Integrating enterprise AI agents can be hard.
These 5 layers make it easier: 

1\ Smart business layer

Treat agents as a system actor, with clear roles, responsibilities & interaction boundaries like any other microservice

Meet users where they work by integrating the agent into existing enterprise surfaces (e.g. CRM, ERP, collaboration tools)

2\ Core transaction layer

Use MCP to connect agents through existing integration backbones (e.g. service meshes, API gateways) for “free” standard logging & security

3\ AI layer

Integrate agents via stable & well-defined MCP servers for APIs, events & service calls, with lifecycle management

Design for asynchrony & retries, using events/queues for hand-off & resumption and “once-only” semantics for retries

4\ Data layer

Ensure agents act on behalf of a user or service identity, using existing Identity & Access Management (IAM) to never bypass access controls

5\ Infrastructure & cloud layer

Let middleware abstract complexity, and only expose domain-level actions to agents, e.g. “submit expense report”
