The top 5 things I'd do to improve a subscription program with little time.

I'll list them by potential impact for your business:

1. Default to subscribe and save with some simple design changes to make the subscription option more prominent.

Impact: 30-40% opt-in rate (minimum) - more subscribers coming in

2. Upsell to subscriptions in the cart. Simple, straightforward, but effective.

Impact: additional 10% improvement to opt-in rate

3. Make the billing reminder feel like a value reminder than a transaction. Show them why they subscribed in the first place.

Impact: lower monthly churn 10-15%

4. Update the cancel flow with better copy, stronger offers to stay, and a founder video on the splash screen when someone first cancels.

Impact: minimum 10% improvement on your cancel save rate

5. Make the onboarding flow feel educational and welcoming. There are so many questions people have; show them how you're different and how they can be successful with you.

Impact: lower MoM churn by 5-10%

I left an AI event yesterday both impressed… and a little unsettled.

At the Salt Lake City The AI Collective presentation on Claude Code for Marketers, the speaker built an app in 20 minutes that could automatically post across multiple social platforms several times a day.

Twenty minutes.

I also heard about:
– A writer hired to produce 4,000 words a week across channels
– A company publishing 100 articles a week to boost SEO
– Systems that can now generate content almost endlessly

And honestly? The technology is amazing.

It’s efficient.
It’s fast.
It removes friction.

But on the drive home, I kept thinking:

What happens when everyone can publish at this speed?

When every brand can post daily.
When every company can flood search.
When content is no longer scarce — just constant.

We used to fight for visibility.

Now I wonder if we’ll be fighting for attention.

AI can absolutely make our work better and faster. I’m not anti-technology. But it doesn’t answer the harder questions:

What should you be known for?
What do you actually stand for?
What’s worth saying — and what’s just filling space?

Because if everyone can produce more,
the advantage won’t be volume.

It’ll be clarity.

I’m curious how others are thinking about this.

Are we about to create more value —
or just more noise?

When you think of a brand, what comes to mind instantly?

That first thought — that’s association.

Association creates meaning.
Meaning creates reputation.

When someone doesn’t know your brand,
they connect it to something they already understand.

When someone hears Patagonia, they think environmental responsibility.
When someone hears Nike, they think performance.

That didn’t happen by accident.
That’s years of intentional association.

If you don’t define that meaning, the market will.

And today, it happens quickly.

A scan of your profile.
Your company pages.
Your digital footprint.

In minutes, people decide where to place you.

Strategic or tactical.
Premium or interchangeable.

You may not be in the room.
But the association already is.

So here’s the real work:
What do you want your name to stand next for?

Ethical question.

I found a scarf at the rec center after skating.

If you know me, you know I love scarves. This one?
Beautiful plaid wool. Exceptional quality. Serious brand equity.

The kind I don’t own. The kind I wouldn’t casually buy.

For a second, I thought:
Do I keep it?

Then I imagined losing it myself. That feeling.

So I brought it to the front desk — and yes,
I explained what it was and why it shouldn’t just be thrown
into a lost-and-found bin.

Because here’s what struck me:

I’m not their customer.
But I treated it differently.

That’s brand equity.

In B2B, strong branding does the same thing.

It changes behavior before the contract.
It makes people take your pricing seriously.
It makes your proposal feel valuable before it’s even opened.

When your brand is clear and positioned well,
you’re not handled like everyone else.

You’re handled with care.

What would you have done?

My phone slipped out of my hand yesterday.

You know that moment…

when time slows down and you’re watching it fall in slow motion,
silently negotiating with gravity?

“Please don’t land face down.”

While it was falling, another thought crossed my mind:

“If this breaks… I already know which phone I’m buying.”

Not which brands to research.
Not which reviews to read.

Just which model.

Pro?
Regular?
More storage or a better camera?

The brand decision had already been made.

I’ve seen their ads.
I’ve heard people talk about it.
I’ve seen the product everywhere.

Yes — their marketing got my attention.
But their brand earned the shortcut in my brain.

Marketing gets you seen.
Branding makes you the default choice.

Good news: my phone survived!

But it left me wondering:
When your customers face a real decision…
are you the brand they compare — or the one they default to?
