The most honest thing a CCO said to me this week -

“I don’t know what’s happening between AI and our ecommerce store.”

That line came from a Chief Customer Officer of a fast-growing DTC brand.

That’s the most accurate state of ecommerce right now.

Here’s what I learned from that conversation 👇

• AI has already become a primary discovery channel for commerce
• Most ecommerce teams can’t even see if ChatGPT / Perplexity are sending traffic
• Shopify optimization ≠ AI optimization
• Your PDPs were built for humans - AI agents read them very differently
• Category builders (new categories, new narratives) are most exposed to AI misrepresentation

The scariest part is..

AI is already telling your brand story - whether you like it or not.

If you don’t actively teach AI:

• what makes you different
• what claims are true vs false
• which prompts you should win

AI will confidently make things up. (Politely. With citations. 😅)

Commerce leaders don’t need more “AI tools.”
They need visibility, control, and feedback loops for AI discovery.

If you run ecommerce, the question isn’t “should we think about AI?”
It’s “Do we know what AI is already saying about us?”

Google just launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).
It’s a useful signal.

Over the last few months, we’ve seen:

✅ ChatGPT add instant checkout
✅ Perplexity enable purchases inside answers
✅ AI Overviews influence decisions before people click

Search isn’t going away.

SEO still matters.

What’s changing is where influence shows up.

Quick plain-English version of what UCP actually is:
☑️ A standard way for AI systems to understand product data.
☑️ Lets AI access things like pricing, availability, shipping, and variants.
☑️ Designed so AI can recommend - and eventually help transact.
☑️ Keeps brands as the merchant of record (you don’t lose control).

In short: it’s infrastructure for AI-mediated commerce.

More and more, by the time someone lands on a site, the decision is already partly shaped - by AI summaries, comparisons, and recommendations upstream.

For commerce brands, this isn’t “SEO vs AI search.”

It’s SEO + AI search.

Same fundamentals.
More surfaces where decisions get made.

This is also the direction we’ve been building toward at Nudge - making sure brands don’t just show up in AI discovery, but can follow that through to real, shoppable outcomes.

Search isn't going to disappear.
It is widening.

Ahrefs’ latest data on Google AI Overviews has a pretty direct implication for consumer brands.

Quick facts:
- AI Overviews appear on ~21% of searches (~16% in the US).
- When present, top-ranking pages lose ~34.5% of clicks.
- ~99.9% of these queries are informational.
- Longer, question-style searches trigger them most.
- ~72% of AI Overview queries show no ads.

Translation for CMOs / SEO leaders:

Your informational content may still “rank”…
but it’s increasingly not getting the click.

This means:
- TOFU content is becoming a visibility channel, not a traffic channel.
- Measuring success purely via sessions or CTR will understate impact.
- The real risk is not losing rankings, but losing control over the path from question → product.

The tactical shift:

1. Identify high-intent informational queries that trigger AI Overviews.
2. Ensure brand + product context is present in those answers.
3. Design explicit post-answer paths (collections, PDP clusters, guides) for when users do click.

Nudge focuses on mapping AI-driven discovery to shoppable journeys, not just measuring whether a brand is cited.

AI Overviews aren’t killing SEO.
They’re compressing the funnel.

The teams that adapt will treat AI visibility and conversion as the same problem.

ChatGPT ads aren’t just a monetization update. They’re a validation of a new commerce layer.

Everyone is talking about OpenAI’s ad announcement as the next big media buy. But if you look closer, this signals a fundamental shift in how discovery works.

Historically, advertising followed 'attention'.

- Search ads followed keywords.
- Social ads followed feeds.

ChatGPT ads follow something different - Contextual Intent

Users aren’t just scrolling or searching for keywords; they are reasoning, comparing options, and pressure-testing decisions. Intent now lives inside the conversation.

Here is the nuanced take brands need to understand:

1. Paid follows organic validity.
In an AI interface, an ad sits on top of a recommendation. If the model doesn’t already understand and trust your brand organically, paid placement alone won't carry conviction. The "paid" and "organic" strategies are collapsing into one.
2. The "Handoff" is the new battleground.
The click is no longer enough. Because the user is coming from a high-intent conversation, dumping them on a generic Product Detail Page (PDP) feels like a broken experience. The post-answer experience must match the nuance of the chat they just left.
3. Discovery has moved upstream.
This confirms that AI is no longer just a utility - it is a durable distribution surface.

This isn't just about bidding on a new channel. It’s about being legible to the models that are shaping decisions.
