The "Why do you want to leave?" question isn't a trap.
It's your moment to show you're not running FROM something. 

You're running TO something.

Most people blow this question because they focus on what's wrong with their current role.

The frustrations. The limitations. The politics.

Or they provide a vague, uninspiring answer that leaves the interviewer thinking that they are talking to someone who is failing in their current role. 

But here's what hiring managers actually want to hear: Where you're going.

1️⃣ You're ready for MORE.

What bigger problems, scope, or leadership are you ready for?

2️⃣ What's PULLING you?

What about this company, mission, industry, or role attracts you? 
What do you want to do more of?

Try this framework: 

Start with what you've accomplished. 
"I've successfully led three major product launches and built a team from 5 to 15 people."
Then show your readiness for growth. "I'm excited about the opportunity to scale operations at a larger organization and take on P&L responsibility."

Multi-pronged answers win:
"I'm looking for three things: the chance to work in fintech, lead a larger team, and contribute to a company's international expansion."

Remember this:

As a passive candidate, you hold more cards.

You're not desperate.
You're selective.

You're not escaping.
You're elevating and/or pivoting.

The hiring managers see that you have confidence that comes from knowing exactly what you want next.

The best networking moments aren't in your calendar.

They live in random thoughts you usually ignore.

Last week, I thought of a business acquaintance. We hadn't spoke in two years. The same afternoon, he calls me. 

Recently, a newly landed client reached out to share how well her new role was going two months ina. 
... I was going to check in on her the same day. 

These 'coincidences' are not random.

They're your network intuition working its magic.

Here’s how to turn these moments into meaningful connections and relationship builders:

1. Act immediately
→ Don't just log "i'll reach out later" and forget: send it within 5 mins
→ Quick voice note > Perfect email that never gets sent

2. Share the trigger
→ "I saw an article on AI ethics that immediately reminded me of our chats"
→ "That project you led last year popped into my mind when mentoring on something similar"

3. Make it easy to respond
→ End with a specific question
→ Offer a clear next step (15-min catch-up call?)

4. Create connection rituals
→ "Random reach-out Thursdays" to 2 people/week
→ Use your commute time for voice messages
→ My buddy makes calls to friends when he's walking the dog
→ Block an hour every second Thursday AM for a breakfast or coffee meeting and fill it

5. Add value first
→ Share a resource that's relevant to their current focus
→ Make an introduction they'd appreciate

6. Turn digital into real
→ When travelling, check who's local and grab coffee
→ Convert online conversations into real-world meetups

The strongest networks aren't built systematically (although you should do that too). 

They're built on serendipitous, organic moments of genuine connection.

Your network intuition is trying to help you.

Bison Transport Inc.

As part of my last role at Bison, I oversaw BC and PNW city operations with dotted line to the shop, cross-dock, highway operations, and LTL operations, including 7 office staff, 60 drivers, 5 shunt drivers, and 12 tractors. Administering a $18M budget, I actively engaged with clients including multiple Fortune 500 companies and oversaw the operations of 7 yards cross BC, participating in negotiations with landlords, security and property management. Moreover, I generated $80k in new business by developing key relationships to tap into a new vertical, all while optimizing equipment usage and fostering driver accountability to consistently increase efficiency, driving $42k in annual savings.

✶ Created a high-performing shunt team through effective collaboration with the business, leveraging team loops to streamline communication sources, managing performance to increase business value, and providing support to address issues and mitigate risk. 
✶ Drove market share growth in the Pacific region by developing new business verticals and maximizing growth within existing business.
✶ Oversaw the H&S committee, reinforcing controls and ensuring ongoing adherence to established policies and expectations. 
✶ Held coaching conversations with ambitious individuals who were eager to grow, facilitating paths toward future leadership roles.

Director of Pacific Region

I managed Western Highway operations encompassing 60 operations staff overseeing 400+ drivers and owner-operators who drove 48M miles across Canada and 48 US states each year. I was responsible for planning driver in BC, AB, PNW, and California with the mandate of continuously increasing the number of miles per truck, all while maintaining optimal service levels and driver satisfaction and retention. Moreover, I maximized a $96M Budget, drove business continuity through 3 system upgrades, flood challenges, and freight fluctuations, grew the number of teams from 5 to 32, and merged them inot a sigle fleet to double monthly liles per truck to 22,500.

✶ Worked alongside company President, executive members, and 2 regional peers as part of a Driver Governance Committee that strategized pay increases for drivers and owner-operators to cost-effectively maintain competitive edge in the market.
✶ Oversaw the maintenance of 200+ tractors and ensured Bison’s 3 western terminals and 7 yards met ever-evolving operational needs.
✶ Created 10 truck shares consisting of 5 trucks and 8 drivers, resulting in an additional 1,800 miles per truck per month in utilization.
✶ Developed 30+ schedules to attract and retain drivers running between BC and Alberta, filling all 10 open positions in a difficult market.
✶ Led a national Hoshin team to successfully improve satisfaction and increase retention of 100+ drivers across Canada and the US.

Director, West Highway and Pacific Regional Operations

As Director of Regional Operations, I led city operations across Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Langley, and Vancouver Island with a constant focus on controlling cost and maintaining high service levels, all while managing night operations in the western region and supporting rapid business growth. I managed a $15M budget, 22 office staff, 215+ drivers, shunting operations for major customers, and cross-dock operations, growing city operations by 50% through increasing customer demand while improving profitiablility by reducing staff overtime.

✶ Drove $225k in annual savings by shutting down unprofitable Vancouver Island operations following a comprehensive analysis, before building an alliance with an external partner to share barge costs, achieving higher volume and reducing rates by 13%.
✶ Established a tractor utilization measurement process to increase use of company tractors by 20%+ in all cities, reducing cost.
✶ Created an app that helped cartage drivers obtain plans, update the system for traceability, and track their pay to better control costs.
✶ Played an instrumental role in purchasing a terminal in Langley, sharing deep knowledge of both the area and customer location.

Director, Regional Operations

In this role, I developed a high-performing team of 100+ drivers and owner-operators and 18 operations staff in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, adjusting Owner-Operator Hours in Edmonton and Langley to ensure adherence to legislation and contract requirements. 

✶ Optimized trailer utilization to reduce reliance on rentals by ensuring adequate research and planning was conducted daily.
✶ Aligned processes across all 3 cities to foster seamless collaboration and facilitate management of staffing challenges. 
✶ Created a carrier scorecard based on rates and service to optimize decision-making and reduce spend by minimizing cartage usage.

I oversaw city operations consisting of 4 office staff managing 35+ drivers and owner operators in Calgary, while working alongside departments across our network to improve both internal and external customer experience.
