ASM has been appointed as a strategic partner by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) to study the development of a Business Model for the Establishment of a Non-Radioactive Rare Earths (NR-REE) Industry In Malaysia. The study aspires to realise the potential economic value of the NR-REE industry which will be used as a guide to developing a holistic and comprehensive plan by the Malaysian Government at the federal and state levels. The 6 -months study commenced in August 2022, chaired by Academician Datuk Fateh Chand FASc. Ts. Raja Shazrin Shah was appointed as a Working Group Member for the study of developing a Business Model for the Establishment of a Non-Radioactive Rare Earths (NR-REE) Industry In Malaysia in Working Group 4: Environment, Social and Governance (ESG). WG4 is tasked to focus on the ESG issues related to the NR-REE industry in Malaysia. The project duration is 6 months starting August 2022.

Raja Shazrin Shah is a Chemical Engineer and professional sustainability consultant whose areas of expertise revolve around multidisciplinary and cross-cutting aspects of environment, technology, and economy. He has extensive experience in fundamental and applied engineering research associated with waste management, wastewater treatment, sustainability, cleaner production, and greenhouse gas inventories. He has published articles in more than 12 impactful peer-reviewed journals on waste management, wastewater treatment, and chemical engineering which are of recent scientific interest to the research community. He has established strong collaborations with governmental, private, and international agencies such as the Department of Environment Malaysia, Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN), Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and academic institutions such as University of Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for various research collaborations. These strategic collaborations have enabled him to apply his research knowledge and discoveries to various stakeholders for the development of technical specifications, standards, guidelines, and national regulations. I’ve always believed that one of the most common barriers to progress in sustainability is terminology. We often see ESG, CSR, and Sustainability used interchangeably yet they serve different purposes, different audiences, and drive different outcomes. This visual captures the relationship between the three concepts beautifully. 👏 ♻️ 

𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 is the big picture, the overarching goal. It’s the long-term balance of environmental protection, social equity, and economic stability for society as a whole. It’s broad, systemic, and applies to individuals, organisations, and governments. At its core, sustainability asks: How do we operate within planetary boundaries while ensuring people and economies can thrive?

𝗖𝗦𝗥 (𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆) sits within that circle. CSR is about a company’s culture and values, the voluntary actions businesses take to give back to society, go beyond profits, and demonstrate responsibility toward people and the environment. CSR has been around since the 1950s, rooted in philanthropy, community engagement, and ethical behaviour.

𝗘𝗦𝗚 (𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹, 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 & 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲) is the most structured and investor-facing layer. ESG translates sustainability into measurable indicators data, KPIs, governance processes, risk assessments, and disclosures. It is how organisations demonstrate performance, manage risks, and attract capital. ESG has become central to investment decisions, reporting frameworks, due diligence, and regulatory compliance.

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴:
 ▪️  CSR is about values. ESG is about performance. Sustainability is about long-term survival.
 ▪️  ESG turns sustainability into something investors, regulators, and boards can evaluate.
 ▪️  CSR builds trust. ESG builds accountability. Sustainability builds resilience.
 ▪️  Strong organisations integrate all three culture (CSR), data and governance (ESG), and long-term strategy (Sustainability).
 ▪️  The future belongs to companies that understand how these layers reinforce each other.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀?
Boards, CEOs, ESG teams, sustainability practitioners, investors, policymakers, and anyone shaping strategy. 𝟭𝟱 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

I came across a document recently that really resonated with me not because it was technical or data-heavy, but because it captured something we often overlook in climate and sustainability conversations: the human skills we urgently need to navigate this moment in history.

The 15 Green Skills framework by AimHi Earth is a reminder that solving the climate-nature emergency isn’t just about technology, science, or policy. It’s also about mindset, culture, and the way we relate to each other and to nature. It frames “green skills” as much broader than we typically imagine spanning values, emotional intelligence, systems thinking, cultural awareness, creativity, and even storytelling.

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲:
✅ We can’t build a regenerative future without learning how nature works and how we fit inside those systems.
✅ Scientific literacy, systems thinking, and the ability to question “normal” assumptions are becoming foundational skills for every profession.
✅ The document highlights just how crucial interpersonal kindness, collaboration, and cultural understanding are something we rarely emphasise in ESG.
✅ Technical skills matter, but the transition also depends on our ability to communicate, connect, imagine, and rethink old ways of operating.
✅ Green skills aren’t niche they’re universal. And they need to be embedded across education, organisations, and society.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀?
Educators, sustainability teams, leaders shaping workforce development, policymakers, and anyone preparing their organisation for a world that will demand very different capabilities than the ones we were trained for. This is the kind of thinking that helps teams build resilience, creativity, and the ability to respond to increasingly complex challenges.

For me, the biggest reminder is this: the transition we’re all working toward isn’t only about carbon or compliance. It’s about people. And the more we invest in these human-centred green skills, the stronger our collective ability to shape a fairer, healthier, more sustainable future.
