Early in my career, I sat in a boardroom thick with pressure.

There is something magical about a room full of women who refuse to dim their light.

But the real story looked very different.

I was told my accent would hold me back.
At the time, I believed them.

I was an African immigrant kid trying to figure out where I belonged professionally.

My first corporate role didn't help.
I watched "leadership development" programs that developed nothing.

So, I tried to grow the old-fashioned way.
I applied for a promotion.
Rejected.

Applied again.
Rejected again.

That's when I realized something important:
If the system won't open doors for you…

So, I went back to school.
I landed at Cornell, studying HR and compensation.

But the doubt didn't disappear.
When I started my Ed.D., I still questioned whether I belonged.

So, I studied something personal.
My dissertation focused on African immigrant faculty success.
Because representation matters.

Eventually, I crossed the finish line.
Dr. Zippy Abla.

But the real milestone wasn't the title.
I realized I could build the career I once thought was impossible.

Since then:

-Director of the Education Center, transforming student and faculty development

Then I built something even more personal.
Zippy Consulting Group.
The leadership development firm I wish existed when I started.

Today I:

-Teach future leaders

But none of this happened without:
Rejection.
Doubt.
People underestimating me.
