Sabrina Carpenter's music is bubble gum smut.
But there's a story in her evolution:


My son started watching the Disney channel show "Girl Meets World."

[only after finishing the glory of "Boy Meets World."]

The Sabrina Carpenter in the show...
...is a far cry from her persona now.

Some have accused her of using "Lolita imagery."
[a phrase as evocative as it is provocative.]

Sabrina's response:

"It's not my fault I got a job at 12 and you won't let me evolve."

I read that and said,
"Well, sh!t, she's right."

When some people look at you,
they'll always see what you were.
Not what you are.

Some people still see me as the weirdo minister's kid.
Others see the social worker who quit.
Or the Uber-driving SaaS sales guy.

I'll never be Sabrina's target market.
But I'm not going to judge how she's evolved.
[well, not anymore.]

We all evolve.
Our stories are allowed to add new chapters.
Even bubble gum smutty ones.

She said, "Sure."

So Austin it is.

Uber to the airport, check.
TSA PreCheck...check. [hopefully.]

I'm staying in the heart of the city.
Give me your food recs.

Writing rules for LinkedIn:


-Short sentences only.
-But not too many because people will think it's AI.
-The hook is everything.
-The visual is everything.
-The CTA is everything.
-Stay away from politics and religion.
-Political and religious posts get you tons of impressions.
-Always end with a CTA.
-The algorithm will punish your CTA post.
-Never use links in your post.
-Use links in your post if you want to drive traffic.
-Send 1,000 DMs a day.
-Never pitch slap.
-Make sure you're the first comment on the influencer's post every day.
-Never use adverbs.
-Never use em dashes.
-Use all the adverbs and em dashes.
-Be authentic.
-Do whatever it takes to get impressions.

Glad we could get that all sorted.
Back to business, folks.

One word converts more of my prospects than any other:
[fellow freelance writers, pay attention]


In 2023, my close rate dropped to 18%.
When I started using this word in 2024, it rose to 80%.
[yes, I did the actual math.]

The one word wasn't:
-sales
-authority
-synergy
[good lord, definitely not "synergy"]

The one word is "storytelling."

That's it.

Because that's the biggest fear a prospect has:

"Does my story have value?"

Many of my clients have told me that's why they picked me.

Caveat:
It's not enough to say, "I love stories" in your pitch.

Anyone can say that.

But can you SHOW prospects that you know the craft of storytelling?

Do you use stories in your Zoom pitch?
Do you use stories in your LinkedIn posts?
Do you use stats to tell stories? (i.e. results, accolades, etc.)

Give it a try in your next prospect call.

The best advice my mom ever gave me:
"Don't play notes. Make music."


I was a certified band nerd.
Second chair trumpet.

Forget first chair.
That's when you have to play solos.

But I was expected to compete in UIL Solo & Ensemble every year.

Ensemble, piece of cake.
You've got your buddies there.

Playing solo?
Terrifying.

My mom was always my accompaniment, though.
[she's an excellent pianist.]

One year, I was really nervous before going in to face the judges.

Anxious I'd miss a note.
And then more notes.
And then the world would explode like Alderaan.

"Don't play notes," she said.
"Make music."

Suddenly, I wasn't as nervous.
Because there's a huge difference between playing notes and making music.

You can miss some notes and still make music.

AI knows how to play notes.
It doesn't know how to make music.

Only humans can.

34 years later, he won 3 Oscars.


In 1992, Paul Thomas Anderson was a new student at NYU’s film school.

In the first lecture, the professor said that “anyone who wants to make a film like Terminator 2 should leave immediately.”

So he did.

He took his tuition money and self-funded his first feature film.

5 years later, he scored his first Oscar nomination.

Last night, he finally won.

Overnight success doesn’t exist.

But something tells me that if he’d stayed in film school, it would’ve never happened.

No one else gets to define “success” for you.
The best learning comes through doing.

Last week, I cost myself $13,750.
One email would have saved me.


Recently, I was approached by a prospect. 
They were already under contract with a publisher.
But they asked me for a proposal to work together.

Since I know people at the publisher, I should have reached out to them first to say, "Hey, what's your process for this situation?"

Did I do that?
Nah.

Sometimes I err too far on the "ask for forgiveness, not permission" side of business.

So I put together my quote.
The prospect was super-receptive.
Then we reached out to the publisher to get their input.

Turns out they have a whole process for incorporating contractor fees for existing contracts.

Oops.

Rookie mistake on my part.
Something I should've known.

Which meant that I had to reduce my fee by $13,750.
Talk about a "phantom tax..."

I could have walked away.
But I accepted the reduction because:

[a] I really like the client and I'm in a phase where liking my clients is often more important than $$$.

[b] The oversight was totally my fault, and I'm a big believer in  doing what's necessary to correct my mistakes.

Communication = $$$

True in marketing.
True in contracts.
True in customer relations.
True in staying out of trouble with my wife.

One email would have put that $13,750 back in my pocket.
[heck, that's a Disney trip right there.]

Lesson learned.
Still stings a little.
So you can bet I won't be making this mistake again.

Also my favorite Neeson:
Liam Neeson. (a.k.a. Qui-Gon Jinn)

Bono taught me emotion.
Lewis taught me reason + religion.
Neeson taught me a special set of skills.

I'm only 1% Irish.
But I lean into that 1% HARD.

I'm bad at sending invoices.
[though I've improved because I gotta pay them money bills.]

I'm bad at tracking leads.
[my CRM runs on vibes.]

I'm really bad at prospect outreach.
[i still have cold calling trauma from SaaS sales.]

I'm bad at working when I'm "off the clock."
[wait, what clock?]

And yet, in 2025 I made 2.7x the most I ever made in my last W2 job.

If everything you share is about a win,
then you've got a relatability problem.


Here are some losses I don't discuss enough:
-2014: Sold our first business for about 35% of its true value.
-2016: My outside sales business tanked my finances + life.
-2017: Spent months and $1K developing an app but had to shut it down after only 3 months.
-2020: The movie I was hired to write got canceled.
-2021: My first big ghostwriting contract decided to go on hiatus and never published.
-2025: My group book coaching program totally tanked.

Talking about wins is super fun.

But if no one can relate to you, your stories/knowledge won’t land.

Share more losses.
It's good for the heart.
And good for humanity.
