A philosopher on love, grief, and what it costs to become who you actually are.

I am a former international athlete and coach. I live in Prague with my wife and four children.

I spent 17 years coaching leaders and athletes before realising most of them weren’t tired from the work. They were tired from defending.

I was one of them.

After my father died when I was 16, I learned to be strong by hiding everything that felt weak. By 42, the armour I’d built was crushing me.

I moved to Prague. Started walking by the Vltava River. Began writing short dialogues between three voices: the Stag, the Rat, the Wren, next to the Vltava River.

These stories became the language I wished I’d had at 16. And still need now.

I work with leaders who recognise themselves in the Stag—founders, executives, leaders who are exhausted from performing strength. 

Some travel to Prague to walk by the River with me for a day. Others join my workshop, Presence Under Pressure.

I am the author of four books on leadership and living well.

Someone asked why I talk about love, grief, and leadership now and not sports parallels.

I said: Did you watch the Olympic hockey final?

Not the goals.

Not the medal.

The moment they brought Johnny Gaudreau’s children onto the ice.

A father who should have been there, wasn’t.

And twenty grown men, who had trained their whole lives to be hard, to be fast, to feel nothing that slows you down, stood on that ice and wept.

Because you can’t skate away from grief.
You can’t outperform it.

You can only carry it, together, and dedicate what you do to something larger than the scoreboard.

They didn’t win gold for themselves.
They won it for him.

For his wife. For those kids in skates too big.

Every time they hit the ice, they carried the weight of his absence like a second jersey.

That is what playing for a higher purpose actually means.

Not a slogan on a wall.

That’s not a sports story.

That’s what love looks like when it has nowhere left to hide.
