hardware product from zero-to-one, which I started in college. Eventually I went full-time, raised funding and led a small team when I started selling to local governments in the Kansas City metro. I closed our first-ever enterprise customer- Grandview, MO at $18,000/year. I used that momentum to request referrals (who else do you know in city XYZ that might benefit from Sensory?) and introductions to other leads. Often, I would take a referral as a lead and chat with them together, in order to spark cross-city collaborative conversations with the end goal of piggybacking on the first contract. This avoided larger city quotes going 'RFQ/RFP' and avoided city council votes.  

I built the first 2 MVPs by hand using a Raspberry Pi 3b, GPS dongle, 4g usb modem and accelerometer. That gave me the data I needed when driving around a city, mapping the metadata for pavement surface defects and stress cracking. The data was phenomenally valuable, especially compared to expensive engineering consultants and ground-penetrating radar equipment. Data transfer was simple, converting our geopoints and Y-axis severity to a shapefile that was importable in roadway asset managers.

I wore a lot of hats while working on Sensory: 
- Hired and fired; managed vendors & contractors
- ML dataset collection and QA and transformation (to generate better training data variety and exponentially grow our training sets) 
- Algorithm development
- Enterprise sales; contract negotiation; pricing experiments 
- Web app development for road network visualizations 
- Data transfer RF stations at public work yards 
- Lots more!

It was by far the most fun and most challenging thing I've ever done. I shut it down when my runway was over.

Epiq

- Rewrote the on-call escalation flow to minimize sprint disruptions for our Sr Architects, resulting in 30% faster ticket resolution on P2-P4 issues
- Owned the SDLC for Epiq Discovery, including roadmap planning and execution
- Oversaw prioritization and the daily allocation of BA resources based on competing priorities

Ultimately, this contract ended after a devastating ransomware incident struck the on-prem. core product, with all 1,000 contractors being simultaneously laid off.

I led a cross-functional development team launching and integrating a two sided B2B automotive transportation marketplace. We had 3 months to get to market and be integrated with our existing iOS snd Android apps in addition to our Carrier TMS and Shipper TMS web apps.

A pivotal decision I made as PM on this product was to integrate our marketplace on mobile as an in-app browser rather than a native buildout. This meant in our 24/7 marketplace, where every minute counts, we didn’t have to wait for Apple or Google to approve app updates in order to ship bug fixes or enhancements- we could ship immediately and didn’t need mobile developers 100% dedicated to our team.

Seeding the marketplace (supply and demand) had started years ago, so I’m a vocal proponent of SaaS-enabled marketplaces as a strategy for the cold-start problem.

I was hired to own Super Dispatch’s first ever hardware product- and electronic logging device- which integrated with our mobile applications. Also know as ELD, these hardware devices had to legally be used by truckers instead of paper hours of service records.

To get our product to market, we had three challenges:
(1) Getting integrated with our existing mobile apps
(2) Compatibility with iOS and Android over Bluetooth/BLE
(3) Legal compliance and certification with the Department of Transportation’s FMCSA

It’s honestly quite the long story. Some highlights:
- I personally called every published employee contact number within the FMCSA’s newly established ELD department after our (“10 day”) certification process was at a standstill, blocking us from launch. Only my annoyingly professional persistence won out.
- My interview assignment before I got the job was to get the ELD working in trucks. I delivered my QA assessment, testing across light/medium duty vehicles, Android and iOS on the following Monday with a complete policy analysis of how similar regulations in the EU affected vendors for regulated technology products in commercial vehicles.
- I led our team of 6 through a complete hardware pivot
- I personally sold the first 250 hardware devices with monthly subscriptions, writing the sales playbook and training support.
- I worked with our office admin to handle logistics, packaging, returns and quick start guides and had some beautiful boxes, visiting USPS quite often :)
- Fielded several angry calls from DOT officers and state troopers
- I’m sure there’s more, it was a really busy year before I ultimately made the recommendation to our leadership team to EOL the devices after some existential defects were found in the firmware that made our continued compliance questionable (and a big liability).

10 years ago, I built an AI company from scratch and sold my first MVP for $18,000/year.

Ever since, I've obsessed over AI.

I believed back in 2015 that if I didn't master AI- fast- I would get left behind.

Since that first MVP, I’ve helped launch, grow and scale SaaS, about 16 unique products. Today, I’m spending 20% of my time consulting and the other 80% creating AI tools.

Today, Ive found there’s a disturbing shortcoming:

Too many acronyms. All jargon. BS hype and promises.

So, I’ve decided to be that person for a few clients.

Definitively explaining AI in simple terms is a challenge in empathy and communication. How would you describe AI to a grandmother who had never gotten home internet?

My favorite client said:
"This was the first time I've ever had AI explained to me in a way I ACTUALLY understood."

That makes me proud. Non-technical people *can figure this out.*
