I started building my Fractional CFO firm, KFE Solutions, 8+ years ago.

On my journey, I looked for a mentor that could show me how to build a firm that right way.

I looked for a community of other impact-drive Fractional CFOs that could support me and encourage me.

I couldn't find either.

Today, I have a firm and a team that I'm proud of. I've made it my mission to help firm owners that are coming after me avoid the mistakes I made so they can build the firm of their dreams faster.

So that begs the question: 

Is the Fractional CFO industry saturated or is there still room to grow?

Recently I met with a client who had a frustrated salesman.


Not because they couldn’t sell…

but because they had no clarity on their numbers.

They didn’t know:

👉 How much profit each deal was bringing in
👉 What their commissions would look like
👉 Which products were actually worth pushing
👉 How close they were to hitting their targets

Clean Books Shouldn't Be The Goal!



Good bookkeeping is important.

But clean books alone don’t grow a business.

What really matters is what you do with the numbers:

📌 Do they help you decide what to cut?
📌Do they help you see which services are worth more?
📌Do they help you plan the next 3–6 months?

Numbers are a tool.

 They shouldn’t just be “ready for the accountant” — they should be working for you every week.

💥 It’s crazy how the numbers always reveal what you missed.



Last week I was reviewing a client’s books, and everything looked fine at first.

But one small number kept bothering me — their receivables jumped by 18%.

Nothing dramatic… but it didn’t match the “we’re doing great” feeling they had.

We dug in and found a pattern:

A few clients that were always on time slowly started paying later and later.
Small changes add up fast.

That’s why I always say: your numbers tell the story before the problems show up.

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my business….



“Is taking on a competent bookkeeper who not just enters transactions and pays bills, but someone who’s actually invested in my business.”

That’s what a client told me yesterday when we met.

He had been running his books himself for many years, and they were actually perfect and clean when I took them over.

He didn’t outsource it because he didn’t know how to do it himself - he wanted someone to manage the business's financials in a better way. That was what he was looking for.

There are a ton of people out there selling bookkeeping services, but many of them are not invested in the business's success. 

Find someone who can help you with cash flow management and understands and explains your numbers to you.

(True story: a bookkeeper reached out to me a few weeks ago, asking how to check something in QB when I told him to run a P&L and filter it, he asked me, “A P what?”)

My client has really tight margins, but we're not focusing on increasing them.


One of my clients has really tight margins, which is usually not healthy for a typical business, but we're not focusing on increasing them at all.

Why?

Because he was able to run his 5MM business with a very tight and small overhead, so he still gets a healthy 15% net profit margin.

He figured out, with strong systems, how to have his overhead so small.

And this gives him a competitive advantage over his competitors who have to ask higher prices than them.

Increasing margins is the easiest thing to tell a client to do, but if you can figure it out without it, it's not always the best decision.

🔍 A tiny mistake was costing this client $1,250 every single month.



I was reviewing a client’s books and spotted a small charge that didn’t look right.

Turns out they were paying for two software subscriptions — the same one — under different emails.

Nobody noticed because it was “only” a few hundred dollars each time.

 But monthly? It added up to $1,250.

 Yearly? Over $15,000 gone.

Many businesses lose money not from big mistakes — but from small ones they never catch.

Not every new client or project is good for your business.


Some pay late.
Some argue on price.
Some take all your time and give very little profit.

 Sometimes the best decision you can make is to say “no” — and make space for better clients who respect your work and your terms.

📅A Simple Way to Sleep Better About Cash



One simple rule I like:

Have enough cash to cover at least one full month of your main expenses.

Not as a dream. As a goal to work toward.

You don’t get there in one jump. You build it slowly:

	•	Cut what you don’t use.
	•	Improve collections.
	•	Raise prices where you’re undercharging.

Little by little, that buffer grows.

And when it’s there, you feel it — less panic, more control.

💰 Ever have a month where everything is busy… but the cash still feels tight?



 It happens more often than you think.

The work is coming in, the phones are busy, the clients are happy —
 but the bank balance doesn’t match the effort.

That’s usually a sign of timing, not trouble.

Your cash might be:

👉 Sitting in receivables
👉Waiting on slow-paying clients
👉Tied up in inventory
👉Going out faster than it’s coming in

The business is fine — the timing isn’t.

Once you track where your cash actually goes, the whole picture becomes clear.

 And once you see it, you can fix it.

If you're profitable on paper but still struggling with cash flow, this post is for you.

When cash feels tight, most people think something went wrong.

 But usually, nothing “went wrong.”

The cash just moved somewhere else.

It went to:
👉 Inventory
👉Payroll
👉Vendors
👉Taxes
👉Loans
👉Equipment
👉Clients who haven’t paid yet

Cash flow only feels stressful when you don’t know where the money went.

 Once you track it, everything makes sense — and the stress drops fast.

Obviously, once you know where your cash is sitting, it's much easier to take action on it.
