This week on The State Of Mind Newsletter, I found myself thinking about why so many financial products feel secure but still stressful to use.

In fintech, trust is treated as everything.
And in many ways, it should be.

Money carries risk.
Mistakes have consequences.
Systems need to be reliable.

Over time, trust in finance has come to mean one thing.
Protection.

But when trust is built only around control, something subtle breaks.

This edition explores why clarity and credibility matter more than clever interfaces.

1. When Trust Becomes Heavy
Many financial products are technically safe.
Yet every action feels serious.
Users hesitate even when they know what they want to do.

Nothing is broken.
But nothing feels easy either.

2. How Control Replaces Confidence
In finance, rules come first.
Then behavior.
Then experience.

Trust slowly turns into something enforced instead of earned.
Ease fades away, even though it plays a huge role in how safe people feel when they act.

3. Why Stress Feels Acceptable
Discomfort is often mistaken for seriousness.

“If it feels strict, it must be secure.”

Over time, teams stop questioning whether stress is necessary at all.

4. What’s Really Missing

Why design systems are crucial for startups growing fast, or it can become a $50,000 mistake

Scaling a tech company is thrilling.
But rapid growth without a solid design system?
That’s a recipe for chaos.

Many startups neglect design systems, especially when the pressure is on to ship features quickly.
This oversight leads to inconsistencies, inefficiencies, and a fractured user experience.
Ultimately, it costs more time and money to fix later.

Here’s why design systems are essential:

1. Consistency
// Maintain a unified look and feel across all products.
// Consistency builds brand recognition and user trust.

2. Efficiency
// Reusable components save time and reduce redundant work.
// Designers can focus on solving unique problems instead of reinventing the wheel.

3. Scalability
// Onboarding new designers becomes seamless with clear guidelines and documentation.
// The design system acts as a single source of truth, ensuring everyone is aligned.

4. Cost Savings
// Reduce design debt and avoid costly redesigns.
// A well-maintained system minimizes errors and rework.

Consider these successful design systems:

- Atlassian’s Design System: Known for its comprehensive documentation and focus on collaboration.
- Shopify’s Polaris: Emphasizes accessibility and a consistent merchant experience.
- IBM’s Carbon: Offers a robust set of components and clear usage guidelines.

When you run a small agency or product team, the instinct is to hire for today’s needs.

It feels safe.
It feels practical.

But it’s also the easiest way to limit your next phase.

I’ve done this before - brought someone in because the workload was heavy or a project looked urgent.
They were good for the moment, but not built for the pace or complexity that showed up a few months later.

And then you end up doing two jobs: managing the business and managing the gap they can’t fill.

That’s when it hits you:
Most hiring mistakes are about misalignment with where you’re going next and not just skills.

Teams that scale well do one thing consistently -
they hire people who can stretch, not just execute.
 
People who can handle ambiguity.
People who don’t freeze when things change.
People who think beyond their task list.

It sounds obvious, but when you’re small, it’s hard.
You’re always fighting the present.
But the present isn’t where growth comes from.

If you want to build a strong team, hire for the chapter ahead - not the page you’re on.

The business grows into the people you bring in.
Not the other way around.

This is how real brands get built.

Owning the hard calls, communicating early, and choosing trust over shortcuts.

Move, feel and live better with The Stack

One of the craziest things that happened to me last year was us running out of stock of our bestseller for almost 2 months. 

Deep Rest, which is our magnesium bisglycinate supplement, sold way faster than we expected. Aaaand while we were trying to keep up with this pace, we.. couldn’t. At least for a solid minute there.  

We source our raw material from the States. In December, a large shipment  that arrived wasn’t the grade we use. It didn’t meet our quality standards. Turned out to be a clerical error.

By then, preorders were already in. Customers were waiting. 

We were really stressed. But we also knew what the right decision was. 

We cancelled production. We emailed our customers, and we issued refunds.

And ofc while I re-ordered the material and learnt too many expensive lessons about supply chain management, I still slept okay at night. 
Because the operational decision wasn't the most important - it was to prioritise the promise we make to you. To our families and ourselves. 

And customers understood. Their messages that came back reminded me of something important - trust isn’t built by being perfect or flawless, it’s built by choosing integrity and transparency when it’s inconvenient and uncomfortable.
Cutting corners would’ve been easier. But I didn’t build The Stack to be easy.
