Today, if you're not the answer AI trusts, you might as well be invisible.

We analyzed 200+ LLM citations across 10 industries. Only 4 factors mattered and drives ranking in LLMs: 

1. Structure decides inclusion

- Clear headings.
- Short, scannable text.

If an LLM can extract the answer cleanly, you are eligible.

If it has to interpret, you disappear.

We worked with a dev tools startup that was building a solid product but wasn’t getting discovered.

Over a 3.5-month engagement that concluded in December, we achieved:

→ 434K impressions

→ 5K visitors

→ 97 LLM referral sessions in December alone

That traffic came from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude.

Most founders still assume classic SEO covers this.

It doesn’t anymore.

LLMs are quickly becoming a parallel search layer.

If your content isn’t structured for citations, it simply doesn’t show up when buyers ask AI for answers.

Where the client was stuck:

- Strong product, almost no organic visibility
- No LLM-driven traffic at all
- Competitors owning comparison and integration queries

So we rebuilt the content engine from the ground up.

What we focused on:

-> High-intent integration pages answering real developer questions like “How do I connect X with Y”
-> Deep technical guides, especially around security and implementation, that started compounding quickly
-> SDK and framework-specific content for people actively building
-> Competitor alternative pages to capture comparison and switch intent
-> Consistent editorial output that earned links without link-building campaigns

What changed as a result:

- Impressions went from near zero to 434K
- 5K clicks to the site
- 97 LLM referral sessions in one month
- Domain authority moved from 23 to 52
- 192 new backlinks came in organically

This isn’t a trend to watch. It’s already in motion.

The window is still open, but it’s closing fast as more SaaS and dev tools teams figure this out.

What looks like a content or SEO problem is usually something else.

Each AI platform is designed to reward different signals. Treating them as interchangeable guarantees uneven results.

𝟮. 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺-𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰:
→ One system rewards being cited often across discussions.
→ Another rewards earned media and institutional credibility.
→ Another rewards a single, comprehensive source it can trust deeply.

𝟯. 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲:
What works on one platform can be irrelevant on another.
→ Fresh updates.
→ Reference density.
→ Earned mentions.
→ Technical depth.
Each matters. Just not everywhere.
There is no checklist that works across all AI platforms.

𝟰. 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰:
Some interfaces push users outward through visible citations.
Others fully satisfy intent inside the answer.

Being present does not mean being visited.

That’s why the strategy has to change.

So the model I use now is simple.

-> Design for 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 when discovery is retrieval-driven.
-> Design for 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 when authority compounds.
-> Design for 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 when permanence matters.

Different systems. Different goals. Different content.

There is no single “AI SEO” playbook.

Real strategy starts with clarity about 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆.
